Initially after seeing the trailer I gave it the benefit of the doubt that it was designed to purposely create anger in order to get people to hate watch the show, and that in reality, the show itself would be dialled back (still bad, but not horrendus), but after witnessing the first two episodes, boy was I mistaken....

My biggest problem with this show is how much it is filled with hatred towards almost everyone. How can somebody take such a wholesome concept as Scooby Doo and turn it into something this mean-spirited? And also look what they did to our lovable golden retriever of a man, Fred!

Even in shows like "It's Always Sunny" where the main characters are written to be assholes with few to zero redeeming qualities there are still moments of goodness and light: think Frank tearing up at Mac's dance routine in "Mac Finds His Pride," or how the Gang is willing to come together for each other when it actually matters. They're horrible people, but they're horrible people with hearts of gold. Think Stolas genuinely trying to be a better father to Octavia than Paimon was to him in "Helluva Boss." When a show about actual demons in literal Hell has more goodness and heart than your Scooby Doo spinoff YOU FUCKED UP.

I only made it through the first episode and you could make a lethal drinking game out of the number of times the characters blatantly say "this isn't like OTHER SHOWS" or just point out cliches/stereotypes exist without actually doing anything funny with it. Steve was generous when he said it was every 2 minutes. It's so cynical and feels almost snobby with the show implying it's above all of that while ironically being lazy and never actually trying to prove it's unique. I would have actually loved to see a slasher series in the Scooby Doo universe where tropes from both were subverted, but Velma seems to forget that to subvert tropes, you have to do more than just point out that those tropes exist and say you're different. You have to BE different. Even without the Scooby Doo paint on it, this is a really lazy take on the slasher/mystery genre.

I'm tired of right-wingers always assuming every action is money-motivated stop attributing the race swapping and anti-light racism to some secret brilliant marketing strategy (by the idiot mindy kaling) when it's much better explained by anti-white racism if the KKK was in in charge of producing television shows and you suddenly saw traditionally black characters being race swapped into white characters you wouldn't just assume that it was some brilliant marketing strategy. that they were only doing it for the money. they're the kkk. they hate black people. that's why they did it and it is the same situation here.. there's no shadowy cabal do you devising these "brilliant" strategies and only doing these things for money. accept the fact at the millennials who have wormed their way into many of the top positions at these companies are DEEPLY FUCKING RACIST there is no generation that hates white people more than millennials. except maybe gen z they've taken over teaching positions and they're now teaching generations of kids to hate white people as much as they do with the race-based critical race theory. the jokes themselves in the episode are racist. stop assuming that there was some brilliant strategy behind it and just look at the obvious solution that's in front of you that is the reason that they are trying to erase white people from media is because they HATE WHITE PEOPLE it's not a marketing strategy. they don't give a shit about money. they give a shit about the agenda. they are willing to lose money to change the world. in case that hasn't been obvious these people hate white people. and men. and christianity. and anything else associated with white men.. including America they're just trying to erase white people from media because they hate white people. there's no deeper strategy behind it. there's no deeper meaning that you need to look deep to find the reasons. the reason is right in front of you. they hate white people. they want to eliminate white people from the gene pool. they want a world without white people and if they can't have that they at least want a world where white people are discriminated against and at the bottom and possibly even enslaved.. don't tell me I'm wrong just look at South Africa and their farmers this is why they race swapped characters. because they both want to erase white people from media and also they can't stand to look at white people so they want to get rid of them in Media anyway. it's very simple and we need to start talking about it

Scoobs as noir detective, kicked off TSA vice when he ate a stash of pot brownies. Instead of dying, because dogs and chocolate being potentially very toxic (and THC hallucinations for that matter), he gained extra sensory powers that let him smell crime (or "mischief") from his double boosted near death experience. But, he is disgraced from the force and seen as a mockery, and his powers only work with weed infused "Scooby snacks." Thus, he must rely on the help of pot dealer Shaggy and his eccentric group of high school customers, who all share an irrational, paranoid obsession with criminal activity and especially the paranormal, in order to kind of bumblingy solve various petty mischief by getting a dog high and following it around. It's mostly displayed super serious, with no meta humor, just cutaways that show it is 90% played up in their heads, with collective delusions, etc. Even though they save the day. Usually. Any time someone brings up that a dog can talk, it's used to reinforce why something spooky might be happening. It's never confirmed whether Scoobs can actually talk to other characters. Bumbling stoner ghost hunters (give them a KZbin channel for "relevance" idgaf) successfully solving crimes, and maybe don't understand how they solved them? I'd watch that without the licensed tie-in. They still say fuck, and Scooby wears a trenchcoat so he looks like scruff mcgruff, the TV narc dog from the 90s that aired during commercials during cartoons. They still say jinkies and stuff so the casual swearing is extra absurd. I'd watch more than I'm watching Velma. Which would be any, at all.

I heard of the story of a at gunner in Stalingrad named burdyshev was sent to flank the Germans tank and was captured, and told them to attack their position's "weakest" point which was actually where they had their machine gun with last 250 rounds, and the gunner sent them all downrange at the German mob thinking they had ran out of ammo, they all scattered for cover and the gunner was hit in the hand but did not stop firing, about an hour later the Germans led burdyshev on a pile of rubble infront of us and shot him for leading them into my machine gun, we soon heard the sound of caterpillar tracks and knew it was over guardsmen said goodbye to one another and I carved into the wall "Rodimstevs guardsmen fought and died for their country here" a few months later during more research on a unit level this reappears, part of rodimstevs guardsmen sent an at gunner out to hit the advancing Germans and then sent them to their deaths in one last act of defiance, this hits deep, not an animated show about *wokeingrad*

Steve hit the nail on the head on Mindy's hypocritical statement about Velma's race. 'I don't need Velma to be Indian like me to identify with her. So let's make her Indian, like me.' Scooby-Doo has had a lot of characters introduced over the years. If they wanted to use that success to attract a bigger audience they could make a new cast in any color/size/orientation they want without rewriting the ones we know and love. I'm sure the franchise could handle some new blood for a different age group.

That's a pretty facetious argument though. I mean, the writing IS shit, but the fact that they couldn't work Scooby into it has nothing to do with that. A good writer isn't necessarily one that can make anything out of anything and fit anything into anything. You wouldn't say that the writers of, I don't know, Deadwood were bad writers because they couldn't work Scooby Doo into it. Any good writer would know that Scooby doesn't fit into the tone or the world of Deadwood. And the motivation seems similar here - Scooby, as a character, did not fit the themes, the tone, or the world of the show that they were going for. Nothing in that indicates bad writing. The bad writing of what is actually there is what indicates bad writing.

Velma is like Daria and the snooty ginger girl from Lilo and Stitch were combined to make the most obnoxiously snarky character that the creators could think up. It’s not even Velma at this point, it’s just “Pretentious self-insert in a Scooby Doo cosplay”. Edit: I like Daria. She isn’t a bad character. My point is that when you take her sarcastic wit and dial it up to 1000, you create an unlikable personality and any positive characteristics that character may have is overshadowed by their snarkiness. It’s like pouring a gallon of ketchup on a french fry… both things taste good, but when there’s way too much of one thing and way too little of another, the meal sucks. Velma took Daria’s personality and went way overboard with the edginess. Hopefully the creators learn from this and improve.

Velma is introduced attacking a naked girl (daphne) in a shower amongst other girls, then multiple times mentions how she would love to kill just so many people, then we find out that growing up she was horrible and over the course of years destroyed her mother's eye. The way the show comes off, if Scooby was in it, it would probably be Velma 'watching' Norville's dog, and then using peanut butter to pretend the dog is Fred while cracking jokes about peanut allergies or white people spending lots of money to watch. And I want to believe that's why Scooby wasn't allowed in the show.

I would have loved Fred to be the basic jock, i.e. the popular football player, but who has had a passion since childhood for the great mysteries of life: Atlantis, Stonehenge etc... Except that he is always misunderstood by his friends, who are not at all interested in this kind of history. During a party, he ends up talking to the girl he likes, Daphne, captain of the cheerleaders, and the conversation ends up deviating to Fred's passion for mysteries. Daphnee tells him about her passion for crime podcasts, especially those that remain unexplained or involve supernatural phenomena, such as the disappearance of a young girl who was in their university. The two end up spending the evening in a corner explaining their favorite cases and all their theories to each other but end up coming across some very rational articles debunking fake ghost videos written by a student from the same campus, Velma, also passionate about mysteries but very Cartesian in her approach. Daphne remains convinced that the mysterious disappearance of the girl is really supernatural and the two decide to contact Velma via social networks. Meanwhile, Shaggy and Scoobi also live on campus, where Shaggy works part time as a janitor because he can't afford college and they are victims of several supernatural phenomena in one of the university buildings. They too decide to go see Velma because they are terrified of what they have seen and they need to show it to an “expert”. And as time goes on, everyone meets and the team is formed.

I've honestly never seen a show that hates itself, it's audience, and its source material so much while continuing to exist. I mean Michael Haneke made "Funny Games" in many ways as a slasher film that hates slasher films and the sorts of people who choose to watch slasher films (ironically it's now become legendary within the horror fandom as one of the most effective and grueling slasher films ever made,) but there's a difference between a semi-avant garde auteur doing that sort of thing for a 90 minute arthouse film and a major production company doing it with one of their most profitable properties for a show that's supposed to become a long running series.

You know what was cool about the original team? They all came from different social backgrounds and yet they got along naturally. They had very different personalities, and would sometimes joke about it, but none ever talked down to the other the way they do in this show. By implication, this show making the cast more racially diverse but having them continuously snipe at one another seems less inclusive and more "this is why we all can't get along". Nowadays it seems like show writers can't fathom interpersonal relationships that aren't cynical or outright hostile.

“A R-rated origin story of how the scoobygang first got together, through the eyes of Velma, as she attempts to solve the mystery of her missing mother, but then a serial killer kills one of her classmates, Velma’s blamed for the crime, and she now needs to clear her own name.” Honestly pitched like that, the story could have been interesting, but the execution just isn’t there

Difference between Bojack and Velma is this. Bojack struck me similarly to a painting. As it starts out, it isn't anything, but it's perking your interest as it slowly unfolds into something interest. It also did a pretty good job at poking phone at tropes and issues that it wanted to. Velma is clearly just checking boxes of what's wrong with current hollywood writing. It's mean spirited, horribly written, and as always the white male character is treated like a buffoon to the point where he literally doesn't know how to cut up his own food on his plate. It's not going to get better. It's only going to get more mean spirited, before it inevitably makes a run against the audience as the ratings tank and the creator gets more pissy.

@@Elizabean1984 It's one-note shit; Dave Chappelle made these jokes constantly in his show without it getting old for either white or black people. I don't even mind racist humor but if a show resorted to the same jokes over and over again about any ethnic group the show would get old really fast. That seems to be a recurring theme, anyway. They ue that joke and the "we're so meta and self-aware" joke. You can't make a plurality of your comedy show's content about two jokes.

About Into the Spiderverse, I want to point out that Miles has existed prior to the movie. His backstory is somewhat of an adaptation of his origin comic; Spiderman dies and Miles becomes the new Spiderman, but is inexperienced. He's both trying to fill big shoes while also being his own person. If people think Miles is just a race-swapped Peter, they clearly don't know Miles. Especially since Peter already existed in Miles' universe. Also, for Scooby not being in the show, Warner Bros. outright forbade them from using Scooby.
@joshwillingham4592
@joshwillingham4592 Жыл бұрын
Yep. Miles works perfectly fine. *Especially* the way they did it in Into the Spider Verse. He's an inheritor of a mantle in a sense, and they pass it off respectfully, with old veteran Peter Parker along with a bunch of AU spidies (something they've done with the spiderman story before) acting as mentors. The race of the character was only very lightly related to the story. Who he was as a person was first and foremost, and he was neither just a race swapped version of the original, nor was their treatment of the old guard horrible. Granted Peter was at a somewhat embarrassing low point, but to be fair that's like 80% of his story arcs, and having to be a teacher woke the hero back up.

Funny thing about this character, you look her up on heroes wiki you’ll never find her on heroes wiki. You can only find her on villains wiki. She is described as a obsessed egotist. The crimes she commits is just unbelievable. The part about her being run over it was hilarious. I mean I don’t know what they were thinking adding Mindy Kaling on there. As far as I’m concerned with Puss in boots, last wish being a meme with your own irredeemable monster apparently there was a joke made where Scooby Doo fans call Mindy Kaling an irredeemable monster
Regretfully, I watched the rest of Velma...
