Ive heard the rubber, maybe even silicone valve dries out sitting on store shelf for long time making the valve useless possibly causing oil starvation engine knock on 1st start up of the day... any thoughts on this?
@sixtyfiveford4 жыл бұрын
Rubber may harden but silicone never will. However I've taken apart new filters from the 1970's that the rubber was still pliable. Even with the antidrainbacks the pump to the filter will be dry and there will always be a second-few seconds of dry start until it pulls then pushes oil into the filter to push through the rest of the system. However if you had an engine with a horizontal mounted filter and it ran dry I think it would add another second or two to refill it.
@saltpepper18944 жыл бұрын
@@sixtyfiveford I should have put "silicone" in quotes bc we dont know exactly what that industry considers silicone (ever had subway sub "meat"? lol). being 58 yo i can attest they made rubber & most everything else better back then lol. This was very interesting for someone who is (somewhat) mechanically inclined and interested but has hardly any knowledge in this area. I would love to know your take on how much difference the bypass value makes- 14 psi versus 23 psi. I've found a lot of discussion but no real answers. Subject comes up a lot when discussing after market subaru oil filters. Subaru's OEM filters use an unusually high value, i.e. 23.
@sixtyfiveford10 жыл бұрын
Josh D Oil and oil filters is a very biased subject with no real answers. Just a lot of hot heads vomiting non factual opinions. Mechanical engineers spend a lot of time figuring things out to make them last a long time. But they are also paid to make stuff "work on a budget". I would trust good brand oil filters on any make of car. Like you know, the purpose of the bypass is to flow oil in cold conditions. The higher psi could cause slightly higher restriction and result in less oil flowing to vital parts, but their filter media might flow easier than media on a 14psi filter so it's a wash in what's better. Without having all the data, it's impossible to make a judgement.

@sixtyfiveford9 жыл бұрын
djsmileyoflasvegas The royal purple is a good filter and has the top mounted pressure relief valve. The spring you see in photos applies pressure to the pressure relief valve. Essentially forcing the oil to go through the filter media, but if the resistance of the oil going through the media is to great it will overcome the spring pressure and flow directly through the relief valve.

What I hate about oil filters is you can not see through them to see what is inside. I think at one point many years ago Fram was the best, and then at some point they manufactured them cheaper. The problem is you can't see inside to know what you are getting. It could be defective or empty inside for all I know.

That's why you can come to U-Tube and see dozens of different brands and types of oil filters cut open and examined in varying degrees of detail, and often with conflicting "results". Among the "Testers", most of which are absolutley dedicated to a damned "Coil Spring", (it's actually inferior to the Stamped Spring) there are many who MEAN well, but are not qualified to make scientific measurements and report their findings in a manner that states FACTS, rather than use words like "nice" to describe a filter's ADBV. But hey, nobody's perfect -- some of the "Testers" have sloppy work habits, some have limited experience, and some have no idea what they're talking about. In any case, it's cheap entertainment.

@@SlikLizrd I wonder if the Fram Ultra or Mobile 1 Extended Performance filter has a stamped spring? What brand and model is your favorite?
@SlikLizrd2 жыл бұрын
@@bobby1970 Yes, the Fram Ultra AND the Mobil 1 both have a stamped metal spring, as do the most expensive oil filters (Amsoil, Royal Purple) available today. FRAM tells us WHY they use the Stamped Spring: The Coil Spring pushes on the CENTER of the filter cannister, which distorts the thin "dome" of the cannister. The Stamped Spring pushes against the EDGES of the cannister, and will not distort the cannister "dome" in any way. Some folks are so confused that they believe that those Springs are there as part of the PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE, when the job of that spring is just TO HOLD THE PARTS IN PLACE. The famous 95 MERC runs Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, 5-W-20; Bosch Premium Oil Filter # 3410; and a FILTERMAG #SS365PR Magnet Kit. Oil & Filter changes at 5,000 miles.

@johnmoore14955 жыл бұрын
You could also argue the mesh relieve valve is better. Because in the one where it enters and leaves immediately, it doesn’t stop anything big like that chunk you pulled out of the Fram, but the mesh would stop that.

The type of material used in the filtering media has nothing to do with the number of pleats in an oil filter. HOWEVER, some filter manufacturers removed a WIRE SCREEN BACKING from their filter media to make room for MORE PLEATS.

@@SlikLizrd a) Yes, I agree. b) The move away from "wire screen backing" is a mistake IMO. I've had the media blow out before. I wasn't impressed. I always cut open my filters now and I don't buy entry level super economy filters.

That's what a By-Pass Valve does -- when opened, it allows the oil to BY-PASS the filter media and go back into the engine un-filtered. The superior By-Pass Valve design is with the valve at the INLET END, as used on some models of Motorcraft, Wix, and NAPA oil filters. This design prevents particles from being washed off the surface of the filter and sent back to the engine un-filtered.

On an item that only costs at most $20 you would be foolish to cheap out and buy a crappy oil filter especially since most people only use 2 a year on average. If you use a Wix or Napa Gold the price is even lower. My only complaint about Wix is that the WixXP version is the one that uses a fully synthetic filter media but has a micron rating of only 35. The Wix regular/Napa Gold has a better micron rating (21) but is not fully synthetic it has a filter media that is (at least partially) cellulose. I disagree with the claim that cardboard end caps do not pose a hazard to the engine; most of the time they do not but some have come apart and caused engine damage (please research this on your own). The higher end Fram oil filters do away with the cardboard and provide metal end caps and a fully synthetic filter media but I still would be reluctant to use them on general principle.
