@@yougsa Invalidating is dismissing someone's thoughts, feelings, and behavior. So yes, he was invalidating his wife. While she was also invalidating his assumptions on his mom not snooping (which was obviously wrong since she snooped anyway), the wife had reasonable doubt since they've proved that every single time MIL visits, she goes through their stuff. That's a violation of privacy, and if the husband is okay with his mother acting like that, then fine but that's inconsiderate to the wife. Also, that would be a dumb opinion on the husbands part. "In my opinion, my MIL goes through me and my wife's things every time she visits, but she surely won't do it again the 16th time!"

The second one was only wrong for yelling back at an older guest, she already proved her point and exposed and embarrassed the MIL. I also always lock my door when naughty relatives visit us. Yelling at your guests is a big no no in our culture. I feel it's best not to invite them if you can help it. Either go to their home or arrange an outdoors location.

I see your point if your coming from a place of your own culture, but I personally feel like there's a level of respect that you should have for everyone, regardless of age. Beyond that point, respect is earned. If that MIL has constantly disrespected the wife's privacy and even has the nerve to yell at her after being confronted, then the wife wasn't wrong for yelling back. In that case, there should have been mutual respect, but the MIL broke it, so the yelling was deserved.
