Just going from old supply of wix xp ( ran out didn't like the new style) to Mann filter then tried fram synthetic ultra and could hear engine noise like not getting good enough oil flow back to Mann then now waiting for the Purolator boss from Amazon. Going to now also switch over to Pennzoil ultra synthetic platinum living near Edmonton Alberta extreme temperatures and was using Walmart brand full synthetic supertech. I put on about 120 kms each day going to work in city.

I'll take the Boss filter and I do use them in my vehicles. I think the Mobil1 is a variant of the PureOne filter which is a pretty good filter, but at a premium due to the name. Ironically, I think the Mobil1 brand has lagged behind some competitors (Like Purolator and Pennzoil) and has started to rely more on the name and past reputation.

I've used Mobil 1 filters ever since a K&N filter I had on my 2010 Equinox leaked at the welded nut. Good thing I saw it otherwise it would have destroyed the engine. K&N was nice enough to send me a check for the amount of the filter. That was about 10 years ago. I still have the Equinox and it has 174K miles on it now. Just changed the oil yesterday actually. Oh, I also use a Filter Mag too. For those that don't know, it's a magnet that goes on the oil filter.

Your videos always stirs up so many questions to me. 1st, I agree, Purolator is better. Now questions, color of filter elements, white vs crème color? Steve brings up a point, ARE larger filters BETTER than short recommended? Or are they smaller to save money? Are larger filters BETTER? And lastly, what results will Steve have over life of his vehicle, better or worse results? Affect oil pressure? If he continues, I hope he keeps us informed. I've learned so much from your videos that I never thought of. Louvers on your past videos, who would ever know? 👍🇺🇸
@WhipCityWrencher Жыл бұрын
Hi rice The only question I can answer is about the glue, I call it cream-colored it's actually a dirty white, lol, it's a much harder glue than the black stuff. As for oil pressure If he has a "real" oil pressure gauge in his car maybe he'll let us know if he sees any difference in oil pressure. I like bigger oil filters also they usually have more filter media and if they are mounted base plate end up they hold more oil. I think they make them smaller to save money. Thanks👍
@GT-mn3bx Жыл бұрын
Larger is better. Some 2WD GM trucks use a longer filter compared to 4WD for front driveshaft clearance. There is no difference in pressure. Obviously it would take a bigger one longer to plug.

Obviously, both made by Purolator, same factory Fayetteville NC. The difference in potting(glue) material is because of media types used. Boss is backed synthetic, M1 blended cellulose. As long as the compression spring doing its job hold element firmly in place, highly doubtful there would be any issue with the M1 in practical usage. That said, I wouldn't pay $17 for the M1, pricey. Boss retail high too but 'between the two' the better value here. Lastly, other than placebo effect doubtful owner Steve getting any measurable difference with the larger size filter. And, no filter warranty when larger filter used. Also, if still under Ford factory engine warranty and some failure occur, warranty could be voided by Ford for non-spec filter. Thanks for vid.

@@kristianhermann5971That may be true for M&H Euro, not so US made Purolator. For the latter, cellulose or blended media filters, Puro has always used the black colored potting, even before M&H purchased Purolator. The Boss is a relatively new-ish filter for Purolator and they've chosen a different potting. Perhaps it's better or just better suited for synthetic media. Whatever the reason, never seen US made Purolator with cellulose/blended media with other than the black potting shown.

I ran the M1 filters until the last one I used started leaking at a seam blowing oil all over the bottom of my engine. Good thing I caught it as I'd lost .5 quart and started to look for the cause and the filter was at fault. I'll never use one again and currently use the Boss.
@softwaresignals Жыл бұрын
Good trick there: Always check to see if the inner tube louvers are open, as sometimes the factory doesn't get them open. Fram Ultra or Endurance or Titanium filters better than either one of these in this test comparison. But the Boss isn't too bad, good quality inside. Mobil 1 often seems to have a problem with glue sloppiness. Similarly, on a past video, Whip City Wrencher opened a sloppy glued Motorcraft filter and he was able to show that the black stuff could flake off the metal surface and possibly get sucked down the bypass spring valve, not good. Therefore, choose filters like Fram Ultra/Endurance/Titanium or a Purolator Boss or Microgard Select to get the better quality (not much sloppy glue).

Both excellent filters, but, it looks like the Purolator filter will work better on finer particulate matter. The media is the only difference between the two. The anti-backflow valves aren't worth a darn on either filter, but that doesn't affect me. My filter fits vertically, with the threads on top, so the backflow valve doesn't make a difference. (I like the fact that I can pre-fill) I don't go more than 5,000 miles between changes, regardless of the oil or filter.

@lorrinbarth1969 Жыл бұрын
If car makers put 10 quart oil pans on every car engine the engines would last longer. More cooling and less oil breakdown. They don't because the owners would be screaming about the expense. A larger filter allows you to add a little more oil. Second, you never want the oil filter to go into bypass. Bypass allows the contaminates collected by the filter to be swept into the engine. A smaller filter will get plugged sooner. This isn't a problem with new engines but neglected engines can be loaded with sludge. I once owned a car with a dirty engine that would put the filter into bypass in 1500 miles. I could tell because the lifters would start ticking.

These two filters are made by Mann-Hummel. Anyone using the Mobil1 M1-102/102A can use either of these filters, if you have the clearance underneath the vehicle. Champion labs makes the 3614 or the larger 3600 filter. You can get the Amsoil EAO34, Fram Endurance FE3600, the Royal purple Entended-life, but. This Purolator Boss is far superior to the M1-209A. Since Mobil1 reformulated their oil and filter design and media, they are middle of the road at best. Tha A model filters are the black glue and semi synthetic media and the Extend life oil is not showing base oils that are not full synthetic and the additive and wear packages have been reduced. There are three top oils and the Valvoline Extended Life High mileage, Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, and Amsoil Signature series. if you use less expensive oil, use the BG products MOA engine oil supplement with each change or if you do extended oil changes, then add this through your cycle, when you change the oil filter.
