Forgotten Player Profiles

Күн бұрын

He’s one of the lesser talked about halfbacks of the 90s, one of the most underrated dual threat players in NFL history and there’s a great argument that he’s a Hall of Fame caliber player, yet Ricky Watters doesn’t seem to get his due. He’s known best for his 4 word quote, uttered after he didn’t extend for a pass during his time with the Philadephia Eagles: For who? For what?” Those 4 words have cast a cloud on an otherwise incredible career which saw Watters run wild over NFL defenses for a decade, retiring as a member of the 10,000 rushing yards club and racking up nearly 15000 yards from scrimmage. Prior to his infamous quote, he had began to make a name for himself as a do It all player on some loaded Notre Dame Fighting Irish teams, then after sitting out his rookie year with the 49ers; he came back and acted as a perfect replacement for the great Roger Craig, alongside Steve Young and Jerry Rice, helping the 49ers win Super Bowl 29. Then even though his Eagles career got off to a rocky start, he would rush for nearly 4000 yards during his three years on the team, pairing with a young Charlie Garner. Then he would finish off his career in Seattle, crossing the 1200 in each of his first three seasons there before suffering an injury in the 2001 season and losing his spot to a young Shaun Alexander. So even though his career ended uneventfully, his 10 years in the league were anything but uneventful, as the brash and confident Watters played the game his way, and never changed who he was, and he had every right to do that, because he backed it up every Sunday.

I have a TERRY Metcalf story (Eric's father): I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Japanese-American and male. My friend Tom coached a 16-17 year old boys team. Terry Metcalf was a referee, along with a kindergarten teacher. Ben, who was a hot-headed a-hole, played for Tom's team. I went to watch some of their games. On a fast break, Ben got thrown into the wall, no foul was called. Terry blew the whistle and said, "My time. Are you ok?" Ben said "F--k you." Terry said, "Technical! Ejected! Have a seat!" Ben said, "F--k you." Terry said, "Out of the gym!" Later in the game (Tom's team was all Caucasian, and the opponent happened to be mostly Asian), Terry told the team captain of Tom's team, "I don't want to hear any more complaints from your team!" The captain asked Terry, "Is that a racist remark?" Terry said, "Technical!" Tom got very pissed off about that.

Ricky "Running" Watters deserves a gold jacket. If the 49ers could of resign him back after Superbowl win 49ers probably would win 1 or 2 more Superbowl wins with Young, Rice, and T.O coming into the picture . Watters can do it all Running and Receiving Back. Also made it to the Playoffs with 3 Different Teams. Certainly a great Running Back to watch during the 90's.

Ricky “Running” Waters was One of the Finest Well Rounded Running Backs I’ve ever seen ..Always a Top Shelf Entertainer in a League of Entertainment… Trust Me I seen a lot of Pro Football in my lifetime .. For Ricky it wasn’t just about getting empty Yards & Stats it was the way He got those Yards … He could really put a Team’s Offense on His Back .. Where the NFL’s All Time Best Defenses was Geared and came into the Game with the motto “We’re Gonna Punch Ricky is His Loud Mouth & Shut Him Down” but actually Never could.. IMO Ricky should’ve been a “No Brainer” First Ballot Hall of Famer but due to The Country , The Politics while being UnApologetically Who You are as a Man here in America Unfortunately will only lead to Ricky being made an Example of .. Which makes The Hall of Fame Voting Committee look like Highly Suspect Organization of Biased Scumbags!!!…💯✊🏾

Holtz never used Watters correctly at Notre Dame. He was used as a change of pace back instead of the work horse RB. Everybody used to say, "Why don't they use this Watters guy more?" Holtz just loved his 240 lb backs too much. When I saw him in week one on the 49ers against the Giants, I knew that was a great fit for him as he was a great receiving back. He ran for finesse and power, one of the best of all-time.

A Ricky Watters story that I DIDN'T like: In 2001, we traded for Matt Hasselbeck, who I KNEW would pan out! During training camp, Matt was quarterbacking, and Ricky Watters yelled to Matt, "Give 'The Truth' the ball!! Give 'The Truth' the ball!!" Matt Didn't know who "The Truth" was. The POINT is, I DON'T like that kind of arrogance. How about "Time to get tough. Give me the ball." I would have like that a LOT better, than this whole "The Truth" and THIRD person BS.

I'd like to point out the fact that the NFL Hall of Fame process is extremely flawed... Take Derrick Thomas for instance, if ever there was a person deserving of first ballot status, it was him... He was on four ballots before finally making the cut, which was basically like going and pissing on his headstone for each eligible ballot he was on

Thanks for this video. He had a great career low key. I didn’t know much about him since I didn’t follow the NFL til 2001.

Ricky Watters definitely would’ve helped the Niners win more Super Bowls if he would’ve stayed and he had a really good chance to become the second 1000 yards rushing & 1000 yards receiving after Roger Craig. His ego wouldn’t allow that unfortunately 🤦🏽‍♂️

Ricky was messing with a woman that jon gruden was seeing. It was a him or me situation. So jon left and then Ricky left the following season

Watters was great and should be in the Hall. Today, every players motto is For Who For What and nobody cares.

In my opinion, it wasn't what Ricky was willing to do on the field to get in the Hall of Fame, it was what he wasn't willing to do off the field to get into the Hall of Fame. There were a lot of questionable characters inducted, so why is he not in?

He really was awesome. He is one of those legends who is just under the HOF mark. Would love to see him in the hall but can see why he just misses getting voted in.
