But based on league precedent, it shouldn't have been 3 games. Even though ignoring how terrible the NHL is at fairly and consistently handing out suspensions, a 3 game suspension was probably perfectly appropriate. The funniest thing to me is that everyone is also so mad about why the play didn't get whistled dead for the holding penalty. Even IF the refs had called the penalty, it would've been played out as a delayed penalty because the oilers had possession. The other option the refs had would have been to blow the play dead after McDavid punched Garland in the face in the middle of the wrestling match, where the best call on the ice would be roughing on BOTH players, so the oilers wouldn't even get a 6-on-4 advantage for the remaining 10-15 seconds (it would be either 5-on-4 or 6-on-5).

As an oilers fan, the issue I have is treating the Myres crosscheck and the Mcdavid crosscheck evenly. For Mcdavids, there were 18 seconds of being held in place and tackled before he, in frustration with the refs who caused this to happen, crosschecked the guy, taking things into his own hands. Bad, he deserved a suspension. But to give him exactly the same as Myres is ludicrous. The dude went up to Bouchard, unprompted, and decked him in the face. Bouch did nothing and got a face full of stick. He should've at least gotten +2 on top of what Mcdavid got for that. The other issue is what is the punishment for crosschecking to the face? It's changed from 2 games to 1 playoff game to 1 game to 3 games. I wish there was consistently. Lastly, Garland literally said in post verbatim "Hes the best player in the world, so the beat strategy to win I decided was to cheat." Is that really the precedent we want to set? Hockey fans keep forgetting, there is no such thing as officiating in the NHL … it is game management. How each games are called depends on who’s the refs, what the league want to crack down this particular season, if it’s extremely obvious or not, if it’s an “automatic call”, if its close to the end of the game or not, who’s leading, sometimes the # of penalties on each side is considered, make up calls. If it’s the playoffs magically there is a new rulebook spawning for the exact same sport. Somehow, they can call both tripping and diving on the same play …. PICK ONE. If you are in front of the net apparently cross checking is perfectly legal, doubly if you are a rat of the Gallagher/Marchand variety. “Finishing your check” is also complete BS and contradicts the interference rule directly.

The NHL could have gone way harder on them just to send a message that they aren't playing around when it comes to this stuff. Both teams are lucky that no one was injured from these cross checks. I also think the health of the game is at jeopardy if the league keeps allowing for non hockey plays to take players out of the game. Holding any player for 15 seconds with no call is crazy, superstar or not. This is why soccer players take a dive when anything happens to them. We really don't need the same happening in the NHL.

Call the penalty....If it is a penalty in the first minute it should be a penalty in the final....Subjective officiating is the ruin of this league....Changing officiating standards as games or in the playoffs is ridiculous . Hockey was created in a pond and cteativity and skill should be free in display....Not big boy hockey where players just dump it in grab and hold

The "refs need to do better, but you still cant retaliate" comments have been going on since Bobby Orr's rookie season. The day that happens is the day I'll care about star players retaliating. Canucks fans who had to watch Bure's career get cut short should understand exactly why Oilers fans, just like Penguins fans of the last decade are going and went insane. At the end of the day as much as people say they care about calling the rule book, they really dont. They care about the refs calling the rule book when their team gets penalized, but when your team doesnt have game breaking talent the rulebook is just a detriment to you.

We aren’t talking about protecting the star players. The conversation is the that the league has decided that McDavid doesn’t get to draw penalties this year. He just got slew foot by Kempe with no call and all this could’ve been avoided if the refs just called a penalty on Garland for his blatant hold. Refs need to just call the rule book

Crosby nearly has his career ended on MULTIPLE occasions and never took anything more than a 5 minute major after dropping the gloves. He was the literal punching bag of the league for the better part of 10 years and got his revenge on the score sheet. Now he is undoubtedly one of the most respected players in the league. Seriously, when u can have the fans in philly sayin "man I HATE crosby more than any player ever, but I can't help but respect him

you are looking at this far too shallow. You are quoting a stat from 2016 to current, but this year, the oilers are 26th in the league in number of powerplays. McDavid personally is 197th in the league in drawn penalties. That's laughable with the way he is harassed. This is wrong, and leads to overreactions. As others have said, this is different than the other leagues which worked to protect their stars. What would you rather see? Stars clutched and grabbed, or stars scoring? Last year they had a lot more powerplays, but they also scored at a historic rate, and the talking heads were all talking about how much of an advantage it gave them. Leagues got to figure out what it wants. Teams comments aren't just about the suspension, they're drawing attention to the deeper issue.

McDavid obviously can’t do that, but there's no consistency to the calls, remember that brutal crosscheck to the face McDavid took from Carson Soucy in the playoffs against Vancouver last year? how many games do you think that was? the answer is 1 and that was a far more violent crosscheck than the one on Garland. I agree with the suspention but the leauge needs to set things straight. Is a crosscheck to the head a 1 game suspention or 3? the reason everyones mad is cause its always a guessing game, ya never know what it’s gonna be.

The amount of family and friends that are baffled and have actual anger towards the suspension (and no, not the missed calls) is ridiculous to me. If you are cross checking somebody in the neck, no matter how much of a rat that player is, you deserve to be suspended. As soon as it happened I HOPED he would be suspended so as to make an example of the league's golden boy, glad it did.

It's the least popular sport of these leagues. Money in the governors pockets, and a watered down product.

Remember that what people post on the internet doesn't necessarily reflect what a majority of fans actually think and feel... I live in Edmonton and have talked to dozens of people about this call and the general consensus from everyone has been the same: McDavid shouldn't have done what he did and deserved a fair punishment for his choice, but also, the refs should've blown the whistle after the first time he got up and was re-tackled to the ice by Garland. A penalty is a penalty no matter when in the game it takes place, it was weak for the refs to defend their choice to ignore it by saying "well Edmonton had possession and if we'd blown the play dead and then they got a goal, everyone would be mad." What kind of way is that to think? Player safety should come first and without consistency in how rules are enforced, people get frustrated and make bad choices.... No matter what level of hockey you're playing.
@girhen11 күн бұрын
McDavid chicken winged one game and crosschecked a guy in the face a few later. Possibly a consideration. I've seen some people were pointing at Soucy only getting 1 game for cross checking McD and crying foul, but playoff hockey has different rules and punishments than regular season. Ask Draisaitl and Barkov. And, honestly, it looked like Soucy wanted McD's chest, but McD was knocked down as he also pushed Soucy's stick upward.

I only am upset that Myers did not get a more severe penalty for his crosscheck. It was entirely unprovoked, and you pointed out in the last video how Myers watched the Oilers player remove his mouth guard before the crosscheck to the face. That, in my opinion, deserves more recourse than for a retaliatory offense.

Oilers fan here. McDavid cross checked a player recklessly in the chin and absolutely deserved to be suspended. Anyone who says it’s overkill is kidding themselves and honestly I would say he actually got away with the elbow against Minnesota last week and very easily could’ve gotten disciplinary action for that. I think the frustration comes from the fact that yes McDavid has drawn more penalties than another other player but he also should have drawn more. The narrative that the refs will let anyone get away with anything on him is bs but it’s also hard when he can keep skating through a hook and get up ice and despite it not completely stopping him, it’s still something teams have gotten very good at being sneaky about. Not just with McDavid but stars like MacKinnon also do it, they’re simply good enough that what should be a penalty might not get called because they’re that good. Or I’m being a completely bias oilers fan😂

Watch the hit again, frame-by-frame like the league should have done if you can use "," and "." on a keyboard, or at least at the 0.25X KZbin allows on mobile. Garland's left fist, and possibly stick, have risen and made contact with McDavid's jaw on a cross-check of his own before McDavid's stick connects with Garland. "McDavid cross-checked a dude in the face. You can't do that." I agree, since hits to the head are such a serious matter. Soooo, when can I expect to see Garland's suspension be announced?

I think its just an absurd over correction by Oilers fans. They're pissed McDavid got 3 games when the last like 4 times this exact play happened, the DoPS gave the player 1 game. Not since Matthews got 2 games for his face cross check has so stiff a penalty been given for this infraction. So the fans go nuts and have decided it should just be nothing now. Its silly, but I get where its coming from at least. Consistency would be nice. The NHL fucking sucks massive sweaty hairy gorilla balls at it.

I don't know any Oilers fans who don't think McDavid deserved a suspension, beyond beefs with the DOPS and it's wildly inconsistent suspension length, I think most know he should be suspended. The problem with the NHL is that they NEVER admit fault for anything. Oilers fans are upset about the nonsense that led to the crosscheck, not the crosscheck. If the NHL gave Connor a suspension and even slightly acknowledged the circumstances that led to crosscheck, Oilers fans would be much happier. It's much like Kesler holding Talbot's pad open in 2017, silence from the NHL despite it's clear failing.
@PainfulJoy11 күн бұрын
Two things can be true at the same time: 1. Committing an infraction (harmful or not) late in the game to try to secure a win like Garland did (and admitted he was doing!) SHOULD be penalized, and honestly, something like extending the game clock until the end of the penalty time, or calling an instant penalty shot if the penalty occurs with less time left in the game than the penalty would last for are both ideas that have been tossed around and should be considered. Taking a penalty late to try to stall out a win when you have a narrow lead shouldn't be rewarded. 2. McDavid (and Myers) deserved the suspension.

I say this as a near-lifelong fan of both teams. Oilers have somehow become worse and worse over the years, especially the last three when it comes to extreme bias. It's gotten really frustrating to see, and it's of course leaked into the younger members of my immediate and extended family as well, mostly to the "more vulnerable" members. It's just a really bad look for the organization and the fanbase, and I know not every Oilers fan thinks the way that is now "common", but I really wish people could see both sides of things sometimes. I understand we all have emotions and have so much passion for the game of hockey, but there come moments where you need to have a cool head to understand why things happen. McDavid and Myers both 100% deserved suspensions, it's not even a debate for non-biased fans of the sport. It was just a question of how many games. It's just incredible to see the city I've been to so many times and even lived in have such a terrible outlook on certain decisions. Makes my heart hurt a bit. Cheers.

Stauffer wasn't saying he shouldn't have gotten a suspension. He was saying if the penalty had been called on Garland in the first place neither cross check would have happened at all. The corss checks and suspensions are a direct result of the refs deciding not to call the hold/mauling of McDavid. As for the actual suspension 3 games is ridiculous, but thats also par for the course for the NHL. 1 game in my mind. But that isn't the main issue to me. The main issue again is holding, hacking, tripping that is allowed to happen and this is the boiling point of that.

Eck I’m a huge Oilers fan, I’m also a huge fan of your channel. There were a number of incidents during the week which we can look at when it comes to what may have incited Mc David’s frustration. The slew foot by Kempe on Mc David, another slew foot by Hartman on Draisaitl, the cross check to the back of Bouchard by Soucy. The reffing in these games has been questionable at best. However, the notion that Mc David should get special treatment for being a star player, and that he should just say no to league events is laughable in my opinion. I’m surprised more Flames and Canucks fans haven’t pointed out the league should refuse to have Mc David in their events as maybe having a star player who has been disciplined now on multiple occasions influence kids to take their frustrations out on opposing players like that isn’t what is in the NHL’s best interest. You do the crime you do the time. End of story.

I don't want special treatment for any player, and I am a huge Oilers fan. The real initiating cause of both the McDavid and Myers retaliation was the egregious lack of a call on Vancouver's Garland for obstruction. With time running out in the game, Garland's intent and strategy was blatantly obvious to everyone in the building.... except, apparently, the officials. They should also be suspended.

The refs should have called a penalty, but what does that mean. He holds up his arm and waits for the Canucks to control the puck. Tie up McDavid in the last minute and possible give up a 30 second power play. It may not be the spirit of the game, but it’s not a horrible strategy.
@MusicIsMusic100011 күн бұрын
That arm goes up though and you toss the puck at the net to force the goalie to hold it and get the whistle to maximize what time is left with and extra man advantage. Of course you are relying on winning the faceoff still.
