Hi Amy, glad to know that you're open to songs that don't necessarily have some classical influence to grab your interest. I think that might limit your choices; there are so many sub genres and wide range of rock and pop music to explore.... so far, it's been the boys club, and I'd be curious to your exposure to the female artists, like vocalist and guitarist Eva Cassidy, Joni Mitchell (who composed using her unique guitar tunings), Carole King, Carly Simon, Sandy Denny, and so many more! And do you enjoy the story telling over the melodies? Or do you need a good melody for you to like the story telling?

This is one of the softest songs by Rammstein. It is a great example of (a somewhat modern take on) what is known as a power ballad - a soft song with a hard rock sound added. Rammstein are mostly a lot harder, but also often quite humourous albeit also often with sarcastic bite. As a side note: Most of their music videos are quite amazing!
@livedandletdie2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't agree with you that this is one of the softest songs, this is the hardest song they have, in raw emotional power. And sure it's not Feuer Frei, but most of their songs aren't out there to be heavy stuff, they have a very balanced sound.

On Rammstein’s current stadium tour the opening act is a pair of classical pianists performing some of their songs as piano duets. Absolutely beautiful. They did release an album of stripped back versions of their songs of which the piano version of Sonne is especially gorgeous. It also featured in the closing credits of the video for their song Deutschland, which is astonishing in its own right, though you’re probably not ready for that yet! If you want more rock with classical from Rammstein then I’d try Mein Hertz Brennt next. And find the piano version of Sonne. Enjoy the journey :)

What you thought was a bass guitar was the rhythm guitar with some distortion and sustain. They were combining that with heavy bass guitar and drums using deliberate and firm strumming and beats. In the chorus sections they were blending in some chorus vocal samples with keyboard and violins. You're right, the song is so well produced and orchestrated. As was already mentioned, the song is very poetic and classically written. As the rhythm guitar goes into the chorus sections the lead singer lowers his voice and uses a commanding baritone modulation to match the guitar which is a really nice combination.

It's actually quite common for metal musicians to be classically trained. Metal shares a lot with classical, obviously not in the sound or structure of a piece but often in the chord or scale progression and certainly in the dynamics between high and low ends and harmonies.

As the next (and potentially more emotional) Song of Rammstein I would recommend "Zeit". It is one of their latest Songs, also on the softer side of their work, and the visuals again complement the music perfectly. "Ohne dich" gives me goosebumps, but "Zeit" brings me to tears.
@livedandletdie2 жыл бұрын
Feuer und Wasser from Rosenrot, is also a great one. But the one song that lives rent free in my head is Frühling in Paris from Liebe ist für alle da. Roter Sand as well, these ballads and their other softer songs really show how far they've come as a band, both in variety and their level of composition. No matter which album, one puts on with them, the mix in tone between the songs, makes every album an enjoyable one.

Till is amazing at conveying all sorts of emotions and his songs run a full gamut of different emotions. They're also very theatrical with their videos. Almost all of them are mini movies. Some of their newer ones have amazing production quality as well. They really take their music as an art in all its aspects, from the lyrics to the music, to the video, to the stage show on tour- they are arguably the best band to see live- and one of the things that sets them apart from most bands is that they keep improving on everything. I started listening to them in the 90s and while most bands tend to release a good album or two and then the quality goes down, Rammstein have consistently improved and evolved.

Their lyrics are indeed of upmost importance. Almost every single line has a second or even third meaning behind the surface, and simple translations can only provide the first meaning, of course, without all the subtle secondaries beyond. So if you're really interested in Rammstein it's worth to dig a little deeper, linguistically and culturally.
@jtjones732 жыл бұрын
Till Lindemann (the singer) is a true artist, and goes all out for his art. One of his recent "solo" ventures was in his band Lindemann and the depth of his videos are like short movies there as well. Rammstein appeals to so many different characters on so many levels - this fine group of highly intelligent artists possibly are Germany's deepest and most complete musical product. Every single one of the six core members is special with the fragile, broken beautiful Lindemann the most prominent of them. Rammstein is a very intense rabbithole, their live concerts are legendary - even if you are not into this kind of musical genre they play your emotions like a fine violin - with the occasional side of e-guitar to shred you to pieces. On one side i'm sad for what probably is going on inside Lindemann but i am so glad to have witnessed their art and let it take me on crazy emotional rollercoasters.

I love this. You seem to be pretty much the opposite of the cliche Rammstein fan. But you perfectly express what I was already experiencing many times with metal and rock music. It's obviously different to classical music especially in the choice of instruments, but the complexity makes it so enjoyable also for people used to classical music. Many people, I talked to in the past didn't understand, what I meant, but for me listening to both, metal and classical music, is the perfect match to me because both contribute to understand the other one. Almost 12,000 Amy (and Vlad!)….wow. I must say that when I heard you you were reviewing Rammstein, I was apprehensive. I’ve only heard one song by this band (Du Hast) and I was not impressed. And yet I keep hearing people rave about this metal band. This is only my second song by them, and I’m having a completely different experience. It’s beautiful. Thank you, Vlad, for suggesting this to Amy. It’s opened my eyes to why Rammstein is so highly regarded. To me, the beginning was a lovely “classical” interlude……with feelings of Beethoven for me.

Loving your journey…when you’re ready to double back on a band, may I strongly, strongly suggest you hear The Beatles song A Day in the Life. One of the most astounding pieces of rock music yet created. Not just an Uber-fan pushing my opinion- it’s fifty year history has stood the test of time. No education of the rock genre would be complete without it. Cheers…

I respectfully ask you would never mind The Beatles. There are, and have been, so many other bands and performers in modern history. The Beatles have had their day in the sun. Let's move on, finally, and leave the Beatles where they belong; Saturday night oldie shows, on AM radio, with Elvis, Boxcar Willie, Buddy Holly, and all the rest. Please don't waste time replying to me, with the old, "But The Beatles were such innovators, and are responsible for much of what we hear in rock and pop music today." Remember, at one time, we lauded the insulating properties and multiple uses for asbestos, but that ship has sailed. Enough of The Beatles already. Thank you.

Loved to see your first time of a song that was one of my teenage heartbreak songs and still gives me goosebumps. Loved how you analyzed the different of the compostion including the visual aspects. The only critic I have are the translations of the german lyrics which are off when it comes to quiet a few lines. I'm a native speaker so I might be a little picky or biased but I felt they are not translating the lyrics in a way they could. MIght not be super essential but still wanted to bring this up. Great video! This was also my first time hearing music by this band. "Epic" comes to mind to describe their sound (at least in this song). What I find most interesting is your commentary about them being a German band and your associations with "German" music, given your classical background. Scorpions is another German band, yet their song lyrics are all in English (I think). They have a much different sound and feel, yet they're still German. Anyway, I enjoyed your first listening video and I'm off to check out the analysis now! Thanks for posting!

I think you would find Rammstein - Seemann interesting as well, I think it's one of their most interesting pieces largely because it has passages with what I can only describe as extreme grittyness but at the same time it feels so gently. Not really sure how to describe it. It is not a typical Rammstein song, those would be Du Hast, Ich Will and Feur Frei to name a few. Also thank you for a great video, this was very interesting for a long time Rammstein fan. (There's also Donaukinder for something a bit more recent than old Seemann. For something brand new there's Zeit)

After the Nightwish reaction, I was a bit surprised by this one, as you were commenting on the orchestral parts and the expressive nuances of the vocals, both of which I had felt were a bit overlooked in Nightwish. I guess I chalk this up at least in part to the expectations you had for Rammstein vs Nightwish. You mentioned you would go back to Nightwish someday - I hope for Meadows of Heaven or maybe Elan or The Islander which have great videos to go with them too. Anyway, nice observations and interesting to see a first reaction to this kind of music video. I hadn't ever thought of Rammstein in terms of the German classical music tradition so that's an interesting thought. I know people are already complaining about too much metal, so maybe later on after you've gotten to some more rock classics, but the master of vocal expressiveness in my opinion is Roy Khan of Kamelot/Conception. I recommend My Dark Symphony by Conception to showcase that expressiveness but, speaking of carrying on classical tradition, the song Forever by Kamelot might be interesting to you as it is draws its main melody from Grieg's Solveig's Song from Peer Gynt, and the live version is a great demonstration of audience engagement and the feel of a rock concert.

Till (the singer) has always been a bit of a perfectionist over the 30 years of the band. When the Pyro doesn't go off during a show, you can tell he's upset. So it's no doubt he goes over these videos over and over again to make sure they are precise and exactly the way he wants them to be before they go out.

Nightwish is very oversold. I'll never say anything bad about the old line fans, lovely people every one I met, but since they exploded online they attracted the worst crop of johnny-come-lately posers to hit metal since the 80s... There's a lot of great metal being made today, but it tends to be more niche.

This song is one of their softest ones. They range from this to industrial. They arent known to be really complex musicly, but the thing about them are the texts, because they use so much metaphors, double meanings and wordplay its almost poetry which in turn has more impact through the simplicity. But the biggest thing are their life shows. The frontman is a certified pyro technician. So to say they are hot is an understatement. A good example for that would be their life life performances of the songs Benzin and Engel in Madison Square Garden. And their music videos are awsome too, like little movies. Even though the song is a little overhyped the video for Deutschland is a master piece and the videos for Mein Herz and Sonne are closely followed. So if they peeked your interest they are defenetly worth checking out.

The American heavy metal band MANOWAR called Richard Wagner the first heavy metal composer in music history. In the mid-1980s, a new subgenre of heavy metal (called true metal) emerged, whose exponents considered R. Wagner their patron and spiritual father. Aside from MANOWAR, there are a number of true metal bands (like HAMMERFALL, MAJESTY and SACRED STEEL) that have occultly glorified R. Wagner

Thanks for sticking with getting to know a genre you do not know about or maybe would have disliked. In this genre the lyrics are often overlooked. They are at times gems on their own. Specifically with Rammstein it could support the understanding of the songs, the changes, the pauses. Till is an excellent writer. At times you can be enjoying the song until it dawns on you what the song is actually about. He has a skill to describe the most horrifying situations in beautiful poetic ways, which in turn is a contrast by itself. Spieluhr and Dalai Lama are some examples from the top of my head. And thanks for putting in the time to review these songs. It is because of people like you that I have gotten more respect for how vocalists are masters of their own instrument and writers have the skill to invite you to a journey in their imagination.

Funnily enough, without attending music schools, rock musicians have great comprehension about classical instruments and their sound. Where as schooled classical musicians seem to have no idea about generic rock instruments. The gritty sound you heard at 5:49 is distorted electric guitars. It's the defining and most important instrument/sound in rock music. Still, you get a like for your effort.

It's a question of seekers of knowledge vs academics. Metal musicians are always looking to classic and folk traditions to make their music rooted and perfect. Classical musicians that aren't rock/ metalheads from day one lack a wikipedia level of knowledge on this stuff. You'd think a conservatory or university would be embarrassed to pump out musicologists that couldn't pick The Clash from Iron Maiden, but modern academia knows no shame.

Welcome to Rammstein, the great musical rabbit hole! 😉 That's a very smooth start, I'd say a perfect starter to get into Rammstein world. Gives you a slight taste of what you can expect in the future. I really appreciate how you noticed that Till's (singer) voice progresses every chorus through the song - that's what I love the most about this piece. If you go further, you will see that Rammstein keeps high standards - fantastic music videos, perfect timing and music cooperating with visuals etc. I'm sure you will be flooded with recommendations, but I hope you will go for "Mein Herz Brennt - piano version by Sven Helbig (Official Video)" (studio version, not the live video). It might be a good idea to search for it on "educatedmarine" KZbin channel, Rammstein videos there have English lyrics embedded. Have a nice day and enjoy! ☺
