The new element from HotShot was very difficult to install into an old Frantz system, it appears the ring at the bottom of the tube should be removed as it digs into the element, the reason I had so mush difficulty attaching the band clamp. Not sure if the premium plastic element is any better than the old standard of using TP.
@ralphwood88183 жыл бұрын
When I started using the Frantz they didnt have the ring. When they started using the ring I started tossing it. high quality elements that fit don't need the ring. I haven't used the Frantz elements for 30 years. They were a perfect fit and for sure didnt need the ring. Before the remover we grabbed the dirty roll with pliers and pulled it out. I had a habit of forgetting to install it.

My 41 Dodge had a factory installed cartridge filter. It was a Fram. There was a decal with a dip stick with golden oil on it. It said the dip stick tells the story. It had a cotton element. These were far superior to the pleated paper filters at cleaning oil. Up until the 60s you could still get good elements and the Fram housing. About 1963 John Frantz came out with a adapter that allowed you th o use a roll of toilet paper. It was better than the Fram element because of instead of the oil passing thru 2 inches of cotton the oil passed thru 4 inches of tissue. The Fram was a little version of the luberfiner . There were no full flow filters then. Bypass filters were optional equipment. Several years ago I inspected the parts of a Series 60 Detroit in a Peter Bilt. Shell oil was measuring the parts. Mechanics would put it back together with the same parts and put the used oil back in. The parts looked new to me. Shell had the parts marked so that no one could mess with it. It used Shell Rotella 15 40 conventional. The bypass filter was large and took 2 rolls of Bounty Big Roll paper towels. Actually TP is better if you can use a small filter. The truck had nearly a million miles with the same parts. At one time Frantz had a aircraft filter FAA approved and Frantz brand oil.

That was 53 not 63. If the 53 chevy had a factory installed bypass filter it was clamped to the intake manifold. The Frantz adapter went in the housing. My 41 Dodge had a Fram. The Chevy had a AC bypass filter. My 38 Chevy had no filter.When it was bought new someone didnt want to pay for the optional bypass filter. John Frantz didnt invent the bypass filter. He improved it.

I started using toilet paper filters almost 60 years ago. I put a Frantz on a new Rambler American. The Rambler turned the oil black in a short time. The Frantz turned the oil clear and kept it clear. Of course on a diesel the oil can be just as clean but will be black. Some soot is too small to be an abrasive or be filtered out. Some old timers do the palm test. Kind of like you did but we rub a little in the palm. Back in the 60s toilet paper was high quality and a standard size. A little harder to find now. I'm using Great Value 1000 sheet from Wall Mart and Walmart synthetic oil. My cars will out last me. I'm 80. As a rule of thumb none of the spin on filters are any good. Some of the filters that have enough depth to clean oil are not economical. The Rambler came with a factory installed spin on bypass filter. There are several equally almost as useless that are being installed on diesel trucks. They have a slight advantage because they have an orifice. The slower the flow thru the filter the cleaner the oil.

My first Frantz cost me 29.95 in 1963. Guys told I could get a stock filter for 2 bucks..I said this one cleans oil. I was told oil is supposed to get dirty. Put one on the boss's 63 chevy Suburban with the big 6. He used Chevron Delo 20 wt. He pulled a dragster. Over 300 K without an oil drain. I started getting some respect. Lost track of it when he gave it to his dad. I used Delo 30 weight until Mobil 1 came out with 5 20 synthetic. One problem Frantz and Motor Guard had on those days there were a lot of sludged up neglected engines. One guy told me his Frantz is no good. Said his oil is dirty and his lifters are noisy. I asked him when he changed the filter last. He said change it the guy I bought it from said it would last a lifetime. These fools would go to a mechanic and be told the engine is full of toilet paper. At one time Frantz had a FAA approved AeroFrantz and their own brand of oil. Toilet paper was mostly high quality and a standard size.

About 40 years ago a real estate guy here in Denton Tx asked me about putting a Frantz on his Toyota Corolla wagon. He said he has almost 100 K on it. He was concerned that it might be too late. I asked how long he planned to keep it.He said a long time. He wanted to use the Frantz elements. Ran into him years later. My wife went to church with him. She said mr Biggs this is my husband. He said I remember Ralph. He put a Frantz on my Corrola. It has over 500 thousand on it now. Took the boy scouts on a camping trip. They found the Frantz elements.

I wanted to do this but I called my dealer service dept and he thought that it would be used as an excuse to deny any potential warranty claim if a separate drivetrain issue ever came up. I'll hold off until that warranty is up.
@ralphwood88183 жыл бұрын
I have read letters from makers of the large engines such as Cat Cummins and Detroit. If you put any non stock item on the engine and it causes damage the warranty doesnt cover it. This could be a non stock full flow filter. A oil viscosity they don't recommend . A non stock exhaust brake. A power chip. Some truckers will ask about the warranty before buying the truck. There have been cases where an oil analysis program proved extended drain intervals didnt cause engine problems. A salesman told one guy installing a bypass filter would void the warranty. The trucker said no problem il buy a different truck. The salesman said wait a minute I will call the engine maker. Good news the engine maker said it didnt void the warranty . I'm sure that's happened to others. Bypass filters have been factory installed on engines a lot longer than full flow filters. Any automotive engineer knows an engine needs both a full.flow filter and a bypass filter. You only get engine wear when there is not enough oil between the parts or dirty oil between the parts. Allowing the oil to get.dirty then draining it makes no sense.

Because the toilet paper has hundreds of turns and the oil has to go lengthwise down the entire fold before it goes back into the engine. That traps all the soot from the oil. If it had to go through each fold it would never make it through there’s just way too much resistance when the cellulose gets oil on it it swells up and gets very hard to rip.

These big oil companies that use bypass filters on their equipment have an instrument that passes a current thru the used oil. It is zeroed on new oil.the same kind as the used oil. They can tell if there is a problem with the engine such as coolant or fuel contamination. For example if the instrument pegs out they know they have a major problem. A sample goes to the lab to find the exact problem. I haven't used mine in many years. They have engineers that watch those rig engines pretty close.many years ago these big rig engines used multiple Frantz 3 stackers. When Frantz stopped making three stackers the dealer went to paper towel filters.

Told the wife to slow down. She said it wont slow down. It was running on motor oil. We got it off the road and I stuffed a jacket in the intake before it tore itself up. Stopped later and filled up with diesel and got some water in the tank. Had to get my wife to Tulsa to catch a flight. Made it to Copan Ok. Very cold. Frantz fuel filter full of ice. Oklahoma highway patrol stopped and took wife to Phillip's 66.bus to Tulsa.A guy pulled me to.a store. I got some to toilet paper and headed home. What a day. Two mistakes returned the oil from the Frantz to the valve cover on the wrong side of a baffle. Oil was picked up by the crankcase ventilation system. Another mistake the station in Sedan Ks said they were almost out of diesel. Should have gone to another station. Preferably one that sells a lot of fuel.

The origional Amsoil bypass filter was good and too expensive. Now they are not so good and are still too expensive. The dual remote was the stupidest engineering they could have dreamed up. Send me a propaganda package which meant information. It was a NASA engineer .Invited my wife an I down to Cape Canaveral for a tour. I was selling for another company. He was mostly interested in large filters. I was getting in over my head and turned it over to the filter company. They have some big diesel engines. They are not too interested in talking to me. They are interested in talking to other engineers from Shell Chevron others that use the filters. They use the filters a lot on off shore rigs Toilet paper is for things like fork trucks. The Fleet Guards I am familiar with were on heavy duty diesels. They used chopped up newspapers. We used mostly luberfiners that used waste cotton with twigs and other parts of the cotton plant. Mack trucks used centrifuges .probably the best large bypass filter is the Gulf Coast that uses big roll paper towels.At one time they used mostly Bounty. @ralphwood88183 жыл бұрын

At one time Cummins claimed that using their bypass filter would increase engine life 80%. That was the Fleet Guard 750 which used chopped newspapers and wood chips. They were talking about the big trucks. Other companies like WIX also made the elements. The big Luberfiners took the same elements. They also had a pleated paper element. If you picked one up and it was heavy it was packed with chopped news papers. Frantz system is just a smaller version. If the filter doesnt have hoses it's not a cleaning filter. Those were the good old days seeing a big chrome plated bypass Luberfiner bolted to the side of an over the road Pete. Most of them are on things like dump trucks now. Most people think the filters are only for dusty conditions. Not true.

No, there wouldn't be an issue because the normal filter will give plenty of flow for your truck to operate on. The oil being returned to the engine out of this bypass filter is never going to get sent to something that needs lubricated.

The old 7.3 engines had pipe plugs at the bottom of the engine skirt. The same as over the road truck engines. Was putting a Frantz on.a Chevy Love once. Noticed a little Frantz on the frame of his over the road truck. I told him the filter is too small.for that big engine. He said it is big enough because I change it every day. Saw another one with 2 3.stackers. He told me he gets a 6 pack of Safeway Truly Fine to service them. If Safeway still sells it it's probably junk. The 3 stackers were a nasty mess to service.
@ralphwood88183 жыл бұрын
When the filters are installed in the conventional way it doesnt matter. You are feeding clean oil to the sump. Some of my engines use Perma Cool universal sandwich adapters.in that system the oil from the Frantz would feed into the full flow filter before going into the engine parts. At one time Frantz had 2 port sandwich adapters. They depended on the pressure drop thru the adapter..zDidnt work as well on low oil flow small engines.The Perma Cool universal uses a spring to make it work. I think all Frantz has now is the single port sangwich.very valuable on some cars. The Perma Cool is for oil coolers.works the same for bypass filters. Some of my lawn mowers dont have any way to hook up a bypass filter except with a sandwich adapter. My supply of 50 year old Frantz adapters is about gone. Sent my last transmission adapter to California.

I cant say you're wrong but I believe he point of these systems is to remove any contaminants to the point that what is left is too small to matter. Offhand, I think about 5 microns is where you want to be to protect turbos, so anything smaller getting removed is bonus! ( "...oil stayed jet black. Anyone wanting a bypass system should look at Amsoil's system, it's cheaper, easier to install and the filters are spin on not a cartridge. It has diy hose fittings and filters down to 2 microns.
@ralphwood88183 жыл бұрын
There are no spin on filters that clean oil as good as the Frantz oil cleaner. This includes the Amsoil. There are some that can but are not economical.

@ralphwood88183 жыл бұрын
I haven't checked the price of the Amsoil spin on elements. They might be cheaper than Scott or Great Value 1000.
@ralphwood88183 жыл бұрын
The old Motor Guards compressed the element and forced it into tapered filter halves. At one time they claimed down to 1/100th of 1 micron. This eliminated any chance of channelling .I think they still claim submicronic. Also does the filter have enough depth to keep it up until the next filter change. I have used 1 micron filter bags at work that lasted about 5 minutes at 1 micron. About the same as pleated paper. You need depth. To be fair the only time I had a Frantz channel is filtering fuel in a yard tractor. Rain water in an old saddle tank opened the toilet paper like a book left out in the rain. The cracks went all the way thru. With this use you need a water separator before the filter.
@ralphwood88183 жыл бұрын
Watch out for down to micron ratings.If you look at what is in a used element and find something as small as 1 micron you can claim down to 1 micron.The important thing is depth and capacity. Frantz literature used to say it's 1/32" filtration compared to 4" of filtration. So true.

By my math, the bypass pays for itself in 2 oil changes if you normally change your oil at 5k miles (which is what I do). $600 to get started with bypass, oil, TBN additive and analysis (40k miles) vs 8 oil changes for $400 ($50 per oil change every 5k miles). At 40k it cost around $150 to change your oil, add another $100 for TBN and analysis for the next 40k miles. You save $50 after the second oil change, and continue to save about $200 every oil change after that. I like the theory.
@georgebrewton38794 жыл бұрын
Current OCI's are 15k.
@stayunique914 жыл бұрын
peter conway actually a lot of fleets do oil analysis, including the current fleet I work on. Just because you have “steady oil pressure” does not constitute healthy, clean, non-acidic oil. Also, that baby ISB Cummins only has 1 oil filter, OTR trucks have 3 or 4 oil filters and still have 15k mile intervals
@ralphwood88183 жыл бұрын
There are over the road trucks that have over a million miles with no oil drains. They use large paper towel filters. The filters must hold 2 gallons of oil.thats a lot of new oil added. Most have an oil analysis program. Some use synthetic and some dont. I remember when using multi grade oil in a diesel would void the warranty. Using 10 40 in many gasoline engines would void the wsrranty.

Does that eliminate the factory location of filter locations

change oil sooner, 3/4 thousand, ask cumins, they recommend that , don't go to dodge they don't know.

The whole system is based on using filters that dont clean oil then draining the dirty oil. Clean oil doesnt generate profits dirty oil does. Its sad.

I dont drain oil. I use a depth filter on both the ATFand motor oil The only truck I have is a 76 F 250 with the 390. Told my daughter I was selling it. She said no you are not. The bypass filters are as old as the truck.I dont drain oil.

I just change my oil filter every 5K miles on my Cummins and add 1.5 qts of additive. Problem solved.

Kids don't belong in the shop playing! Especially when you're doing a video!

I did this video a few years ago on a Saturday and my kids are always welcome in my shop on an off day. I let them spend time with me at the shop as possible, way better then them buried in video games!

That is a terrible place to mount that filter.
@FirepunkDiesel4 жыл бұрын
Well John, where would your mount it? 13k miles in its current location without a problem.

You do what you gotta do. The old Volkswagen beetle engines didnt last long because they came with no filter. Frantz recommended putting the Frantz upside down. The engines were loaded with large wear metals. If you put the filter upright the big engine damaging metal would gravity back into the oil pump. The Motor Guards filtered from the bottom up. You had to tilt it so that the big metal would settle in a low place like a gold miners pan. Just a little filter trivia.

My old 6.9 Ford was a piece of cake. Bolted a Gulf Coast junior to the plastic fan shroud as high as possible on the drivers side. Tapped into the oil fill neck. No spillage. Also found room for a transmission filter. I have walked away from a couple of cars when there was no place to put a filter. My Altima has the motor oil and transmission filters between the radiator and grill.Have to remove the grill to service them. These are Motor Guards. My sister wrecked my old Impala. My last two Frantzs ended up in a salvage in Dallas.

Way too easy to do oil changes with Rotella or Delo and new filter every 5-10k miles depending on how you use the truck.

This is not about convenience as much as maximum protection for the engine.

I went to the big Berryessa flea market in San Jose Ca. With a Frantz demo machine about 1963. I was ready for business. About the first guy explained to me oil is supposed to get dirty it means it's doing its job. Then that toilet paper will clog up the engine. Usually they were mechanics they claimed. Put a Frantz on my uncle's 59 Ford. He said it quit working. I was over there about every week changing the filter. I didnt realize he hadn't changed the oil in a long time and he had removed the thermostat. Probably a gallon of sludge in the engine. Put one on my dad's 51 Pontiac. Same thing. Went to a family reunion. I was reminded of the useless filter that filled up with sludge and quit working. Told my wife let's go. Haven't been back. Come to think of it I dont remember rmy dad ever changing his oil. If you put one of these filters on a car you hope it is either new or well maintained. If they dont change the oil they wont change the filter. Luckily modern engines are a lot cleaner.If my dad and uncle had gone to a mechanic they would have been told the engine is full of toilet paper. Motor Guard finally gave up on oil filters.

It cost 40 dollars to due my oil change every 3000 miles less than it does for a gas car w8th 5 or less quarts. Why would I spend all this extra b s time and money on these stupid oils and kits. You just dropped a 100 grand for a truck if you can't afford an extra 40 buck for an oil change every 6th fuel tank fill up. There's something wrong with your math or what your hauling buddy.
