Great video! Thanks for taking the time to explain so in-depth. You might want to add the safety info about both products as well. That Linseed Oil has been known to combust so you really need to be careful. The paint thinner needs to be covered if you are going to use it while painting so as not to breathe it. Ventilation is a must!

Hi, can i ask you a question? I bought the Louis Velasquez’s book named: Rembrandt’s Superior oil and how to make it”; which explain how to refine and thicken linseed oil. The book shows a method of thickening while you put oil before into the freezer and after into the refrigerator; do you think it is a good method? Thanks.

Have you ever used water soluble linseed oil to prime canvas then using acrylics?? I am 65 and used to use oils years ago, painting landscapes. It was too much mess for me cleaning brushes, so I started to use acrylics a few month ago and I miss the smooth blended edges with oils, but love the easy clean up with acrylics. I hope you get back to me, I would love to know if you tried this. Your work is amazing and thank you for sharing with us.

Linseed oil is highly flammabel and oily rags and paper towels can combust quite easily if you just toss it in the bin. I highly recomend reading how to dispose the rags and paper towels
@RockDove52124 жыл бұрын
What is best to do for safe disposal? I can't find clear answer. I think maybe pouring water on them?
@alexandrajohansson60474 жыл бұрын
emantsrif star i’m not really that sure. But it’s only dangerous while it’s drying. So you can either let it dry entierly flat and making sure that the heat can escape or you could put the rags in a firesafe bin with a bit of water in the bottom. If you put it in a bin, it’s important that it’s metal or fireproof glass (not regular glass) and it has to be an airtight lid. An old paintcan is good to use :)

Can the "fat over lean" rule potentially be broken if one uses paint straight from the tube over a layer that has been mixed with linseed oil? I have wondered about this because paint from the tube is much thicker but technically can not be fatter than paint that has been mixed with linseed oil. I would appreciate your perspective on this. Thank you in advance!

Hi! What should we be using as paint thinner? I always thought linseed oil could be used as thinner / for cleaning brushes, but now I'm finding that in order to follow fat over lean, I should only use linseed oil in the later layers... Hoping to work "imprimatura" into my process and wondering what to thin the paint with.
@allenvoss79773 жыл бұрын
I have a question. I tint my canvas by using and odorless turpentine as a medium. Then when that’s dry, I then use liquin original for my blocking in . Then when that is dry , I typically just work straight with the paint and lend seed oil for the remainder of the painting. Are there any problems with this system I should know about ? Please and thank you.

What kind of paint thinner do you use, and does it ever fall off that precarious perch? I see that some painters use turpentine and others use gamsol. Why would anyone use turpentine if it's hazardous and gamsol is safe? Does gamsol have some kind of disadvantage that makes some painters prefer turpentine? I can't seem to find a straight answer anywhere about this.

What about fat over lean? So If I use this method I can complete a painting without thinking about the rule? So this thinner and linseed oil is everything I need for oils? Should I add more linseed oil on every next layer or just like you did first blocking in with thinner (can I use liquin here)? Next layer with linseed oil and the last with only paint? Right. And that's all?
