Master Shinjo is badass. In Okinawa they call him Superman. He can party all night while you rest and then train till you puke. He won the Okinawan tournament so many times they asked him if he would retire so someone else could have a chance. I've met him and he is a serious man.

Well said!. Not everyone studies martial arts to fight in the ring. Traditional Martial Arts are a true 'ART'. We do this because we love the art! =)

What the French guy said at the intro: "Hello, welcome to Okinawa! This little island shares trade between Japan, Korea, China and the Philippines but having net as the greatest home of Karate. As for you all today, especially for Karate Bushido." That's about the gist of it.

I'm glad I studied French after leaving Okinawa. I found this very informative Nice to see the new Dojo. I heard that the old Dojo in Futenma was sold after the death of Sensei Kanei Uechi. I have many memories of training under Sensei Uechi at the Futenma Dojo and the many good people I met there.

Okinawan karate especially is not designed for ring competition. Many of the techniques are considered illegal and even considered to be cheap shots. It was a style designed to end a conflict quickly with an emphasis on survival. Most karate practioners never reach the level of conditioning of okinawan black belts.

Of course what is the use of spear hand strike- for the face eyes, throat; the one knuckle or extended knuckle punch is to the eyes or face, temple, throat, breast bone area and solar plexus; and the toe kick to strike it to the rib cage, abdomen or even to the face or throat when the opponent is downed.

"There is nothing new under the sun" :-) Ideally the nigiri game (gripping jar) weighs around 10kg only but is usually held with an "eagle's talon" style grip over the rim. This develops immensely strong grip, wrist, shoulder, lower arm and back strength. Moving slowly with short stances maintains correct muscle tension and develops strong focus as the weight of the jars alters your centre of gravity and forces you to compensate. They're amazing to train with :-)

The weight-carrying drills that the karateka demonstrate, between 3:48 and 4:51, remind me a bit of some of the kettlebell drills that I've done. In particular, the stepping drills shown at 4:17 or so, remind me of the "Famer's Walk" that I've done occasionally, where you walk a short distance with the heaviest weights possible, in order to relax your shoulders and build grip strength. I suspect that they're designed with the same principles in mind.

Exactly. I've never looked at karate as a means to "fight", it's always been an art form, and a form of self defense. Having used my Shotokan many times in real situations I can attest to the effectiveness, but having also boxed and done muay thai, unless you're on say, Lyoto Machidas level, traditional karate isn't really built for ring sports. If you want to use karate to fight, go take up Kyokushin, if not, then just enjoy the art and defend yourself with it should you ever have to :)

Combined strength and technique, my friend: no doubt when you're executing the stance correctly, and strong enough to do it consistently, the blows are easier to endure. And when you've FELT that difference, I'm sure it teaches you to get it right, awfully fast!

looks legit.. shinjo is said to have compeded in kyokushin like tournaments (full contact) there's only one footage of him knocking out a guy with a headkick...I really would like to see more of those...demonstrations are beautifull but they only show that much alltho this does not showcase the full potential of uechi ryu, it's interesting to see some of this Okinawans fight full contact, evin under limited rules

Because that's sport karate not real karate. Okinawan karate don't do sparring against other styles cause they dedicate years to the art and condition there body's to be weapons so they can protect there love ones. They don't do fights cause someone might get hurt bad.

It doesn't "always" lose in vs. muay thai, but some karate is not meant for sport. I'm really tired of this "well this style would kick this styles ass" debates people have. Not everyone trains for ring fights, and not every martial art is meant to be used as sport. For example, Pangi Noon (i think that's how you spell it) uses a LOT of open hand and grabbing techniques. If you put boxing gloves on them, they wouldn't do so well against a boxer would they? It's all relative.
@karatesloth
@karatesloth 11 жыл бұрын
That is the problem with modern karateka. Modern karateka train for sporting principles, moving fast, looking glamorous, showing how flashy they are with the movements. You don't have to harden the body because the amount of padding you have does most the work for you. That is not true karatedo, nor does it teach true self defence. Anyone who tells you that hardening the body and developing a resistance to pain isn't necessary is missing something fundamentally important with their practice.
