The graphics and soundtrack of Okami were nothing like I had ever seen or heard when I first saw it, and there is still nothing else like it out there. It feels like you are playing a 3D Zelda game where you happen to be a wolf the whole time, while looking like one of those old Japanese paintings.

Okami is a bit of a hidden gem. Nowadays a fair amount of people know about it but commercially it didn't do too well back then despite being a fantastic game. As a short rundown I'd describe it as Legends of Zelda like gameplay but placed in a japanese mythology setting, traditional heroes journey, charming, nature themed, emotional with an incredibly satisfying and uplifting ending and of course an artstyle that is completely unique in the space of video games (it's inspired by ukiyo-e). All around a truly incredible game.

This is the final battle theme of Okami and plays after Reset (Thank You). The people have given Amaterasu and the gods their powers back through prayer, and now there is nothing Yami can do to stop you. Absolutely one of my favorite finales in gaming, and an epic theme to end your long and epic adventure with.

This game literally saved my life. My family was so poor, I was playing a demo of this game on an old PS2 demo disk, I'd play it nonstop until my family got me one Christmas present, this game! Thorough my darkest times this game kept me staying good and true. As a little kid I had no sense of religion or anything to keep me in like, this game gave me so much sense of good, regardless of how people treat you or what you go through. Such an absolute masterpiece

Okami, not having any dialogue inflection to emphasize drama (as all dialogue was presented via text crawl with Animal Crossing-esque babbling noises), really felt like it used orchestral building blocks to slowly ramp up the feelings that the soundtrack put into your heart. This song is a mix of melodic and rhythmic elements from many of the other songs you've heard during your journey: some representing cultures of people in the game, some based on area background tracks, some resembling music that went alongside fun or inspiring activities you took part in. Amaterasu is the whole of her journey's parts, and being a deity, she's experienced more than we'll ever know...which the writers love to play with as well.

Fun fact, back in 2019 Famitsu (widely considered the most read and respected gaming magazine in Japan) ran a poll asking readers for their favorite VGM, and The Sun Rises won I personally would have a different answer but looking at the results I basically thought, "yeah that's fair" ...and for anyone wondering what the runner-ups were: 1) The Sun Rises (Okami) 2) Scars of Time (Chrono Cross) 3) To Zanarkand (Final Fantasy X) 4) Battle on the Big Bridge (Final Fantasy V) 5) Yearnings of the Wind (Chrono Trigger) It seems RPGs really stuck with most of the voters, but Okami was the exception and won over all of them

The context behind this song is that you are the goddess of the sun who is fighting a losing battle as the demonic final boss has destroyed your sources of power and has you at his mercy. But before he can finish you off, all those whom you helped begin praying to you for your success which, since worship sustains the divine, restores you to full power and then some. This song starts playing after that power boost and at this point, your full power coming through has just completely tipped the scales in the other direction.

Fun little fact for Wrestling fans, before Asuka signed to WWE, she came out to this song while in the Japanese indie scene. Imagine this badass woman in golden robes and bloody clown makeup coming out to kick your ass and this grand, epic song was playing. I do believe she had special permission to use the song too as she actually worked in the videogame industry in between wrestling gigs.

The wolf you play as in this game, Amaterasu, is the Shinto goddess of the Sun. The most basic description of this game that I can give you is that the world is being drained of color and nature, and it's Amaterasu's job to restore life and peace to the land. Much of the theming in Okami is based around this motif of beauty and nature, and when you're playing the game with its gorgeous artstyle you really get sucked in. Amazing game, highly recommend it if you enjoy adventure games.

Okami is one of those games where every second is fantastic. The gameplay, art style, the music, all of it. For context, this is the final battle theme, sometimes called Amaterasu's theme. In it, you play as Amaterasu, the shinto goddess of the sun, taking the mortal form of a white wolf. Throughout the game, you use a combination of art and combat techniques to fight demons, and this song plays in the final phase of the final boss. The boss, Yami, has stripped you of your godly powers, and through the prayers of all the people you met throughout the game, you get them back. "The Sun Rises," and you defeat the "lord of darkness" for good. It's so wonderfully done, and this song wraps the entire game up.

I'm a bit late to the party but to explain Okami in one sentence: It's basically if shintoism (the most common japanese religion which has strong similarities to buddhism) and japanese folklore was made into a Zelda-like action adventure game. As a more thorough description: It's a Zelda-like game, with more focus on dialogue and combat and less on puzzles. The game basically embodies all principles of shintoism with Amaterasu (the wolf, which is an embodiment of the goddess of the sun) restoring balance, life and peace to the land, even going as far as rewarding you for letting trees etc blossom and for feeding wild animals that roam around the world. Okami also contains a lot of characters from japanese folklore like Amaterasu's partner Issun, who is a tiny swordsmen (with his own fairy tale), that basically does all the talking for Amaterasu and sometimes the player. It's artwork is heavily based on sumi-e, which is the classic ink wash painting style from the 14th-18th century in Japan and other asian countries. That art style made it a beautiful game even back then on PS2 and it still looks amazing in the HD remasters on Steam, PS4 etc.

Okami is such a beautiful game. Both visually and in sound. It's like you're in a traditional Japanese nature painting and listening to... this. Can absolutely recommend trying it if you ever find the chance. It should be available on both Steam and Switch (Switch is handy as I can use the screen for the drawing mechanic).

Moving forward and running is something you do a lot of in Okami so your comment about that is very relevant lol. Best part is there is actually a good feeling of speed as your camera follows behind you as the white wolf pictured and flowers and grass spring up behind you like a trail as you're running.

First & forever my no. 1 game!! The theme you played was for the final boss fight & it’s the main character’s final (form) theme. The entire OST was played with traditional Japanese instruments, eg the ‘eagle’ sound is from a type of flute. Should really check out the entire 5-disc OST collection. Seriously it’s good to play the songs as ambience in the background when working & drawing.

If I would give this game a personal award it would be "aged really well". It released in 2006 (on the same day as Mother 3, btw. Both games having a nature vs technology theme), and its sumi-e art style and music make it timeless. The controls also still feel really good and the game is eadily available on most current gen platforms, which is almost rare nowadays. The game is heavily based on japanese mythology (namedropping gods like Amaterasu, Susano, Tsukuyomi, Izanami, Izanagi etc) and japanese folktales (the tongue-cut sparrow, Urashima Taro, Taketori Monogatari etc.) and as mentioned before, it's theme is nature vs technology, Amaterasu representing nature and light and this theme plays while she's fully powered up and ready to brawl. While technology represents darkness and decay. Also, Amaterasu may be a silent protagonist but she got SASS and I love it.

My close friend in high school absolutely loved this game when it first came out, but I never had the chance to play it myself until 2020 when I bought the switch. We are both artists so we had a strong appreciation for the art style. It is a masterpiece of beauty, even today. I'm not that skilled or fast of a gamer, so I spent a fair amount of time listening to this as I beat the boss, and it was such an emotional experience. It was really a big letdown for this game to end, I was emotionally drained for the rest of the day, and probably for the rest of my life lol

That very high pitched hawk-like sound is a kind of Japanese flute. I wanna say it's a nohkan, but I could be wrong. Def check out some traditional Japanese instruments, there are some cool motifs and sounds they use in that genre/ style and Okami does an amazing job at presenting them.

Love this game ❤! I can’t recommend it enough. And, since they released HD updates for PS4 and Xbox, it isn’t too hard to get ahold of. If you like the Legend of Zelda gameplay style, this is a good one to pick up. The plot weaves in a lot of Japanese mythology and lore. Including some of the more tragic elements (not everyone you meet gets a happy ending). It also has themes of duty, sacrifice, and faith. The combat can feel a little clunky at first, but as you unlock new moves and weapons (and acclimate to the controls), you start to feel like the god your character is. Plus, the divine brush mechanic is a really fun and interesting way to interact with the game environment.
