Hi guys, today we are taking a look at the OKC 499. This is a modern commercial version of the jet pilot survival knife that was adopted by the US just after the Korean war.

The holes in the guard are to tether the knife to the survival vest, primary reason, all survival items are tethered to the survival vest

I absolutely LOVE your channel. The purpose of the 2 holes in the cross guard is to run some 550 paracord through and lash it to a staff or limb or whatever to make it into a spear. The thought being in a crash scenario a spear could be used to get large fish or even larger game. I have so enjoyed your channel since I found it. You have also cost me a lot of $ making me want new stuff. Keep the videos coming. Thanks

An absolute favorite of mine. FYI - a company called MILPAR made these during the Vietnam war 1964-1966, and Utica also made them from 1964-1966. MILPAR also made a version with a cast aluminum handle, those are all hard to find but still out there. This is one collecting rabbit hole I have been down since I was a kid and used my dad's USAF issued knife.

I'm definitely keeping my distance from them. Otherwise I will end up with 20

@@pointynotsharp8436 Twenty at least. I'm pretty sure I have more than that...

I think the 499 mod doesn't have the indents on the blade sides or the top front edge sharpened. Which would both save on production cost

Camillus made them until they went bankrupt in 2007. They lost the military contract mid 1980’s. Camillus where available for sale in regular commercial & military stores until they went under. Classic knife. Warning new OKC’s are hit or miss QC. I can vouch for this as well as a few KZbin videos. I hope they fixed their issues. Regardless it’s still a classic.

Great knives, under appreciated in the collecting scene. Watch eBay I’ve got two cheap recently.

do you consider it a bowie knife due the blade type?
@pointynotsharp8436 Жыл бұрын
I would class a Bowie knife as a large knife with a clip point. While this knife has a clip point I think it is a bit small to call a Bowie knife. That said, calling it a Bowie style blade could still be correct

Still "pointy, not sharp" . . . unless you thin the edge.

You really should know your subject before doing video on it. Some of your info is incorrect on this item.

Do you have any references you would recommend? I struggled to find good info on these

Ah yes. One of the shittiest fixed blades that can still be purchased in the modern day
