Okayama Tramway | 岡山電気軌道

Okayama has the smallest tram network in Japan. The entire network has two lines with a total length of just 4.6 kilometres , yet it even has its own tram museum. Untypical for Japanese tramway networks are the consistent island platforms in the middle of the street. The vehicles are again quite diverse. In addition to 12 tram cars of the 7000 to 7700 series from the 1980s and 5 tram cars of the 7900 series from the 1990s, a two-car low-floor train of the 9300 series with its nickname "MOMO" has been introduced in 2002. In 2018 a second set of this type ("MOMO 2") entered in service. Momo means peach in Japanese - and hardly anywhere in Japan are there as many peaches as around Okayama.
There is also a type of excursion tram nicknamed "Okaden Chuggington" (after the British animated series) that shuttles between Okayama station and the Higashiyama Tram Museum. Apart from the external appearance, this set is also a part of the 9300 series.
Another "special" vehicle is tram car 7101 "Tama Densha" which advertises the Wakayama Dentetsu, a small local railway company in Wakayama Prefecture. Their mascot and stationmaster of the Kishi terminus of the Kishigawa line is a cat named Tama ;).
We will also have a short look at Okayama's main attraction that is undoubtedly the black "Crow Castle", whose origins date back to 1346.

Das gesamte Streckennetz ist gerade einmal 4,6 Kilometer lang, dennoch gibt es sogar ein eigenes Straßenbahnmuseum. Untypisch für japanische Straßenbahnen sind die konsequenten Mittelbahnsteige in Straßenmitte. Es gibt gleich zwei Linien mit einem durchaus abwechslungsreichen Fuhrpark. Neben 12 Triebwagen der Reihen 7000 bis 7700 aus den 1980er Jahren und 5 Triebwagen der Reihe 7900 aus den 1990er Jahren gibt es seit 2002 auch einen zweiteiligen Niederflurzug der Reihe 9300 mit dem Spitznamen "MOMO". Eine zweite Garnitur dieses Typs ("MOMO 2") kam 2018 hinzu. Momo bedeutet im Japanischen Pfirsisch - und kaum irgendwo in Japan gibt es so viele Pfirsische wie rund um Okayama herum.
Nahezu jeder Wagen hat eine Vollwerbung und zeigt sich in gänzlich anderen Farben, sodass es recht bunt zu geht. Eine besondere Werbung hat Wagen 7101, dieser wirbt als "Tama Densha" für die Wakayama Dentetsu, eine kleine Lokalbahngesellschaft in der Wakayama Präfektur. Deren Maskottchen und Stationsvorsteher des dortigen Endbahnhof Kishi der Kishigawa Linie ist eine Katze mit dem Namen Tama ;).
Außerdem gibt es eine Art Ausflugsbahn mit dem Spitznamen "Okaden Chuggington" (nach der gleichnamigen britischen Animationsserie), die zwischen dem Bahnhof Okayama und dem Straßenbahnmuseum Higashiyama pendelt. Abgesehen vom äußeren Erscheinungsbild entspricht diese Garnitur technisch der Reihe 9300 und wird auch dieser zugeordnet. Eine Mitfahrt kostet je nach Wochentag 1.900 oder 2.000 Yen für Kinder sowie 3.400 oder 3.500 Yen für Erwachsene. Darin enthalten ist der Eintritt ins Straßenbahnmuseum, eine Tageskarte für die Straßenbahn und Souvenire.
Wir werfen ebenfalls einen kurzen Blick auf Okayamas Hauptsehenswürdigkeit, die elegante schwarze "Krähenburg", deren Ursprünge auf das Jahr 1346 zurückgehen.

もう一つの”特別”な車両は、和歌山県の小さなローカル鉄道会社である和歌山電鉄の広告塔、市電7101号車「たま電車」です。和歌山電鉄のマスコットキャラクターで、貴志川線の終点である貴志駅の駅長は、猫の「たま」なのです（笑）。
また、岡山県の代表的な観光スポットである、1346年に建てられた黒い「カラス城」も少し見ていきます。

Thanks so much for another great video from Japan. My husband and I really love Okayama and visit quite often as it has such interesting rail connections. The castle and the Korakuen garden across the river from it are just lovely. Glad you saw the "Chuggington" tram that runs to the museum at the end of the tram line that crosses the river. Children really love it and they play a special Chuggington song too. The Tama tram was good to see - the Okayama tramway company owns the railway in Wakayama prefecture with the station with cat stationmasters! Tama herself passed away a few years ago but she has been followed by able replacements!

I also really enjoyed staying in Okayama, also because of the good connections in all directions as you said (beside Okayama itself it allows possible daytrips to Shikoku and some Setouchi islands or even the large cities of Kansai or Hiroshima). Would definetly love to visit again some day :)

Hello my friend. Do you remember me? I juuuust "re-found" your channel again by chance, and overly happy to see you posted a few new videos from Southern Japan. (when did you visit there?) Very nostalgic for me to watch this one and also from Kagoshima, both places I've been several times. (That said, I moved from Tokyo to Bangkok 2 1/2 years ago, but moving back to Tokyo this coming May) I hope you are doing well despite the "pandemic campaign" and all. ^^ Warm greetings from Bangkok to..... Hi Thomas, of course I remember, how are you doing? I hope you are fine! :) We exchanged quite a lot back in 2013/2014. I just had my first visit to Japan at that time and was really hyped about places all over this country (it actually continued until now^^). Over the years I was a bit busy with studying and now full time work. While I didn't uploaded many videos, I still sometimes got to travel around. These videos from southern Japan were actually from a large trip in 2019 when I was in Japan for a three months internship. Recently I just felt to upload a few a few videos again, maybe I should put a bit more effort in it and edit some more (when time and motivation allow for it^^). I definitely need to have a look on your channel again, on a first glance I already saw such a huge variety of beautiful landscapes of Thailand. Wusste damals selbst weder von der Existenz der Serie noch dieses Fahrzeugs, war schon ein sehr ungewohnter aber irgendwie auch erheiternder Anblick^^ Ist alles von 2019, am Fahrzeugeinsatz dürfte sich in der Zwischenzeit zumindest dort aber nichts wesentliches geändert haben. (Damals war ich knapp 4 Monate im Land gewesen - war letztlich eine echt schöne Zeit, für die ich sehr dankbar bin. Nur für Videos hatte ich bisland nie wirklich Zeit, Lust und Motivation gehabt, um alles mal zu verarbeiten...)
