Heck yeah, oil pastels!! They're my favourite art medium right now, I've been loving them so much for a couple of months now. I'm always happy to see more oil pastel tutorials, there's far too few of them on KZbin. I love all the little tips and tricks in this video, I'm sure I'll refer back to it a lot in the coming weeks :)

Maybe my favorite way to use oil pastels, especially if I want to work fairly large, is to use mat board. I'll take one of those 22 x 24, is it? sized ones, cut it into 2 or 4, and then cover it with a couple coats of acrylic gesso. I'm not that good at making the gesso neatsy-poo, but that's OK, because the irregular surface keeps me from getting too fussy about details, so I can work loosely. When I need to loosen up after too many watercolors, I may do one or two of these paintings. Really fun, like being a kid again! Also, this way, I can have different background colors and an automatic mat, since I'll leave 1-1/2 inch as a border with no gesso. The board is plenty stiff, so I can press down as hard as I want on the pastels. Just another idea for anyone who wants to try a different surface.

The versatility of the silicone tools shook me. In a good way. I've only been using them for Sculpey sculptures. I saw one person using them to blend graphite and now you've used it on oils - plus mentioned nails and stamping. Interesting!

I had just discovered than we can use vinyle eraser when we have to take off some extra pale or medium colours with oil pastels mistakes on your paper to certains entended in particular with watercolour such as Fabriano watercolour with more 25% cotton hot press paper or any mix-media papers, if you didn’t put an hard pressure on your pastels sticks. And you should erase your mistakes where they are still paper or any media on your paper already dry which it is not touch yet with oil pastels too much so! Hope this trick may be helpful to everybody of any how then!

Thank you, Lindsay. I am definitely going to be trying this. I did buy the Paul Rubens metallic set of oil pastels (36) and they are pretty. I have only swatched them. I just want you to know there are no pigment numbers on them though. Also, I use the Sennelier Oil Pastel fixative for my oils pastels and it does 'set' them. I have used it on oil pastel drawings used with Sennelier Oil Pastels on Cans Mi Teintes paper and it does actually help set it. I think it has a siccative in it. I would like to see you do a soft pastel on Pastelmat in the future to get your thoughts on that. I find it reduces the dust greatly and holds many layers. I loved the demo and the quick version. I will be watching the real-time version soon. :)

I never thought to use the silicon tools on oil pastels. I should just be brave and try different things together. After all, that's what sketchbooks are for.. Note. Check prices when looking at silicon tools. Mine are Master's Touch from Hobby Lobby and were half of the name brand in the stamping aisle. (Neither on sale). Also check size/shape of tips for what you think you need.

Oh, and I get to use Prismacolor pencils on this piece thanks to your heads up about the sale on the 150 set, Lindsay! That was fun to watch. I haven't used pastels in ages. Lately, I just picked up watercolors and have watercolor paper. But, I have oil pastels in some art gift kits I got in past Christmases. I have Van Gogh brand. Are they going to be any good? What paper (besides the pastel matte) will work with them if I just want to experiment. I have a sketchbook, but that is for drawing. Is that too thin? I don't think the watercolor paper is going to work . . .and if it does, I certainly don't want to use my good Arches paper.
