Thx for the reminder -) It's always been confusing, but now it's pretty clear! Hopelfully this info will have a high viscosity in my memory 👻

I understand ie 10w40 means 10 W in cold but 40 would mean thicker than 10 but surely the second number would be lower thinner when running temp not high number slower moving oil.

The two numbers are totally different scales effectively - the W is measured at low temps and provides a low operating range (with each W number suitable for a narrow cold temp operating range) it's just a number chosen to indicate which range and could just as well be A B C D E F G. The second number is consistently measured at the same higher temp and this number is more of a sliding scale rather than a range but it is simplified into gaps of 10. So there are only 6 low-temperature grades (0W, 5W, 10W, 15W, 20W, and 25W) and 5 high-temperature grades (SAE 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60)

@@torquecars thanks for the help. It has clarified the topic for me.

The schizophrenic oils of today, multigrade. Formulated to have different personalities depending on the environment the engine is in. Actually crazy how chemists are able to do this and not only actually works, it works incredibly well
