You did have a great talent. I am an avid bird watcher and that is an awesome painting of a nuthatch. You are to be commended on that beautiful painting.

It ought to be! I don't think it does anyone any good to have poor quality. The next video should be even better.

I like that your finished painting has a sense of movement and personality. Ironic, I was just taking photos of nuthatches at my feeder so I could try to paint one, and your video popped up!

Hi David. Thanks so much for this video. I watched it again now after a year of starting painting and it means even more now. So is this the alla prima method as supposed to the layering method with the robin above? Did you do another layer over this nuthatch?
@davidbrancato53393 жыл бұрын
This wasn't alla prima, no. It took me a week or so to finish it. I completed it in about four sessions I believe. Maybe three long ones. It is, however, all in one layer. The robin is done in multiple layers over the course of several weeks. I don't use any mediums to speed drying - I like to let it all dry naturally and that means allowing a week or two to pass between layers. Speaking of time passing I really need to finish that robin haha.

I'm glad to hear that you have at least attempted to do this. Don't worry if your work doesn't look the way you expected it to. It takes time to feel out how things work and how you can manipulate the paint to do what you want it to. I didn't structure this video as a tutorial per se, so following along with it is going to be challenging regardless. Don't be hard on yourself while you're learning. Save that judgement for when you do know what you're doing and you make a mess anyway. Now, I do have another bird painting up here on KZbin that is actually constructed as a walk-through. It's contained within a playlist. I have most of it finished but the last couple of videos are still in the works. It's very slow-going because I'm not charging for it. You can definitely get started with it though. It's much easier to follow because I'm giving a free step-by-step walkthrough from the very beginning.

@@davidbrancato5339 thank you for words of encouragement,in the last two months I could understand the gentle behaviour and working of oil colours,my bird painting is finally cute, and not so bad, hanging on my wall of paintings.i have started coping on canvas, the art work of great artists eg ,picasso, van Gogh,Dali. Throw of colours,inguinity and honesty leaves indelible impression upon my mind.

Wonderful. What medium?
@davidbrancato53394 жыл бұрын
I work with oils, and I use a custom painting medium that I make based on refined linseed oil and bodied (stand) oil.
@jerryjohnson40134 жыл бұрын
What do you thin them with?
@davidbrancato53394 жыл бұрын
@@jerryjohnson4013 I generally don't ever thin my paint. The only times I do are when I want to stain my canvas or something like that. Otherwise, solvents are only for brush-cleaning.
@scottjohnson62475 жыл бұрын
Would love to hear your medium recipe. I'm currently trying to figure out a slow dry medium.
@davidbrancato53395 жыл бұрын
Scott Johnson what have you been using? Mine is primarily stand and walnut oils, with small amounts of refined linseed, safflower, and poppy oil, all artist grade.
@scottjohnson62475 жыл бұрын
David Brancato thanks for the reply. So far I have not been using anything yet, but I definitely need to start with something!

Has anyone attempted this in acrylic?
@davidbrancato53394 жыл бұрын
You could paint this in acrylics, but you'd have to paint it with a totally different technique/method. Acrylics simply won't allow you to paint the way I do.
