OIL-BASED stain or WATER-BASED stain? Which SHOULD you choose?

As a DIY-er, I'm always looking for the best products to use on all of my projects. After a lot of trial and error with different stains, I wanted to share my thoughts on water based stains vs. oil based stains.

If used water base how to I dispose of the rags used ? Can I just throw them away ?

Hi eighty seven, I usually do small sections and wipe off right away. But it depends on how dark you want the stain colour to be. The longer you wait before wiping it off the darker it will be. If you have some spare wood, you can test it out to see which you like best! I test before every project. I usually do two coats, so make sure to test with 2 coats.

@@eightysevenhtx I've done with a rag or with a brush, both worked for me. It's a good idea to sand with a high grit sandpaper between coats in either case though. The first coat of varnish usually raises the grain, so a quick sand in between coats will make the finish a lot smoother.

Do you have to apply conditioner if the wood that you are staining has been previously stained?

Oh wow I just realized I never answered this! In all honesty I’m not sure. I would assume that if you are sanding off the previous finish, you would need to apply conditioner. That’s what I do.

No I just used the water based pre-stain.
