You should put a tube on the inside down to the bottom of the can on the IN tube and a shorter one on the OUT tube, and some steel wool media to catch the oil droplets. The issue with these types is that the air goes right in and out and a lot of the oil vapor still gets into the engine.

That would actually work really good.

Linked in from a forum, watched to the end cuz you guys did a good job, freaking hilarious ... BUUUUT, you guys put the separator on the wrong line, it needs to be between the line that goes from the valve cover rear port to the intake manifold ... the front line is a vent that by design should be breathing from the air filter box to the engine. Also, I would have thrown some stainless wool in there to help...

+Pabst Boys Tbh this is the third video I have started to watch and your all idiots!!!! The pressure or oil isn't caused by slipping past the piston rings!! Its caused by the force of the pistons going back down!!!! which causes pressure in the engine!!! Which is why all engines have two breather ports!!! one main one off the CRANKCASE!!! and one secondary off the ROCKER COVER!!! The secondary one lets next to no oil in the engine!!!!! the main one is the cause of the manifold and ports getting full of oil!!!! The difference between expensive and cheap ones are the cheap ones are fakes that don't do anything other than looks!!! and do you know why its fake!!! no because you bloody made a fake one!!!!! NOT ENOUGH PORTS!!!!! You need two like you fitted and have one for the pipe from the crankcase and one from the rocker cover!!! then you need one in the top to vent BACK into the Inlet manifold!!!! This bypasses the need for the port in the airbox!!!! Older engines in good cars had these fitted as std!!! but as time moved on car manufactures designed there own system!! which fits a mini can bolted onto the block fitted with a filter that should stop all the oil!!! before its feed back to the engine but over time no fucker cleans them so the filters fail!!!! The secondary setup doesn't give next to no oil so they just got a small filter and thought lets save time and feed it into the airbox!!! which again no fucker cleans these out either and they fail after 100,000 miles!!!

Classic, good mixture of humour and info. Just one thing im confused about is that the airbox hose is normally mounted to the rocker cover to supply fresh air to the crank case, how does this do that by connecting it to the catch can. Does the crankcase draw vacuum?
@PabstBoys9 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Borg The opposite actually. the throttle body draws a slight vacuum up through the tube to vent off gasses built up in the crankcase. This is why its called a PCV. It Vents off Positive pressure built up in the Crankcase. Mostly due to blowby. Classically it would be vented off into the atmosphere, but Emission Regulations required that these gasses be cycled back through the combustion chamber and burnt off. Cleans up the air, but makes a mess outta your intake.
@PabstBoys9 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Borg He is right. this just got more complicated than it needs to be....lol Classically, there was no vacuum line connected to the crankcase. Just a vent. In the setup he's referring to, this is correct, and I would be wrong to say that it doesn't supply fresh air. On our 4.0L because of increased blowby due to worn out piston rings (over 200,000 miles) the vacuum cant keep up with the pressure built up in the crankcase and it blows out the other way, splashing oil through the tube with it. There are other setups as well, like you would see on some BMW's and other Euro cars, where the crankcase is under a constant vacuum. I'v seen cars that wouldn't idle because the owner forgot to put the dipstick back after checking it. So, At the end of the day, you ARE right. I appreciate you commenting. This will def. help us get better at explaining things. Cheers!

How much oil does your setup catch? I thought you used the back hose on the valve cover for a catch can. Maybe that's later Cherokee's.
@PabstBoys9 жыл бұрын
Tim Fox it catches quite a lot, but thats because the engine has so much blowby. Yeah, the hose we used is the one that blows most of the oil, but you could set one up on the other one. wouldnt hurt.
@aaronhuff44845 жыл бұрын
I know this is older but what's the copper line on firewall for
@Gabriel835809 жыл бұрын
If some one can answer me this i would appreciate it. I totally understand the use of the catch can so oil won't dirty you're air filter or enter the intake manifold. But WHY catch the oil? Instead of returning it to the motor from the bottom of the can the same way you return the clean air from the top!?
@PabstBoys9 жыл бұрын
+gabriel sapien Because it would be a lot more work to do that. It's really that simple. you could set it up like the return line on a turbo, but you'd have to put a new hole in the block or the oil pan. You'd also have to put in a one way check valve to keep the drain tube from sucking anything up while the engine is running. It's just a lot easier to drain the can every oil change.
@keithmiranda43378 жыл бұрын
Oil in there is likely mixed with combustion contaminants. You can also get condensation in there. Best to drain it out and fill the engine with some nice clean oil.
@bradleycampbell59338 жыл бұрын
dudes! i used to drive a air cooled VW. HUGE crankcase pressure problems. come to find out it is either ring blow by OR the normal air in the crankcase moves in and out of the crankcase as the pistons move up and down, and speed up and slow down. as the engine speeds up, the space in the bottom of the cylinders acts as though it is filled with the mass of the pistons. as that "area" is "filled" it pushes the air out, and as the engine slows or stops the air comes back in.when combined with worn rings and bore, it gets messy. as with my VW, most of it is air being pushed in and out of the crankcase. so how is your oil catch can doing? i need one my engine soaks my oil filter and am now running the hot air cone filter.
@PabstBoys8 жыл бұрын
Hahaha Gotta love that pre heated air induction. Oil Catch can is doing good. Does the job.

@PabstBoys10 жыл бұрын
the oil is heavier than air, so the oil will fall into the catch can rather than going onto the filter. After that, oil free air will travel back to the air intake. this will limit the mess. Does this make things easier to understand?
@Veritas_mens9 жыл бұрын
+Pabst Boys Hey guys, g'day from Australia! A few people I've watched talk about using steel wool (like pot scourers) in the can to help as a filter. What do you guys think about it? Great video, too!

For this to be fully effective it really needs some sort of baffle between the inlet and outlet. That will provide better separation between water and vapors. Actually, I wonder if this unit will even work... No offense.
@PabstBoys9 жыл бұрын
Robert Cowan I can assure you it does work, and does a pretty god job at that. A baffle would probably be needed if we had used smaller ports on the can. With the ports so large, the vapor travels through the system at such low velocity that liquid droplets cannot become air born and travel upward. Rather, liquid falls to the bottom of the can as a slow drip as it was doing in the airbox before the can was installed. I see your point, and no offence taken. The Catch Can does its job and does it well. One thing was suggested about putting coarse steel wool in the bottom of the can to cut down on the liquid sloshing around. Thats a great idea, and we'll be going with that. Thanks for the input bud.
@cowanr7759 жыл бұрын
Pabst Boys That's actually a really good point regarding the size of the fittings. Most of the aftermarket units come with 3/8 fittings which are obviously really small. I've only seen a couple that have 1/2 inch fittings, but the stock PCV system on my Volvo uses a 5/8 inch line, which is probably the largest that I've seen, especially on a 4 cyl. I can see how your larger fittings and corresponding lines would do exactly what you are saying. Well done!!
