5w30 is used for light-duty engines while 10w30 is used for engines which carry heavier loads. 10w30 provides sealing action in the engine due to the fact that it is thicker than 5w30 engine oil. 5w30 is more of a cold climate oil. If you live in Canada I would use 5w30. Check out temp ranges for oil. I hope that helps.

Captain Rob Thompson thanks for the reply. Ya I’m guessing a leak somewhere higher up on the cooling system. Tell tale is always very strong stream but I have seen signs of water in the cowling before. After running the engine hard, turning off, and tilting back up I’ve seen water drain out from where the cabling enters the motor. Running it in a bucket I don’t get any water showing though. Seems like maybe only if the motor has been run at higher rpms. 4800+. Not sure if it’s worth the tear down or not for this old guy.

Went to a Honda engine dealer to get 15400-PFB-014 but they said it has been superseded by 15400-ZZ3-003. My engine is a couple hundred miles away so I have not yet tried to do the oil+filter change but I'm concerned that this ZZ3-003 model is going to have the "deep threads" where I'll only get one turn on the filter. Do you know about the ZZ3-003 or can you still get the 15400-PFB-014?
@captainrobthompson8728
@captainrobthompson8728 2 жыл бұрын
Ok so this is what I found. It's been a few years since I worked with Honda. I'm Yamaha now. Honda Marine 15400-ZZ3-003 Oil Filter. Oil filter fits Honda 8/9.9 hp O/B's (323cc), 15/20 hp carbureted O/B's, and 25/30 hp EFI (MY2006 & Newer) outboard engines. A Sierra Sierra 18-7911-1 Will work on a 40/50 Honda it is an ok filter and will work with no problems. The issue with boats.net is it will not show superceded parts all that well. If you are far away from a dealer just order from boats.net and you will still receive the correct superceded part. They order direct from all the major motor manufactures. 15400-PFB-014 still looks like the dominant number online. But Honda site directly lists the one he gave you. 007 15400-ZZ3-003FILTER, OIL (DENSO)10000019999999$18.88 fingers crossed. If it does not work order the Sierra and you will be fine. I hope this helps. It looks like I may need to update the description on the video. Let me know what you find out? Thanks for the message. You can always go directly to Honda marine now they will give you part numbers and schematics as well.

The original oil type was 5w30. All the other motors took 10w30. The palate charge for 5w30 only for a few motors was astronomical back in the day. The temp range for most states 10w30 works fine. In Canada I would run a little thinner 5w30 is fine as long as it's a good marine oil. Neither is going to have detrimental effects on your motor.

Thanks so much for these videos, I find this interesting about the oil filter! Thanks for your attention to detail on this. Hey I have a question for you, I run in salt water 90% of the time with a 6 month old Honda BF 50, I was wondering what you would do for rinse out at the end of the day? It has a wash system but sometimes I wonder how well they work. currently I run it for at least ten minutes in a trash can with fresh water every time I take it out of the water. What have you found to be the best system? Thanks

Thanks Tim! I'm no pro filmographer but I try to get it across the best I can. On the flush. I've seen engines where people did nothing and they were fine others flush and had problems. So I would say do it when you can but don't worry if you missed a time or ran it all weekend and then flushed it Monday night. Running with a bucket is best. If you screw on to the flush with a garden hose don't run it just let the water flow on its own. To rid the motor of excessive salt you can run salt terminator through I'd say once or twice a year would be good. That will help with crusties at the thermostat. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

Look at the temperature range for both oils and where you are located with your temp. We have put in 10w30 for more than a decade with no bad side effects or premature wear. In the early 2000's the only marine oil was 10w30 the 5w was for power equipment and a separate shipping fee so we stuck with 10w30 which in New York was fine for the temp range. You'll be fine.
@larryhall7998
@larryhall7998 3 жыл бұрын
I just buy 5w 30 Honda Marine oil I am sure that 10W 30 would work fine. One suggestion I would give you is fill the oil filter with oil before you put it on. Always a smart thing to do, it helps to lubricate the motor when you first crank it!
@captainrobthompson8728
@captainrobthompson8728 3 жыл бұрын
On a filter that is vertical we always put some oil in. A sideways one we avoid that to keep the motor spotless of oil for customers. To pre lube the engine we pull the lanyard off and turn the engine over with out firing. That way we can prime the system. On a block swap doing that is a must on any hp. 5w-30 is fine. More so in Canada than Florida. Nothing bad will happen. This block is a good one.

Is it okay to use Honda marine 5w-30? Thought that was what the manual called for
@captainrobthompson8728
@captainrobthompson8728 4 жыл бұрын
It did at one point. We had 2 oils in stock til about 2008. Then it all went to 10w30. We used 5w-30 in the northern range. I think the bottle showed it being to thin at the upper 85 or 90 degree range. I'm going back a decade or so. As long you use a regular conventional oil your good. Synthetics only when you get high hours. Your motor is not really broken in til almost 1000 hours and that was directly from the mouth of Japanese designers. By the book 5w-30 is what they call for for bf40-50A and bf40-50D. You'll be perfectly fine with 10w30 as well.

Do you actually need marine oil? I know they claim more corrosion resistant compounds but what if you only boat in fresh water, also if you use a quality car oil?
@captainrobthompson8728
@captainrobthompson8728 4 жыл бұрын
Ok so do I recommend it. No. Can you, yes. If it's brand new, no. If it's got low hours also no. When a motor sinks in saltwater I do multiple oil changes with low grade car oil because it's cheap and we need to get the water out. Yes there are cleaning agents and de-carbonizers all that crap in marine oil. In the end you can use regular oil for this. But I would run a ring free additive in my fuel to clean carbon deposits. No synthetics, there is no need and that's another battle. To all the guys who jump on this and call b.s. look up in the early 2000's maybe 03 or 04 Honda recommended using automotive Pennzoil in the 200/225 or yamalube because they had "issues". Good luck willalot I think you will be fine.

Leaking oil or water? There is a rubber grommet there if it's water you have to tear down a bunch. It's probably not worth it. But that being said if water is flying around there. Your water pickup tube and rubber grommet on top of water pump housing may have been compromised. Your gonna have to pull the gear case. If it's oil trim the motor up all the way and swap out the crush washer.

I was told by mechanics from Japan the engine is broken in at 1000 hours. I've seen 4 up to 5 thousand hours on commercial engines mine has maybe 400 hours. I run the trolling motor a lot. If it's good keep running it and have fun. Don't worry about hour worry more about compression.

did something happen in this world that these filters are almost impossible to find at a reasonable price?

Everything got shut down and dealers placed spring orders that sucked up the supply. This filter is getting old so there maybe a superseded number now. One woman in Canada was having trouble and crossed it over. That filter worked. Try going to Honda marine .com and see. Good luck! There is a Yamaha, mercury and Sierra version different numbers but should work.

I have a 2007 Honda 40 BFA and it has the blue oil filter installed. I've been having trouble finding a new blue Honda oil filter 15400-PFB-014. A few sellers on Amazon have it advertised, with a picture of the blue filter and part no. 15400-PFB-014, and I ordered one, but the seller delivered a black filter part no. 15400-ZZ3-003, and said this black filter is a direct replacement for the blue filter. Other sellers on ebay said the same thing. I ended up calling a local Honda motorcycle shop and they've ordered the 15400-PFB-014 and say their materials show no cross-reference substitute filter, and I should receive the 15400-PFB-014. I'll see what I get in four days.

Have you tried boats.net? If not what city are you in? I can find you a shop or log in to Honda marine. You will find one there. If your in the boonies the Sierra or Napa version are your last choice to try. Just make sure it threads on more than 1 revolution that's the biggest thing and that the gasket is sealing against it mating surface correctly. Let me know and we will figure this out for you. Don't hold me to it but I think a 5gh-13440-70 Yamaha can work as well.

Sure put it in. Most dealerships all put in 10w30. Than ordering 5w30 for just one motor. If your in Canada go 5w30 where it's colder.
