It is a glow-head engine and was developed from about 1918 by engineer Fritz Huber. It works according to the Akroyd method with internal mixing and external ignition (so it is not a diesel engine). Unlike the original Akroyd engine, which is a four-stroke engine, the bulldog engine operates in two-stroke with crankcase flushing. The compression is low, not higher than with gasoline engines of that time. Therefore, the engine does not have auto-ignition, but requires an ignition source. The ignition source is the so-called evaporator (also called glühnase) in the cylinder head; it glows with a slight red glow during operation. The fuel is injected at low pressure into the evaporator, where it evaporates and ignites on the hot walls. To start the evaporator must therefore be brought to glow with a soldering lamp. If the temperature of the incandescent head has fallen too low (e. g. due to long idling), the temperature of the walls serving as the ignition source is no longer sufficient to initiate ignition safely, so that the incandescent engine shuts down. Later variants with an additional spark plug could be started with petrol and were converted to diesel fuel after they had been warmed up. Spark plugs and injection nozzles are located in the cylinder head.

On that sheet of paper, you could read "Eilbulldog", which translates to hurry_Bulldog.; which were the faster going road version, made for trailing heavy loaded trailers ( up to 2 at once) instead of trucks. And they could double the speed of the agricultural versions. So this was a "normal" road going version of the 1930s withe norma truck hitch and gauges and license plate. Oftentimes circuses had those to trail their Loads and animals and wooden housing trailers.

The Lanz single cylinders are everything but quiet, but a show-off Harley is way louder! The Bulldogs aren't too bad there. The Eilbulldog is not made for agricultural work but for short to mid distance heavy hauling. When I was a kid, I still sometimes saw them pull circus wagons in the early Seventies here in Germany. There were versions of the Hanomag R40 that were used this way. These tractors basically were a mix between heavy haulage trucks and tractors. They had increased top speeds and a comfier cabin that would not kill you when driving for two hours straight.

The ailing Heinrich Lanz AG, based in Mannheim, was taken over by John Deere at the end of the 1950s and was fully integrated into their company until around 1964, and a once highly respected name associated with the mechanization of German and intra-European agriculture was lost. the years mentioned are a rough point to give context of when

Road tractors are the grandfathers of today's trucks. Back in the day they were used for hauling goods to any place that the railways didn't reach, when needed over far distances too. They reached about twice the speed of their agricultural brothers, which was pretty respectable in a world that didn't know any Autobahn or Interstate highway systems yet. Lanz wasn't the only company making road tractors. Hanomag made them too. If you want to see something impressive, look up Hanomag SS-100 or ST-100. At first glance it looks like a 1930's version of an oversized SUV, but it's one of the biggest road tractors ever built. 8.5 liter inline-6 diesel, 360 foot-pound of torque, you will love it.

Lanz had build different Versions of their Tractors. Some were more for the Fields to work a Machine, some were more to pull Trailer, some were for different "Fuels" and so on. The Bulldog you can see in this Video seems to be an "Eilbulldog" (Hurry-/Rush-Bulldog) with an "Overdrive"-Gear to run faster than normal, a solid Cabin (or like here as Convertible). You can also see the typical european Trailer-Hitch for Semi-Trucks/Tractors. I'm not sure, i think a Semi-Truck is allowed to pull 1 Trailer, a Tractor 2 to 3. That's why they were used by Circus and traveling Fairs, also by the german Army at both WorldWars...

The John Deere tractor there is the great-great-great-grand-son of the "Lanz Eilbulldog" tractor. Not only literally, but figuratively. The Heinrich Lanz Company based in Mannheim, Germany was bought by the John Deere Company in 1956. So that "show" was basically a family gathering, including many generations of the same product, formerly produced by Lanz, now by John Deere

This is called an Eilbulldog (something like hurry bulldog). It was a road version of the agricultural Bulldog, geared for much faster speed and with smooth road tires and fenders and a cabine, and marketed as an alternative for lorries / trucks. And since it didn´t have a loading space of its own and was so short, it was allowed to pull two trailers.

Those „Eilbulldogs“ like the red one were widely used up into the 1960‘s, even 1970‘s by circuses and funfair showmen to tow their (large) trailers for living and equipment / attractions. Usually at least two long trailers, sometimes a third, short one as well. Later the Bulldogs (and similar tractors by other manufacturers like Hanomag, Kaelble, Faun) were replaced by regular trucks. Due to maximum allowed length they often used cabover semis with a short(ened) flatbed. BTW the company that built the Bulldogs, Heinrich Lanz at Mannheim was bought in 1956 by John Deere. From 1960 - 1967 they renamed the company in John Deere - Lanz, from 1967 on just John Deere.

These things have been used to pave roads in the thirties because the asphalt was made plain with a heavy roll out of concrete which was pulled over the hot tarmac. These things weighed 3 tons so the Eildog could pull three of these rolls in a line behind him.. at a speed of 20 to 25 kmh or 12 to 15 miles per hour… these lanz or all prewar. The postwar bulldogs have a rounded hood and war mostly light versions for agricultural use.

Nice one! This tractor is a great oldtimer :) And that two-stroke diesel sound... fantastic. The German plates on these tractors end with the letter H, meaning Historisch (historic). So that's for oldtimers like these tractors. It is not uncommon to see tractors on the road here in The Netherlands too, especially in agricultural areas. Modern tractors are a lot bigger, heavier, faster, less loud, more fuel efficient and more comfortable of course. All tractors should have registration plates and are fully road legal.

There were three classes of Bulldog: the Field Bulldog, the Street Bulldog and the Rush Bulldog. The last one reaches about 35 km/h, 21 mph. It was intended to tow one or two heavy trailers on the road. During this time, trucks reached speeds of up to 40 km/h, 25 mph. It was later decided that vehicles on Autobahn had to drive faster than 60 km/h, 37.9 mph. This made many old street tractors and trucks obsolete.

After World War II, communists in Poland produced a copy of the Lanz Bulldog D 9506 called Ursus C-45 . The C-45 had a single-cylinder, two-stroke engine with a maximum power of 33 kW (45 HP) and a displacement of 10,300 cm3. The gearbox was 3-speed. The first C-45 with serial number 0001 worked 12,000 hours without the need for overhauls. Approximately 6,000 C-45 and C-451 tractors were exported to Brazil, China and Korea. Then, in 1954, a modernized version called Ursus c 451 was created in Poland . These changes included simplified operation, a more efficient fan, a case-hardened crankshaft, a headlight, a hydraulic lifter, and starting gasoline injection. A metal frame was attached to the windshield, rear fenders were installed, and a canvas cab was added. Production of the C-451 in Warsaw ended in 1959, and a total of 50,000 units were built.

Actually they´re permanent "07"-Plates for historic cars/self-propelled anythings older than 30 years. And with those you are allowed to drive multiple cars (up to ten IIRC) on one number. They´re officially confined to test- and maintenance-purposes, but those also include journeys to car meetings and generally everything that serves the "purpose of preservation of old technology". So, in reality, you can run them on a daily basis - i ran my 1980 Mercedes 380 like that for several years without a single complain by the cops.

Esse veiculo é considerado trator, todos os veículos matriculados podem circular na via publica, se repararam ele tem um triangulo amarelo na parte de cima junto ao vidro que significa que é veiculo agrícola.

No, the yellow triangle indicates that the tractor is hauling trailer(s). No longer a law in Germany, it changed (IIRC) in the 1960‘s. Technically it must folded down, as he had no trailer attached.

In Germany you see a lot of tractors on the streets recently but most people don't admire their beauty. Instead, they are quite offended by all this great machines. Although they carry around large pieces of cardboard with funny jokes! 🪧🚜🚗🚙🛻🚙🚚🛻🚛🚚🛻🚙 People just don't have that respect for excellent work of engineering anymore!
