Perhaps the only useful exercise I remember in "Art 101" was we were all handed a palette of red, blue, yellow, white, and black paint and required to mix until we matched our own skin tone. We then had to mix up at least one classmate's skin tone. It was soooo hard at first, but totally changed the way I view colors.

I am a pale warm olive and I have a few more 'tests' that may help you determine your green undertone: 1) You look terrible in pastels. You can usually wear many colours - some warm, some cool - but they have to be either bright or intense/darker. 2) You look equally bad/nothing special in silver and gold. You look better than either of them in rose-gold metals (especially if you are a cool olive). You look best in brass/aged copper if you are a warm olive. 3) Same for shimmer shadows: silver looks bad, yellow gold the same. You look good in champagne neutrals or aged gold/coppers/shimmery bronzes. 4) You never look good in pure white. Off-white, cream white or even ivory is the only one that you can make work. 5) You look better in grungier than in pure colours: petrol better than royal blue, burgundy or brick better than clear red or brown, mustardy yellow than clear sunny yellow, forest green better than emerald green, etc. 6) You tan pretty. Even if your skin turns red after getting too much sun, it settles into a pretty olive tanned, summery look after a few days. 7) All red lipsticks look good on you regardless their blue or yellow undertone, as long as they are darker. Lighter blue reds look pink on you, lighter orange-y reds make you look sick (cause they bring up the green in your skin). Also, you need a full coverage foundation with red lips, otherwise your skin looks unhealthy. 8) If you make the 12 seasons colour test, it will usually put you in the deep or soft autumn category if you are a warm olive (despite being e.g. a blonde with blue eyes), and deep or cool winter if you are a cool olive, although you do not fully match the whole description.

Tbh a lot of stereotypical pastels are cool colors. I have dark hair and a very similar skin color to Alex, maybe slightly lighter. For a long time I knew I was warm/olive, but I also thought I was deep autumn. I only shopped for deep autumn colors, and never tried on pastels. My mom always told me I looked terrible in dark colors and I was so confused as to why. Until my boyfriend started encouraging me to try on clothes I would have never gone for, and the light “pastel” colors looked better than the deep colors. As long as they weren’t too cool-toned, the light colors have been fine on me. So am I a spring? In the end I think, as Alex suggests, gathering observations from other people who can see you IRL in daylight is much easier than comparing yourself to a set of hard rules that might not fit you 100%.
@disgsteng67553 жыл бұрын
@@littlebumgorf absolutely. i find 12 seasons color test is such a hassle as an olive. i was tested as soft autumn, but it's too warm for me. winter is too cool and either bright (bright colors make me look sick) or too deep. soft summer is the closest match but most light colors look awful on me, especially pastels (especially warmer ones). spring is just too warm and light. so i just compiled a rough guide for myself with some minimal referencing of 12 seasons, but instead of following only one season i just take inspiration from couple that are a closest match and mix and match multiple seasons as they fit me personally.

Tip: try scraping off a TINY amount of eyeshadow in the adjusting color needed, and mix it into your foundation. For example, if you're olive and you need a small amount of green in a foundation that's not quite right for you, mix in a tiny smidge of a green eyeshadow. Experiment with shades and the amount needed. It's at least a great way to figure out what color corrector you need for a specificfoundation, but you might be able to find the perfect shadow and use that as your regular corrector.

I, a pink person, have never understood why pink skin has a blue undertone. What does that even mean
@mizshellytee3 жыл бұрын
Brown is a tertiary colour as it's all three primary colours (red, yellow, blue) mixed together. (Orange, green, and purple are secondary colours.) But of course, there are nuances of brown, depending on how much of each primary colour is mixed in. I think it's in this sense that Alex is talking about a blue undertone. And yet! There are also nuances of red and pink! Think about blush and lipstick shades in the red and pink families. Some have more blue pigment added to them when mixed, so they're more cool-toned (e.g., raspberry tones) but others have more of a yellow base and so are warmer (e.g., the inside of a watermelon). Others still have an elevated amount of red but roughly equal parts yellow and blue.

Olive skin is so hard. I just realised this year I’m a pale olive. Both gold and silver looks great on me. Neutral undertone foundation makes me look grey/sick, and yellow undertone foundation is way too warm yellow/gold. I do have some yellow in there, but it’s like a cooler yellow/green. Pat McGrath’s foundation in Light 5 is very close to a perfect match. It’s the perfect shade match, but not undertone. Tom Ford’s Traceless Soft Matte foundation in 1.4 Bone is the perfect undertone but slightly too dark. I usually tend to mix. I’m still hunting for the perfect bronzer. Next to try is Beauty Bay Bronzer in Fawn & Tom Ford Soleil Terra Bronzer.

Recently got a sunburn for the first time in over a decade, and found out that I turn olive. So I'm apparently a very fair neutral to cool yellow olive undertone. I hear ya. I’ve been describing myself as olive adjacent, as a pale muted neutral with a lot of superficial color; also, I sometimes say I’m two-toned. For example, I can wear both slightly warm & cool undertoned foundations, as long as the pigment isn’t saturated, and isn’t full coverage. It boils down to: I don’t respond to sunlight the way an olive can, and that’s the main reason why I don’t say cool olive. Also, I rarely see someone pegged olive who has the amount of superficial redness I have.

This is probably the 2nd or 3rd video where I tout about your intro being under 20 seconds. Thank you! Yep. Being of S.E. Asian descent, it was a no brainer that I've got a yellow undertone. I'm pretty pale so it's obvious I'm a light shade. Warm foundations were always too orange. Cool foundations were too pink. Neutrals were just about never a match either. The closest I had ever come to a perfect shade was when Fenty Profilter came out with their olive undertone range of what I was trying. Unfortunately at that time, my skin was going through some crazy things & the foundation was too drying. After my skin chilled out and after a couple years have passed, I now like something light-to-medium coverage so that Fenty foundation is still nothing I'd buy now. The next closest thing I found to a perfect match was CYO but then *ugh* that as well as the (more expensive) Soap & Glory dupe stopped being sold. Once my preference changed to a lighter coverage foundation, I got over it as well. Lol! Yes! A video about how to fix a wrong undertone foundation is a must! ♡♡♡ These days, I use pigment drops in SPF or a tinted moisturizer. Anything beyond that starts to annoy me - unless I'm trying to do something completely glam.
@26thofmay293 жыл бұрын
I think another side to this is how muted you are, a lot of the time olive = muted and a lot of what we're doing by adding blue or green to things is desaturating the hue. I've always assumed that I'm really pale but I'm not, I'm just super muted. I think that's probably a common mistake as people with muted colouring often think they look sick, which can make you think you're paler than you are. Adding some blue to a pale yellow saturated foundation (like Nars Gobi) can adjust both the lightness and the saturation to something almost perfect (for me). There are very few actual muted neutral foundations out there!
@mothmoth2243 жыл бұрын
I'm a muted cool-neutral and I also found out I'm not as pale as I thought. My overall look is very "watery" and my skin picks up color from the environment easily. (Beware fluorescent lighting!) Only a few companies make a good match for me. I also stopped wearing full-coverage foundations. Wearing medium or a buildable light foundation helps my natural undertone show through.

Good explanation of undertones….I think I’m a light-medium neutral, I have some pink and golden color but tend to buy too light of a foundation, mixing never crossed my mind…. Duh! I’m of Scandinavian decent but with others mixed in. Salt and pepper hair with dark brows. I tan easily. Any suggestions would be very helpful on colors for the eyes and foundation. Love ya!

It's definitely tricky at times. I'm very cool but often cool toned foundations are goin overkill on the pink whereas i need more blue

Because of you I started mixing in a green corrector into my foundation and I'm so happy with the result! I've always had base products look orange on my skin. I'm still not sure what my undertone is, but I'd recommend after you do the swatch test to get some samples and actually wear them at home.

I am not buying another concealer without asking someone in a store for help!! You are so right about undertones! I knew you were olive right away! Btw, I've been watching you forever, and I want to finally tell you how beautiful your eyes are! They pop with out any makeup!!💕💕

This makes so much more sense! I've been told I'm a fair cool, but I tend to choose warmer tones because fair-cool can sometimes make me look like I'm wearing stage makeup from the 1920s or something. I've learned to swatch my actual face and neck and not my arm in stores because the arm isn't always the best option to get the right color. The kitty in the box -- so cute!

Fixing a wrong undertoned foundation would be hugely helpful I think!! Especially because you can get the color drops to really customize & you'd only maybe need to grab 2 of them if you're close!

Quite pale olive here, more neutral but I have a lot of pink surface tones (rosacea) and yellow-grey-brown around my eyes (hereditary dark circles). My face looks darker than my neck because of the surface tones, so I have to do color correction to get full coverage, but I tend to lean more towards light coverage. My perfect match foundation is Alima Pure's Olive 0 I can wear both silver and gold but I lean more towards silver as it stands out. Darker jewel tones are my jam, plus cobalt blue, burgundy, teal, and true red. I love the OliveMUA subreddit and PaleMUA

i think u should look into peach undertone products. milk flex concealer & skin tint in honey, georgio armani 5.5, & nars radiant longwear sahel. yellow is too yellow and i can see theres red but blue and green tones look bad on me. so does silver.

i'm south asian and my undertone is this weird combo of warm-neutral with a little bit of olive. usually shade ranges that have the correct depth for my skin tone don't have the right undertone, so most of the time the base products i end up buying are incredibly yellow.

I can’t be the only one who has far too many foundations, concealers etc tucked away in a box because the undertones are a far cry from my actual skin colouring. Only holding on to them because they cost a lot of money or are an amazing product or waiting for a miracle to appear that will make it usable someday. Yes please please make more videos on this topic. Including the video idea mentioned where you make products with the wrong undertones miraculously work. Loved this awesome tutorial, all of your tutorials honestly, and sincerely thank you for helping me learn about this overwhelming and very frustrating topic. You truly are the Bestest! ❤️ from Shannon in Canada 🇨🇦

I have a neutral olive. I can wear warm or cool olive foundation but I can't tell which side the spectrum I'm on more. I will say every single thing looks very very orange or pink on me. All blush and lipstick unless very cool looks garish. I figured out that it's because I have also a LOT of grey in my skin so I am muted, not a lot of concentrated pigment works on me it has to be sheer or greyed out.

Fair, warm neutral. Smack bang between yellow, orange and pink. Yet overall makeup, cool toned neutral matte eyeshadows make me look ancient and grey. Brights (cool or warm) look great on me however.

I am a consultant for one of the large Skincare/Makeup brands. I am half Chinese. For the LONGEST time I thought I was a warmer/yellow undertone. I have SUCH trouble finding a good match for foundation.. The undertone is ALWAYS wrong... Too yellow or too ashy. But I've determined I'm also a warm olive undertone. But not many companies deal in 'olive' undertones!!! I finally found THE perfect shade of foundation for me... And I will literally cry if they discontinue it.

I seriously need a whole series on under tone. I am whitish-pink with blue undertones. Make-up people always try to put me in peachy colors and I end up looking red-orange. Sometimes I think I'd be better off wearing white-out instead of foundation. Your videos help a lot. Thanks!

Back in the day, Bobbi Brown recommended on Oprah that everybody use yellow undertone foundation to look the best. Then because I'm a pale little ghost, I heard I must be pink. It took me YEARS to realize that I'm actually pretty neutral and choosing the palest pink shade makes me look grey and too yellow makes me look sick. It's so tricky. This is top notch advice!!

That... sounds like some pretty dumb advice from a supposed renowned makeup artist. Like don't expect everyone to have the same undertones.🙄

STILA make a great primer with swirls of green and peach. It might have a third shade, I can't remember. I need to buy another one. It's great for covering redness. If I need a bit more I simply tap it into the desired spot. When swatching foundation I think it's best matched to the chest area..

I'm fair/light. Olive but warm I believe. I realize alot of stuff make me look grey. Cool tones like plums make me look sick and grey. I still don't know what is my skin shade but I normally go for darker shades. A medium warm skin product makes my skin pop even though it's bit darker then me. Any light shades make me look sick.

In an older book I have about coloring and what not, I read that warm skin tones can have a lot of pink in them, so take care not to confuse a warm skin tone with a cool one. On the other hand, a cool skin tone can have a lot of sallowness to it and appear yellow, so take care not to confuse a cool skin tone with a warm one. Pretty much, I've been confused ever since.

I'm a very fair warm olive. Everyone would say I was warm, but warm foundations were too yellow. I was color matched and told I was a "vibrant autumn" so needed bolder warm colors. That didn't work. A makeup artist said I was olive, but people said I couldn't be because I was so fair, and that olive was deep. That was wrong. I can be glow in the dark pale and also olive, with a sort of warmish tint, though not extremely warm.

Let’s all sit down with a pencil & paper and take notes from Professor Alex. I am 41 and have never been sure of my skin tone. If anyone can help me, I believe it’s Alex!!! 💜 My question: I am very fair with an undetermined undertone (some say cool some say warm). My chest is always very light even if I get sun because I wear SPF but my body tans. Do I match my face to my neck or match my face AND neck to my body? This isn’t an issue in the depths of Winter but right now there’s a definite shade difference to contend with. Thank you for these informative videos. I always walk away learning at least one new fact or technique!! 💜

I have to try that color corrector, so much stuff comes up too pink or too orange on me because I’m very neutral. Another point for people to be aware of - if you have a skin condition like rosacea it can fool your eye a bit and make you think you’re much pinker than you actually are. I have rosacea and if I match to the shade of my face I end up WAY WAY too pink even if I try to avoid the obviously red bits of my face. As you said I have to match to my inner arm to get something that actually picks up what my undertone is. Then I have to color correct the red bits. Though sometimes I let them show through if it’s a medium-ish coverage foundation, as I get sort of a blush effect from the red peeking through. But going to stores or whatever I kept being color matched as cool because of the redness and then it would look bad.
@dfc413 жыл бұрын
So I always thought I was just straight up pinky cool, and then had a ulta worker tell me I was more neutral. I feel like I see pink under my skin and yellow on the top 🤔 my veins are blue and I look good in royal purple and jewel tones but gold isn't awful on me. The best match I've ever found is the Maybelline dream liquid mousse in 30 Natural ivory but like you said, that doesn't tell me much with other brands because some shades they call natural ivory don't match. I was matched to something sands I a believe a tarte foundation.

I’m a fair olive with a neutral undertone. Unfortunately, many companies that make base products for olive skin tones seem to offer them more for those in the light-medium/medium to tan range. So… I’m often forced to go for anything in the fair-with-yellow-undertone shade. I’m still looking for a FRAGRANCE-FREE green color corrector for mixing… (I’m sensitive to fragrances in skincare and base products.) 😕
