2:50 - it's actually still hardware emulation! The ROM code is being directly read by the FPGA - no software emulation layers or anything! the literal only difference is that the code is stored on the microSD card instead of the game cart. SO, really no compromises in terms of the gameplay

Spiritualized is not a stranger. He's been part of the FPGA dev community for quite some time & is just going by a different name. Back when the Pocket first came out they were in search of established FPGA developers whom they could send Pocket hardware to in hopes of having them develop cores for the system. This is the result of that work over the past several months. These are not the same official Analogue cores used in the system itself. The fact that these have been worked on for months now is why they are so accurate. New cores that we start to see ported over from the MISTer will take some time before they are as accurate as these ones that Spiritualized gave us.

"It's one step further away from that hardware emulation a lot of us bought this thing for" I feel like Bob just doesn't understand how FPGAs work. It's working the same way as before the only difference is where it's reading the game from; the SD card slot instead of the cartridge slot. It's not suddenly using traditional software emulation just because it's reading roms. The games should play exactly the same my guy. ^ The above statement is assuming the open cores were released by Analog as Bob suggests in the video. Also I'm aware he was talking about reading carts in this particular quote but throughout the video he suggests the open cores may be using software emulation, which isn't how FPGAs work.

Tennis For Two is a demo from 1958 that often gets cited, and then there's Bertie the Brain (1950) and OXO (1952) which were both versions of Tic Tac Toe. So, like, yeah. To use a not-quite-accurate analogy, when it comes to simulating the real thing, software emulation is to painting as FPGA simulation is to sculpture. Basically, a software emulator running on a CPU is dividing up its time between tasks. These days, it does that so fast you don't need to make sacrifices like give up sound to get decent speeds (the 2000s were a savage time), but there's still latency introduced as the software emulator plays a bit of sound, then updates the graphics, then checks the input handler, then goes back to sound, and so on. FPGA simulation starts with a big lump of unallocated logic. The hardware description file tells all that logic how it relates to eachother, to synthesize the actual hardware that ran the software. So there's a small processor that loads the hardware description, but after that, the software is running directly on the hardware being simulated. We're at a point where software emulation is really good enough, so the difference is kind of minimal these days, but there is still a difference. Software emulation is generally results-focused, not process-focused, so often, to make things work acceptably, shortcuts and hacks are implemented which might not accurately replicate the original behavior. See, for example, N64 emulation, which is still surprisingly inaccurate today. Things like the video screens in Mario Kart 64 tracks that pull information from the framebuffer usually don't work. Nintendo's own N64 emulation in Nintendo Switch Online didn't do fog correctly in Ocarina or Majora. These come from shortcuts taken to keep the gameplay acceptable. FPGA on the other hand is entirely process-focused. It is blind to the results, and just focuses on replicating the WAY something is done, which should produce an identical result to the original hardware. A lot of people don't see the point in FPGA consoles right now, or if they do they're the same kind of twats who think vinyl is higher quality (it's objectively not, it was a cheap, mass market alternative to open-reel players of the time, you can PREFER the sound of vinyl all you want, but it's absolutely one of the lowest quality audio formats ever produced, don't say it's better). When we see an FPGA N64 or Saturn console, then the choir of angels will sing, and the most hard-headed "why not just use a Raspberry Pi?" guy will understand the difference.
@kytta2 жыл бұрын
Just an aside to the vinyl thing, yes vinyl is worse when it comes to technical audio quality if you are simply playing a track at regular speed. But as a DJ, the magic of the vinyl comes from the analogue part while mixing and manipulating the disc on the fly. When you're changing the pitch (the speed the vinyl is played) and seeking through the record, the kind of direct feedback you get from manipulating a physically turning disk on the turntable is unmatched by any digital player out there that manipulates the audio digitally. It just *feels* different. That's one of the main things why I love playing vinyl still to this day, and I can vouch for a large community of vinyl playing DJs that feel the same way. And when it comes to the audio quality, vinyl is just simply good enough. If the conditions are ok (there's not too much dust on the record, the vinyl and the needle are not deteriorated too much and there's no major vibrations coming to the turntable) and the DJ is adjusting the EQ correctly it still sounds excellent. And a bit of crackling is arguably kind of charming. Digital players have been of course getting much better in recent years and obviously it gives more options and tools available to the DJ that simply aren't doable with vinyl players (looping, autosync etc.), but I think there will always be a place for physical media in music.

Hardware emulation is the same as "no emulation". FPGA's lock, or unlock transistor pathways in their cores, so their physical electronic paths are the SAME as official hardware. This is why an FPGA only has the lag of a wireless controller, or a modern screen, but no lag itself, while software emulation requires multiple computation cycles to function, because it is a computer program running in a computer program. This is why software emulation has at least a frame of input lag. Analogue should describe hardware emulation in these terms, because people are getting hung up on the term "emulation", and not realizing emulation in the physical space is superior to emulation in computational cycles. It is not a "trap".

🤣🤣🤣 The pocket still hasn't been "hacked". This is a core intended for use with open fpga. We still don't have full root access to the device. But we can definitely run cores now, which means emulation and roms off SD card. 🥳 Topic 2: you still have a need for flash carts. The cores, as they are released now, do not have access to all the features of the pocket. Therefore things like Real Time Clock (RTC) and display filters do not work on these cores. However, the pocket is now more compatible (in my testing) with the flash carts such as Omega DE and GBX7. ODE can now load through Mode B and flash carts in general can now sleep and wake. (However ODE resets to the user interface if not loaded into Mode B). The cores also have trouble with some accessories and games and bugs need to be worked out in general.

When did we start calling hardware cloning “hardware emulation?” …when people objected to what distinguishes it from traditional software emulation. No one calls the 1chip an SNES “emulator.” It’s a hardware clone… and so is FPGA. Obviously, hardware clones aren’t automatically 100%, which is why I used the SNES 1chip example. It’s still hardware running the code natively. It is not interpreting the code to execute it on a non-native platform. That’s the distinguishment.

My introduction to emulating retro games was the rg35xx+ and its awesome. I will say that i just got an analogue pocket and theres no comparison in terms of feel in hand. Ill always be appreciative of my 35xx+ tho

Now, I always wanted one of these just because I wanted a great way to play my physical copies, but once you brought up save states that sold me on wanting one more so I can play crystal without a working battery. I mean emulation is also awesome but that save state feature sold me

The main point is they were never bsing. Those who truthfully know how FPGA works knows the advantages it has over software Emulation. Clearly that's what they were referring to with the whole "Not Emulation" thing. Ppl are up in arms over some simple wording semantics. Pretty petty if you ask me.

still spreading false ad, mr. investor? ALL INTENDED CLONING FEATURES by design is not emulation just because you paid PREMIUM price for it? LOL

Dude, it has not been hacked! They are simply allowing for FPGA development on the system, which was the intended functionality all along. Nothing has been hacked. It's simply running community made cores now, that's all. Those cores just happen to allow you to load ROMS from your MicroSD. If we ever get a Jailbreak firmware from you know who himself, one that uses the official cores but allows MicroSD loading, THEN you can call it "hacked". That will never ever happen though under this interface cus it would mean everyone would have full access to the coding for their proprietary cores, and Analogue simply isn't going to allow that.

0:02 That "hack" was 💩 but thanks for reporting it - it made me realize, Analogue Pocket is in its infancy 🙀

This device should handle cores for any game system that doesn't require analog sticks.

I'm glad I picked mine up from eBay earlier this year before things started happening (and they were way cheaper!). It's a really nice device and having these cores is a huge upgrade over the ROM carts I was using.

There's a GB/GBC core that supports the Pocket's RTC now too, so no more Pokemon romhacks forcing you to manually set the clock each time you start the game. Hopefully GBA core with RTC comes soon.

It's nice, just too expensive. My modded GBA collection does the job.

Gone that route too and feel like the AP is barely worth it. The audio filters and clean headphone out being my favorite part.

And this is what I was waiting for! Unfortunately have to wait until 2023 :/ || But this does open the door to having something docked into the back of the console now aside from the catridge. Some customizeable third party option..

Really looking forward to seeing some more cores now, like the Neo Geo Pocket Color

It would be great it could also rip my cartridges onto an SD card along with the saves. I hope it gets implemented at some point.

Save states on the SD-Card loaded games, that’s huge! I wish my NT Mini Noir had that feature on the jailbreak!…

Bob should seriously make his own emulator gadgetry. I'm sure that he's gotta have some connections with the emulator dev community, and he's got some serious knowledge about it himself. Call it the Baab Deck, slap the Wulff Den logo on it. I'd buy it.
