How does the cold wax medium fit into the “fat over lean” rule?

Hi +Nina Holthausen and thank you for your question. Drying time for coldwax medium and oil paint depends on many variables, including the thickness in which it is applied, the colour of oil paint used, the temperature and humidity in the air, and the surface you are using it on. Winsor and Newtown provides a guide on their website detailing the drying rates of oil colours. You can visit the page here: www.winsornewton.com/na/discover/tips-and-techniques/oil-colour/understanding-the-drying-times-for-oil-colour-us The differing times in which oil paints dry are tied to the fact that different pigments absorb oil differently. The old saying is to observe the “fat over lean” rule, meaning that you should put your least oily colours down first and then build up layers with the “fatter” oil colours. I hope this helps!

I have an oil painting done a few years ago. I'd like to layer it with encaustic and stick tissue on it. Do you think, if I clean the work with mineral spirits the wax medium would adhere to it.

Hi Judy, Thanks for your question. Varnishing may not be necessary depending on how much Cold Wax Medium you've used throughout the painting. Some people actually apply a thin layer of cold wax medium overtop the entire painting and use that as a varnish. So if you apply a lot of it you probably won't need to. Hi I'm venturing into wax painting...When your begin the oil painting to you wash it in in the oils? I do portraiture so would I Begin the Portrait in a light oil wash first? then layer it with the wax medium and glazes? thank you
