Fantastic work! Really loved watching this. It was funny, because I felt the music selection really went with the design of the card in flavor with what the ranger does as a card. Very nice!

Great stuff. Out of curiosity... I noticed that you made several changes to elements such as the armor, shield and background structure... are these changes self imposed or at the request of your art director?
@RyanPancoastIllustration7 жыл бұрын
self-imposed. After sketch approval, its all me.

Realy enjoyed seeing your process, in the beginning of the video, was that a wash of thinned out acrylics of a wash of thinned out oils? I always do a wash of burnt umber ( oils + oms ) let that dry and then sketch on top of that but I really like how you set your tonal values in the beginning here

Hey man, awesome work. Nice to see that some magic art is still done by brushes. I have a few questions. Is that really oil on canvas? How do you redo some pieces? Just paint over them or thinner? Also do you like any of the oldschool magic artists?
@RyanPancoastIllustration7 жыл бұрын
Really oil on canvas. It's a long process, so areas have time to dry. Then you just paint over them.

Watching you paint really changed my view of oil painting. You're really inspiring me to give oil painting another shot. I'm a digital painter, and I've attempted oil painting before, but was pretty put off by the problems presented by working wet-on-wet. You seem to have no trouble laying paint on top of paint. Is it simply a matter of the right load in the brush, the right angle, and the right amount of pressure? I realize you have a gumroad, and I'd hate for you to give away your secrets without compensation. Do you have a video where you talk about how you apply paint? Would gladly throw some money your way if you can point me in the right direction. Thanks so much for uploading these videos!

Areas of paint have time to dry because I paint relatively thinly. Then you just paint over them. You can also scrape away wet paint, and sometimes just paint over wet areas if you mix some medium in with the paint and use a soft good brush, like a Rosemary and Co Series 278. I think this Gumroad covers some of that, but largely it's just practice and trial-and-error over many hours.

I see. I gave your gumroad video for Ranger of Eos a watch and it answered all my questions about how you're working wet-on-wet, the faster drying mediums you use, etc. The video and painting are quite beautiful, and I might've teared up a bit watching it. Thanks so much. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply! I imagine you're pretty busy between family and work. Take care. (Also, if you're curious, I ended up on your channel thanks to One Fantastic Week and TheMagicManSam praising your painting in his latest video at 5:45 kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppu0ZIl9lJeLqNU )
