I enjoy and learn from your videos. I like your thoroughness and dedication to doing the job properly and your commitment to make every part you replace as secure and clean as possible. You also have an engaging character. You do not have noisy and irrelevant introductions but get straight to the point. You are clearly intelligent, fastidious and possess a a keen sense of humour. You are the Tarantino of Rav4 instructional videos. And your teaching is very much appreciated.

Very concise, to the point. That exhaust nonsense i will probably also encounter on my 97 Carina e. Corolla has the pan completely free of obstructions. Good to know there is a gasket with that exhaust flange. Wilk order a new one before doing the work:)

Add 500 mL of diesel before every engine oil replacement. Leave it idling for 10 minutes, then drain for 30 minutes. Helps to maintain sludge free engine.

I had a cloud of white smoke after coolant leaked into an engine, and the mechanic could not provide me with a figure on how much the repairs would cost me. So instead of taking this slippery road I've ordered an entire (used) engine from Japan and told them to swap it. It did cost me about 1K$ in total: engine plus labor, and took about 10 days.

I love watching you do all the things I should be doing to my Rav. 🤣 I recently found coolant and oil around the rim of my oil pan, any ideas on what that is from? Hard to tell where it is coming from.

Coolant on the outside of your oil pan, in the front of the engine, is probably your coolant bypass hose. Watch my radiator video at 2:14 kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4HClGWmq9R1qMU

Can you explain how tight the bolts should be by hand. I tried using a torque wrench and ended up stripping one bolt and breaking off another. I hate torque wrenches. I am a woman and not a very strong one. Should I hand tighten them my self or have a man hand tighten them a bit tighter? I was thinking hand tight then two rotations with a rachet?
@LabCoatPaul2 жыл бұрын
I hate torque wrenches too! It's hard to describe how to tighten a bolt by hand. You can feel when a bolt stops turning, and with the smaller ones, you can feel them stretch a bit if you keep turning them. It takes experience to be able to torque things correctly by hand.
@emilye7092 жыл бұрын
@@LabCoatPaul Thanks for the reply. Do you have any advice for using the torque wrench? I have it set property but it didn't click before busting the bolt:/ I had to replace the oil pan because the same thing happened last time I changed the oil. It just didn't click so I kept going. I bought the cheapest torque wrench I could find, does that have anything to do with it? I also waited till the next day to use the torque wrench so what I think happened, is that the gasket maker was dried on the bolt threads and made the torque wrench unable to detect the force because of the bounce of the gasket maker. Do you think that makes sense? I am just so afraid to use the torque wrench so my car has been sitting on risers for days now while I try to figure out what to do. The other thing is that some of the bolts do not hand tighten effortlessly, like the threads are not right(even while the gasket maker was wet) it is like the pan doesnt line up perfectly. I am using brand new bolts so I don't think there is much I can do about it. Any advice that will allow me to drive my car is greatly appreciated and I love your videos BTW!
@LabCoatPaul2 жыл бұрын
@@emilye709 You shouldn't be using a torque wrench on oil pan bolts. They're little M6 bolts, meaning they're only 6mm in diameter. You can hand-tighten them with a small 1/4" drive ratchet. Did you buy a small torque wrench? 5.4Nm is not very tight. If your torque wrench doesn't click, it's either broken, or you're trying to do something beyond it's range. Most 3/8" drive and 1/2" drive torque wrenches don't go that low. A tiny 1/4" drive torque wrench could do 5.4Nm, depending on which one you get. I don't use torque wrenches for smaller bolts. Lug nuts and head bolts need a torque wrench, but everything else can pretty much just be done by hand. My favorite torque wrench is the Harbor Freight Quinn 3/8" drive digital torque wrench, for $165: www.harborfreight.com/38-in-drive-digital-torque-wrench-64915.html

@@LabCoatPaul I followed the video from L35 in Colorado and she said to tighten to 48in-lb to prevent over tightening. I had a torque wrench that can do ft lbs and didn't realize that i needed inch lbs until it was too late, which is why I didn't try to finish tightening them till the next day when I was able to go get the in-lb torque wrench. One stripped and one busted off so I didn't move forward with tighten any of the others. I will hand tighten them with a ratchet. Thank you very much, I REALLY appreciate you getting back to me!
