The 2007 High School Recruiting class was one of the most stacked ever, headlined by names like Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley, Blake Griffin, Kevin Love and James Harden, but top ranked recruit was OJ Mayo. Mayo was a high school phenom who drew comparisons to both LeBron James and Kobe Bryant throughout one of the most illustrious and well documented high school careers ever, culminating in a legendary senior season for Huntington Prep. The league had implemented the "one and done" rule while he was in high school, so he had to spend a year in college where he starred for the USC Trojans. Then would go 3rd overall in the 2008 NBA draft, his career had such a promising start, as he joined an up and coming Grizzlies team with Rudy Gay, Mike Conley, Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol and was one of their best all around players, but as his time there went on, his role was reduced and he became restless. So he would leave for a Dirk Nowitzki led Dallas Mavericks team in 2013, and after a good year there he went in search for long term deal and signed with a MIlwaukee Bucks team who were about to start the Giannis Antetokounmpo era, but Mayo would go on a steep decline until he received one of the NBA"s harshest drug-related suspensions in history, and even though he could have came back, he never did, as he spent the rest of his playing days overseas. OJ mayo's basketball story is interesting and completely unexpected based on the hype around him as a teenager, but it also has to be clear that it was nowhere near a failure.

That video from his state championship where he threw it off the backboard, dunked it and threw the ball in the crowd one of the first viral YT vids. That went platinum on MySpace 😂😂

From a rising star to being banned from the NBA is such a shame for OJ Mayo.

I never understood why people thought getting "embarassed" by MJ was a bad thing, the fact that the Goat acknowledged you publicly is enough said.

Its not a bad thing. But saying words like "embarrassed" makes the story more exciting

I believe if he goes to Minnesota and becomes the first option his career turns out different. His second year he gets more comfortable and never have to worry about starting and minutes played

Yeah and he could be away from Memphis and the gang n drug culture there. That was the wrong team to put Mayo on cuz of that city.

Exactly! He would've been #1 in that 2007 Draft, cuz Oden would've went # 1 in 2006

He was essentially Kyrie Irving before Kyrie Irving. Amazing skill set. I saw him beat a good North Carolina Tarheel team while he was at USC. He was ready to play in the NBA at that point. Incredibly unrealized potential. Needed better mentorship.

My second favorite player of all time behind LeBron. Prime example of how important it is to get drafted to the right team. He was a pure first option bucket that should’ve been getting 20+ shots a night not a spot up guy. Every single time he was given that opportunity he flourished. When Dirk was injured that year he averaged about 25 per game. I wish his career would’ve turned out different.

I always felt Oj Mayo was one of those kids that didn't really respect the game or respect the guys that came before him. Guys like Nick Young, Gilbert Arenas, Lonzo Ball were like that and nowadays there are more kids that come in the game and don't seem to care.

Don’t put Lonzo in that category are you kidding me? He put in WORK improving his game especially his jump shot and had the bulls playing like an elite team before his injuries. He also is elite on defense and still has his signature court awareness. Him having a chance to come back this season is a testament to him caring and putting in the work because he could have easily just retired.

Cute thumbnail……but Michael Jordan would never say “I’m the greatest ever.” 😂🤦‍♂️ It’s just universally known that MJ is the GOAT. Because he is.
