Changing the oil every 10 000 km max or once a year is the key to keep the engine in a good shape and helps you avoid oil consumption. Thirst thing that wears off in om 60x diesels are the piston rings. Another thing is treating them delicately when cold. Basics really.

I've heard that excessive oil consumption can also be caused by not changing it at regular intervals. If not done, after a while you get "Tired Oil"--like Geritol's "Tired Blood" advertising catchword in the 50s.

good to hear most MBZ consumption issues are valve seal/guide related and not piston rings, easy fix in most cases with a full head job versus a lower end tear down. Modern M112 or M113's dont use ANY oil between services upwards of 6-7K miles!!

My 300SD seems to like Chevron Delo 400 15w40. Only oil consumption I know of is the leak from the rea main seal. LOL..... Not pulling my motor anytime soon to fix that so I reckon I will put up with a few oil drops on the shop floor and a rust free undercarriage. 😁😁

My 601's front crossmember doesn't complain too much either, about a very small leak from the front seal/upper breather. 😜😜 Engine mounts are dry 🥂🥂🎉🎉

After changing the head gasket 5 years ago and slapping on a another head (don't ask), oil consumption on my om601 seems to have been rising a very small amount. Yep suspect valve seals. However I change the oil every 12-13 k km/ 8k miles. And - The reserve bottle of 1 liter engine oil is close to, but never fully used, during this mileage. Oil level does seem to stabilize, when pulling the dipstick, just in the middle, between min./max. marks and stay there for a good bit of time.

Thanks for the awesome video as always. QUESTION: I have a very low mileage 280SE (w116 chassis from 1977) which is low mileage because it sat for long periods before I bought it. Oil consumption is on the low end of what seems to be considered "fairly normal," and the car runs and drives well. Would you recommend treating the oil with Liqui Moly Ceratec (which I think is the current replacement for Cerakote) as a preventative measure? Or should I leave well enough alone and just maintain the car normally and cross any future bridges when I come to them?
