It's hard to believe these lessons are over 30 years old. Helen was indeed an accomplished artist and teacher, with a deep passion for both painting and teaching, as she often expressed in her commentary. Even after 30 years, her lessons remain current and relevant.

Thank you for bringing me back into Helen's studio. I'm a grateful fan and I consider myself a 'TV student' of hers from back in the early '90s. I loved watching her paint, she taught a lot and learned a lot. Wonderful memories... it's good to hear her voice and sense of humor again

I love this channel and am truly grateful to you for uploading Helen's old videos. I learned how to paint from them more than twenty years ago on public access TV and never found better instruction. So, with my appreciation in mind, I do still have a little bit of feedback. Personally, I would prefer that we just get to see the episodes the way Helen left them, without the new edits. They were always lean and efficient, so it becomes a bit of a distraction. I certainly don't mean to offend. I'm beyond grateful to be able to see these again and can't thank you enough for your efforts. You're doing oil painters around the world a huge service.

Another lesson focused on portrait painting is scheduled for release at 11 AM EST today. Even if portraits aren't your focus, there are valuable techniques that apply to any subject. Helen's insights will be useful across the board. Enjoy! Here’s the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnO3kqCOqs93p8U

I think Helen would have been thrilled to hear such enthusiastic feedback. Her teaching style makes art accessible and understandable, and it's wonderful to know her demonstrations continue to resonate. Thank you for your posting.

Good ear. 01:18 Initially I thought I heard her say "to make the peach have fuzz and the plums have blue". But your right, now I hear "the plums have bloom". Gotta wonder what that means. Thanks for posting.

I love the purple she made from alizarin crimson and phthalo blue. I wonder what colours she used for the peaches? My best guess is naples yellow and cadmium red light. Did Helen mention using naples yellow in any other videos? Thank you for the video it was wonderful to watch.
@HelenVanWyk4 ай бұрын
Oh boy, I watched the peaches being painted at 09:17 and did not hear her mention any colors. I remember from other videos that she has Grumbacher Red on her palette. I don’t recall the other colors offhand, but I do know she has mentioned the colors on her palette in other lessons.

@HelenVanWykАй бұрын
Helen died in 1994, so a direct response from her isn’t possible. However, we do have her video lessons and books to help answer questions like yours. Helen mentioned canvas position a few times during her lessons. Here’s one example that comes to mind: kzbin.infoTllTFUmJ1as?t=1711 It generally comes down to controlling light for clearer visibility while you work...reducing glare from light reflecting off the shiny oil paint. Thanks for the posting question. Lots more to learn from Helen so please explore the other lessons.

Out house to the moon? I never heard that saying. What does it mean? At 13:45
@HelenVanWyk4 ай бұрын
That saying goes along with another thing Helen says... "Accept an unfinished look". It means that there are stages or a process that must be followed to progress from a basic or primitive state ("outhouse") to a highly advanced one ("moon"). It seems Helen says things like this for effect. It's a way to shock you into remembering a concept.

@HelenVanWyk4 ай бұрын
Sadly, Helen passed away in 1994, so a direct response from her to your observation isn't possible. However, we do have her commentary to reference. She begins working on the background at 5:57 and starts to darken it at 6:59. Your observations seem valid and reflect an artistic preference that others might share. Helen's technique of brightening the background around the subject, in this case, the pewter mug, is seen in some of her other paintings. In other lessons, she does exactly what you observed, where one side of the background is lighter or darker than the other. Thanks for posting; it’s appreciated.
