In the Netherlands we had quakes of 3.0. The government decided to shut down the entire gas industrie. Because we could get cheap gas from Russia, Norway and Qatar. Right...

I have some issues with Polomny's rationale. My main issue has to do with economic stagnation in Europe and loss of manufacturing in the US. Both have to do with the same thing, in my view: a notion of welfare state and the made up rules these societies developed to make everyone in their population believe they are rich. And so, if you are rich, you expect high wages, less working hours, plenty of holidays, wages that never fall and only go up, 13th salaries, vacations, etc etc etc...The problem is society becoming less productive and much less willing to work as a Chinese worker does and a society addicted to free stuff. This all results in higher taxes for everyone and fewer kids which further compounds the problem. It looks to me that it will get much worse before it gets any better. But it is totally reversible. The difficulty in reversing decades on the wrong path is that this will be painful and thus, politically challenging.

Sounds like you a falling for Milton Friedman and Allen Greenspan. In my hometown the Federal Government stepped in and build sidewalks in the depression because, the private economy was not creating employment. Later the thrifty local Republicans removed all the markings on sidewalk corners to hide that history or you would see it today 90 years later. Amphitheater in the State Park, trails in National Parks, sewers and sidewalks were directed public investments. I think that’s a better investment than robot cars blocking traffic and dragging pedestrians in hopes of putting taxi drivers out of business.
