I have taught to loosen 8 mm. case bolts arround the oil pump.

I'm getting serious deja vu watching this! I run one of these filter/pump combos on my Beetle. I too ground out the ports for better flow and I too made up a pump extraction tool to get the installation done. Take note that the supplied filter from EMPI is a very cheap unit; I replaced mine with a Z15 code filter from Repco. When installing the pump I used Permetax Aviation cement thinly applied to all surfaces. GOOD MOVE removing the high pressure relief valve and spring: Total overkill and with a bigger pump you can easily create too much pressure and blow the filter!

Thanks for the tip on the Repco filter :)

@@DCSquared YW except I meant "Ryco" Z150 not Repco Z15! (was watching way past sleepie-time)

Please correct me if I am wrong. My understanding for measuring oil pressure is 1 to know that the oil pump is working and 2 that the bearing journals on the crank shaft cam and tapped rockers are receiving enough oil to provide the oil film on which the bearings run. If the oil pressure is not sufficient it could mean that the oil pump is not supplying the correct volume or pressure or that one of the bearing journals is worn or out of specification and you have too much oil escaping through this journal or journals. My understanding of the plunger and spring in the oil pump is to bypass the filter if that is blocked or facilitating only restricted flow. I am not sure why you would increase the spring rate in the oil pump. Please let me know if I am missing something here Keep well and enjoy safe flying Louis

Hey Louis. The plunger and spring is not actually in the pump but the block itself and is not a true pressure control valve in the 1/2 VW case. It is a pressure relief set up which would normally bypass an oil cooler if fitted and is the closest thing you can get to having some kind of oil pressure control in the system. It is not ideal at this role. The part of the block that would normally house the pressure control spring and plunger is at the front of the block which is removed when the block is cut in half. Adding the new oil pump and filter stabilized the high and low peaks and troughs at startup and when running which were on the limits of what I was comfortabe with. They are now in a range that keeps me happy when cold and warm.

unless that full flow system has a pressure regulator before the filter which im not sure. remember to get filters rated at abnormally high PSI. I think I found WIX racing filters rated @ 300psi but it has been a while since I had my Baja

I feel a little uncomfortable that the oil filter is not safety wired. Thanks for the videos.

... As an extra precaution I apply a thin layer of high temperature silicone RTV sealant on both sides of my "dry" gaskets.

Permatex Ultra Black on the gasket at the block but none is recommended for the paper thin yellow one.

Is there a reason why the prop bolts are not safety wired? Looks like the oil filter addition went very easily. I enjoy your post, keep up the good work.
@DCSquared4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bruce. The prop bolts do not screw into the hub but rather go through it and have locking nuts on their ends.

nice vid... i will get this oil pump and filter too. what is the size and angel of your prop and the manufacturer of it? i am running a37hp 1/2 vw scout casler full block.

What happened to the landing gear? New big tires and no spring suspension.
@DCSquared4 жыл бұрын
You bet! The tundra tires perform all the suspension work now so I can do away with the weight of springs and internals. I talk about it in this video; kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWSXlGSBeNyhfpI

I saw a video and a guy said he knew of three vw oil pumps that spun drive gear and lost oil pressure. I think you shoul have drive gear of pump tig welded to shaft scince it an airplane.

This not being a performance engine with high and constantly changining revs like in a baja, it should be ok putting around at 3,000rpm

Is it leaking yet
