Yeah, I really hope they pay attention to the subtleties between Suga and Kageyama. Suga isn't just a back-up, he does things that Kageyama can't. I love love love how Haikyuu shows that not being a starter doesn't mean that you're a lesser player. Everyone has their own skills they bring to the table.

@@victoriaedward1198 yeah losing against ushijima for 6 years straight (from middle school to highschool) never going to Nationals even if you have refined your mind, tecnique,phisique and the Binds with your teammates. Also being surpassed by someone 2 years younger than you that have an innate talent that overcome all you hard work and your Age gap. If this Is not sad than what can be considered sad for a sport anime character?

Kageyama has more raw talent/ potential than Oikawa does. Not to say Oikawa as bad but like the coach said, Oikawa is not a genius on the level of Kageyama. But Kageyama hasn't yet learned to rely and instinctively trust his teammates while Oikawa, without Kageyama's volleyball "genius", can bring out 100% of his teammates potential. The dynamic between Oikawa and Kageyama is one of the most interesting to watch unfold.

Oikawa is only as good as he is through sheer hard work and determination. Really commentary on life where talented people rely too heavily on their talent to carry them but sometimes that's not enough.
@ChibiMalzahar
@ChibiMalzahar 4 жыл бұрын
Well it's not really that Kageyama or even Ushijima work any less than Oikawa, they all probably train at unreasonable levels, it's just Oikawa's aptitude for specifically volleyball doesn't match his passion for the game like the quote "monsters", and imo the lesson ends up being to believe that you haven't yet reached the limits of your abilities and that with enough work you can always reach new heights. In this way he's actually also a foil for Hinata, not just Kageyama, and ends up representing the "what if they surpass me anyways" side to Haikyuu's work-hard-to-achieve-your-goals-even-if-you're-told-you-can't attitude

EPISODE 20: Oikawa was also seen as talented. I think it was mentioned in some flashback that he was bigger, stronger, and better than anybody else in middle school (or something like that) but progress/improvement depends on many other factors besides the idea of talent. And a few years later other obstacles show up (like Ushijima). Your Development doesn't keep going on a linear or exponential path, sometimes stuff's hard and your don't change for a while until you find a breakthrough that makes sense in how you understand things or it changes how you understand things fundamentally. Oikawa is a normal person, all he has accomplished has been through hard work, he loves volleyball so he works everyday to surpass himself, to surpass his limits. And while Kageyama has obviously worked hard too, he also has innate talent, that's why they call him a genius. A "genius" is a very intelligent person but breaks away from the traditional ways of thinking. Oikawa said that Kageyama's genius-like qualities come from recklessness, which can be seen as non traditional. It seems unlike most setters (e.g Sugawara, Kenma, etc...) who systematically think about each play; Kageyama seem to have instincts combined with his great situational awareness and practice to execute certain plays that a "normal non-genius" setter or player would see as insane/impossible/reckless. He also lacks hesitation in most of his decision making, which comes from his pride in his capabilities, which isnt too special but it adds edge to his ridiculous snap judgements. Also his well roundedness just makes him seem more OP or Genius-like because most people are usually really good in one thing or devotes their skill into one thing, Kageyama being able to solidly perform many skills in volleyball contrast the "normal non-genius" people a lot.

From what I picked up 'Geniuses' in HQ are players who were born with skill. I would call it talent because talent is something you are born with, skill is something you learn, and genius is something you can become if you're smart.

By genius it just means he wasn't naturally talented at the sport during the early stages, some athletes just pick up a sport and dominate from the beginning. For example MJ and Bron, MJ was a JV player till his senior year, he had to work extremely hard to be a top-tier player. LeBron was dominating in AAU circuits after he stopped playing football and switched to basketball from the age of 9 with no regulation game experience, he was just made for the game of basketball. He then became the most highly touted high school basketball player of all time, he's been elite at the game of basketball his entire life.

Oikawa is a very underappreciated character. The boi works really hard and I dont mean that everyone else doesn't of course everyone works hard too but you can see the power gap because no matter how much you polish and work hard, you can never truely close the gap btw you and someone with natural born talent and that's why Oikawa is such an incredible character who has my utmost respect because everyday he practices and works harder than anyone else to be a better setter than yesterday and it is truly inspiring

Remember that "genius" in japan is closer to prodigy, not really like intelligence-wise. Oikawa isn't a prodigy like Kageyama, and his sets aren't as insanely perfect. Oikawa just learned his teammates inside and out and practiced a fuckton, and Kageyama's inability to set "without ego" is holding him back from surpassing Oikawa
