I once used teflon tape on 1988 nova oil light sender switch only to have the light not come on at all. A quick check showed the teflon insulated the body of the sensor from the engine block. I cleaned it up and put on a dab of pipe dope then it worked.
@spayderninja3 жыл бұрын
The oil pressure switch and oil pressure sending unit are two different types of devices. The oil pressure switch connects to the oil light on the dash. The oil pressure sending unit connects to the oil pressure gage and/or computer. The oil pressure switch is just an on/off device. The oil pressure sending unit gives a voltage proportional to the amount of oil pressure.

I own a lot of Saabs, and the 1999-2003 years were well known for "sludging". A lot of people would run the cars with the oil pickup filter plugged 90% full, you'd hear lifter noise WELL before pressure became an issue, and by the time the light actually triggered (I believe it comes on at 5 or 10 psi in the Saabs) the pressure was low enough that the damage was mostly done already. I heard the lifter noise on my wife's convertible, took the pan off and cleaned the "sludge" out of the drain pickup, it was about 40% blocked. By the time the warning light comes on it's usually 90% or more blocked :(

I think the confusion some people have about the oil sending unit "sending oil" has to do with the fact that back in the day of oil pressure gauges, there were some that had a long piece of tiny hose that actually did bring oil to the back of the gauge. These were not electrical gauges but actual hydraulic gauges. Might still see some on hot rods.
@gastecconversionprofesiona42504 жыл бұрын
thanks for sharing. BUT do not put teflon tape on, because as you explain this unit sends ground, and it takes the ground from the engine block. so, you are isolating the unit. Cheers¡
@Z-Ack2 жыл бұрын
What if you soldered a lead onto the sending units lead and ran that to an engine ground then used all the tape you want to prevent leaks? Wouldnt that still give you proper ground as long as the jumper lead you used wasent long or high resistance…? Just because those units tend to be the cause of most oil leaks and on some motors it will pump out every bit of oil you got in the matter of seconds if the thing comes out or breaks off
@tek53583 жыл бұрын
er, wouldn't the teflon potentially keep it from working, if it needs a good ground?

If I put an electric oil pressure sender in a fuel rail , would gas with ethanol make any of the sender go bad ? Or leak ?
@markknight69102 жыл бұрын
Curious,,, you made the point that the "housing" of the oil sending unit and/or possibly the oil pressure censor are grounded through that housing to function,,, adding Teflon tape to the threads of one or both components will interrupt the ground as the components get their ground from threading it/them into the block or mounting attachments fastened to the block. You would end up getting interrupted or inaccurate signals. Then,,, the expensive and time consuming chase is on to find another cause of gauge and sensor problems !!

Please if you have time help me out... the oil light came on in my car on Christmas. And stayed all day. It would go off when I rev the engine. When it’s idle it comes on... then it went away for like a month and then would go away and come back for a few days... now the oil light and low oil pressure light is on constantly... I smell burnt oil from the vent when the light is on... one person said it was the valve cover gasket. But I got that fixed a couple years ago... another place says it’s the oil sending unit... I’ve been researching and trying to diagnose it myself cause it sounds like both... I was trying to find the oil switch to see if it had oil on it but I couldn’t find it. I know it’s on the right side of my car though. The oil looks like it’s coming from the right side of the valve cover gasket and spark plugs maybe under neath . But I’m not no mechanic... by the symptoms I’ve described what do you think it is???

The Teflon tape does not electrically insulate the switch from ground. It only fills in the gaps to keep oil from leaking out. There are many parts of the threads still making electrical contact.

1986 vw scrocho has 2 oil light sender switches. Naturally the dealer sold me the wrong one. One closes with pressure and tells you if the oil filter is getting plugged up. The other opens like normal with pressure. Dealer sold me wrong one. Turn car on no light. Start it up and the oil light came on. Another tripe to the dealer for the correct one.
