It all comes down to what additives have been added to the oil, there are very good oils being produced but you are going to pay alot for them. Oil still breaks down overtime and losses it's ability to lubricate, how fast depends on what additives have been added. Penzoil uses a lot of detergent in there oil package, Amzoil uses more viscosity stabilizers in there's making it a better oil that's why it is more expensive and can last for more miles. Everything comes down to how healthy the engine is and if you drive mostly hyway or city, its still recommended to follow the manufacturers oil change recommendations and that goes with all the fluids in the vehicle. It all comes down to what people want to pay and can afford.

Ray no matter what the vehicle you work on is; you always take us on a journey and I for one always learn something new. I love that you are genuine/authentic and even though I know the KZbin channel provides a revenue stream, you don’t ram this down our throats. I watch you and I suspect many others do, because the love the diagnostic process and you take us with you on the whole journey. I’m always amazed that if your clients will allow you to proceed you always seem to get to the core problem and not just fix the symptom with out fixing the source - you find and fix the source and you explain all the way. Ray all I can say is from a part time home mechanic, I very much appreciate all you do. Thank you - your new shop seems to be coming together nicely.

18:00 Almost happened to a friend of a friend. Was about to set off when he noticed someone throwing stones. He saw it in his mirrors. Got out and found a small kid sat in between the rear wheels. If that kid hadn’t picked out the stones from the wheel treads and threw them…. Could have been tragic. Now this is why you always do a walk around before setting off.

I have replaced quite a few of those oil pumps over the years. I have had a couple in which the pressure regulator valve stuck and caused the engine to have 0 oil pressure. I use the Melling 10296, High volume/high pressure since the engines are usually old and worn. Its a bandaid, but will add more life to the engine. They can be done without dropping the pan. Not the easiest since you need to get the bolt out for the pickup with minimal clearance.

I love watching your channel. Great stuff. Those older 5.3l were known for having the O-ring between the oil pick up tube in the pan and the oil pump go bad. (I have an 04 Yukon with the 5.3 and have had this issue myself.) You simply drop the oil pan, drop the oil pick up tube, replace the O-ring on the pick up tube and reinstall everything. My Yukon normally showed slightly above 40 psi at cold start on a 50 degree day, but when the O-ring went bad over a period of a couple years, it cold started at about 20 psi depending on temperature. I would sometimes get a slight engine knock at idle or light acceleration right before I fixed it. Once repaired, I was back to just over 40 psi at cold start again. I also have much more oil pressure needle movement associated with engine rpm. At it's worst, the oil pressure would not get above about 40 psi. Now with higher engine rpm, I can get 60-70 psi. All is wonderful for me know, even with the engine having 260k miles on it.

Yes. The O-ring on the pick-up tube. I concur. I have a 2002 Tahoe with a 5.3. At around 360,000 miles it began to have loud lifters at startup. Got worse as it got colder outside (I'm in Ray's area of Florida). Dropped the oil pan and replaced the pick-up O-ring. Solved the problem and it hasn't returned. No rattles even from an 18 degree start in Missouri over Thanksgiving.

Hey Ray. I had the same issue on my 2010 sierra. After changing the oil sending unit, it still showed low on the gage. After an oil change, it went back to normal for a while but then went back down. I found out about that little screen under the oil sending unit and after changing out that crusty little thing, all was well. Thank you for this channel as it has been very entertaining and educational to me.

Ray does a honorable and honest job he is respectful of other people's property, he makes sure his family is safe and creates really good and educational videos. Unfortunately he's to far away from us to bring our vehicles to him for repair. We ran into an oil pressure issue on a vehicle we're the pressure relief valve in the oil pump would get stuck in the open position and oil pressure would drop down to zero on the gage at idle.

The warning to watch for kids before backing up can be extended to pets, as well. I was around 10 years old at the time and we had a mother cat with kittens. Unless I missed something, the kids are his own kids. So, I doubt very much he’d sue himself, though if anything did happen that would be tragic. I grew up around dangerous workplaces. (My mother used to do work for a cotton gin, weighing the trailers as they came in) even as a kid I knew where not to go. I’m sure he warns his kids about where to go/not go and what not to mess with.

Attempting to insulate from dangers tends to a reduced safety. Teaching the skills to navigate a dangerous environment without injury is proper parenting. For further learningings, check out Gever Tulley's writing of '50 Dangerous Things' (you should let your children do) Unless you're too weak-willed to have ill-conceived notions challenged; Else, go find a safe space at some institution of "higher" learning.

I had a car like that once. Oil pressure was good until you kicked it down like passing another car then the oil pressure would go to zero. Pull over shut the engine off and restart and full oil pressure. It would act up more if your oil was closer to an oil change. Drove the car for years. Just thought I would mention it. When test driving I would have kick it down. Driving in town doesn’t let you know much. Great video!

I must have said "UNCLICK" to myslef 50 times today. I "attempted" to replace my water pump on my 02 4RNR. Some of those bolts on the AC compressor are a PITA to remove. LOL What I didnt know what that I was going to need a new timing belt tensioner. DOH! Your videos are great Ray! Keep it up!

Ray, never posted before so two things, you mentioned the “little things” but truth is they are never little. Doing the “little things” the customer sees after the fact , like blowing leaves out of cabin air intake and the like show care and concern not displayed by production shops. Secondly, your insight as to the simple things like opening the filter canister for inspection is simple and on high mileage units is quite revealing. Thanks for all of your insight and efforts to share. God bless and Merry Christmas. Md

👏👏👏👏👏for another great job. Your right those short filters are a pain. The next oil change on my wife’s ‘02 GMC Yukon with the 5.3 I’m going to get the longer filter plus order those filter wrenches, I use the cup shaped one that fits snugly on the filter, it’s great that your wife helps you. You were telling of a tragic accident. My wife lost a class mate who was run over by a tractor.

Thank you for an important reminder Ray. A very sad and similar thing happened to a dear friend's sister. The child lived but it crushed his pelvis.

The oil looks very thin. Have a Cherokee that would have the same symptoms just about the time to change the oil on the clock. Turned out it had a pair of bad injectors that were leaking slightly and the gas was getting into the case and over thinking the oil. When it was warm enough and the oil was just contaminated enough it had a hard time maintaining pressure. Diagnosis came via oil analysis... Great video

I always enjoy your videos. Wise to be very cautious about backing out. A family that went to our church lost a grandchild when the father ran over her backing out of the driveway.

Saw Mrs. Ray remove lug nuts; on the 2014 Yukon we just purchased last month, the supplied lug wrench (22mm) did not work with the 19mm lug nuts (we now carry 19mm socket and bar). Anyway, the lugs were so tight, way past the 140 ft lb specification - that I had to use a 2-foor breaker bar to loosen them so I could check brake pad thickness. Yes, I torqued the lug nuts correctly, and tires had been rotated just a month before by a shop.

I've been paying close attention because I have a 2017 5.3 Tahoe. Finally, you clear the leaves out of the vent area. Can't tell you how that bothers me in so many service videos and I'n not just referring to you. I've heard or read that the accumulation is very common in Florida, but, I'm in the Ontario, Canada, salt belt.

Thanks, man I was on my way to take mine to the dealership tomorrow for low oil pressure. I'll get the oil changed, and hopefully, the pressure stays up. Thanks again.
