Copying is one of the best ways to learn. When I visit the big art museum in my city, there are often students there, in front of some painting, sketching, even with a full easel set up. Whenever I’ve taken up a new medium, I’ve copied paintings by other artists to teach myself.

Utilizing digital painting is a great way to study the science of creating an image also. Using an Ipad and Procreate would be ideal to conduct these museum studies. The knowledge gained could then be transferred back into analog art production.

@@nicklegend4547it is really not. I got the 14 inch iPad a few months ago. Soon as you start to get photorealistic with drawings it gets hot as hell and starts crashing. Not to mention some of the nifty features of the new Apple Pencil don’t even work in procreate let alone other apps. Now it’s just a really expensive KZbin machine and a reference looker-atter.

I love the idea of doing these old pieces again; so many people forget about the roots of art, and overlook the great Masters. This definitely is a worthy tribute. Your values are so smooth, and the texture is so rich. Has the feel of the great old work. I really like the contrast between the saturated black and the flesh tones. Really well done, I respect what your doing here; keep it up :) -Best of luck on your art and your channel, and much support from one artist to another. Liked and subbed.

I made dark brown base with turpentine, wait 3 hour, sketch shapes on it and then started to creating lights but i can make smooth shades

What color you use for skin tone in each layer? How do you preserve highlight and shadow during color painting layer? Thanks.
@oldmasterpaintings
@oldmasterpaintings 4 жыл бұрын
It's a mix of lead white, yellow ochre and (venetian) red earth. Cause of the lead white the skin colour is transparent, you can seethe underpainting through. If you don't have lead white you can also take zinc white.

Which medium you use and do you add more in every next layer. Which brand lead white? And is zinc a good alternative or better flake white? Thank you.
@oldmasterpaintings
@oldmasterpaintings 4 жыл бұрын
Only a fast drying oil as medium. Selfmade black oil or sometimes linseed oil varnish. They dry within 24 hours. I don´t use any solvents in my paintings. Lead white I take from Kremer, Germany. Have also tried from Naturalpigments, it´s just as well. Zinc is better than Titanwhite if you want to have a tone like the old masters. But flake or lead white are much warmer in tone and the whites of the old masters.
