Hi, just wanted to ask you. I did mine on a 20 hp the other day and when I put it all back together, I noticed in order to put it in reverse. I gotta wiggle the propeller a little bit and it didn’t do that before. Is it possible I have that nut out of adjustment?
@captainrobthompson8728
@captainrobthompson8728 47 минут бұрын
@smeg8557 you should always shift it while it's running. The teeth on the clutch dog don't engage unless they line up so you have to turn the prop. Thats dry shifting and bad. This doesn't always happen. Just make sure while running it shifts to forward and reverse fine and stays in gear. Make sure you can always fine your way back to neutral as well.

Hey Rob, had an issue a few weeks ago, my ‘04, 50hp Honda overheated on its initial outing from its launch to our dock. Literally 10 minutes away. That morning I ran it up on my driveway with the muffs. Hadn’t notice her peeing as I thought the tstat was still closed. My bad!! Anyways, launched her and like I said wasn’t peeing and overheated. So pulled her outa the water. Bought a new impeller, ran her up with the muffs, hardly any noticeable peeing. Figured it would get better in the lake. Keep in mind this is a 24’ pontoon. In the lake and a till nothing and the temp buzzer starts up. Shut her off and park her. Spoke to our Honda dealership. Apparently there is a third pu for water!! The two in front of the prop, either side of the bottom end. AND one above the prop. If this “third” one is, at the very least, NOT taped over, which they don’t recommend doing btw, the water pump WILL NOT pump AND will fry itself!! They suggest NOT to tape it but instead to submerge it in a Rubbermaid bin or large bucket. One that will cover the whole bottom end. That tube that you see at the end of your video is the “third” inlet tube that supplies water to the pump. That’s the one I didn’t know about that has cause me a shit load of grief!! Anyways, for all out there that are having the same issue I’ve had…hope this helps.

Cable is about 175 I think off hand a tube could be 100 plus all the little parts another 100-200 and labor probably 4 hours. Since you will have to hoist up the motor from the bracket. My labor rate is $125 per hour. Your probably in it for a grand. If it's frozen bad and nothing works out a day's labor 7 hours. I'm not sure where you are or what your horse power is? I'm just guessing. If you get everything new and a cable and cut it all out and put it all in new you just saved your labor. It should be much smooth that way. Cut the cable off at the tube and bang the tube out of the bracket but support the motor so it does not fall.

Great video Capt. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have a 2004 150hp Honda, I drained the gear oil and the oil came out very milky, I haven't had the engine serviced in almost 2 years. When I removed the drain and leveling screws they both seemed not very tight, it didn't take much effort to remove them. Should I change the o-rings and do a couple of drain and fills to remove all the contaminated oil from inside the gear case? when you said to replace the o-rings and run the motor, did you mean run it with the ears on, on the trailer or take it out and really run it in the ocean/lake?

Mine too. My carbs are obsolete and I can only rebuild. If the carbs were cleaned to good that can also be a problem. Look for a complete carb bank online. That maybe your saving grace looking long term. Try a small oring under the keeper that holds the bystarter valve. Adjusting the height of the bystarter has helped with some models. It's the needle and the amount of air/vacuum getting by that can mess it up. The ratio has to spot on or it's like your choking it still.

Not even close rookie!!! The tube is rusted and pitted from being in a saltwater environment. It will tear up the scotchbrite in seconds. It's not a gun. Years later, it's still working just fine. Because all the dried up grease, rust, scale and salt that constrict the cable are gone. Good luck with a bore snake and pipe cleaners. I've been doing it for over 20 years, had an article with Honda Marine about improvised shop tools and I still haven't fucked up anyone's tube yet.

We just got a 2010 Honda 90 on a pontoon boat so have been going through it. I followed your instructions and it was perfect... only had one issue. My new impeller had straight fins and there was no way that I could get them inside the housing. Since my old impeller was still in good shape I ended up putting it back in. So question is: is there a trick to getting the new impellers installed? You really didn't elaborate on how to install it so I assumed it was pretty simple.. but it wasn't for me. Any helpful hints? Thanks... loved your detailed explanation and instructions.
@captainrobthompson8728
@captainrobthompson8728 Жыл бұрын
Ok no problem. The fins are straight because the have no memory like the old one. When you put the housing over the impeller you turn the drive shaft and press down. Turn clockwise. This will drag the fins and bend them together and almost slide into the cup in the housing. Make sure there is a lot of grease or lub on the impeller. Just push the housing down and turn the drive shaft clockwise. It will jump in there. Let me know if you have any issues getting it in. Make sure it's the correct impeller to. There are a few for the 90s. Good luck!

Great video. I have been down that road recently. If I had properly lubricated i would never had to do it. So what i want to share : #1 : See the grease nipple on this tube ? I figured it would lubricate the tube inside. Guess what : It does not, it just lubricates the outside so it will grease tilting the motor. Nothing else. #2 : When you lubricate the shaft which you should sometimes, unscrew the tube on both sides, slide the cap and grease return washer away as well as the end of the cable and lubricate it there. If you lubricate from the outside grease will be scraped of by the grease return washer and cap and it hardly helps.
