Amazing! Congratulations! A 6th Dan promotion in any art is a lifelong commitment. Great job...

I was a 1st kyu in Shotokan many years ago & wasn't long for Shodan, then this small Japanese sensei demonstrated at our dojo & I was blown away as my perception of what was the best got a a boost, I asked one of my mates who this guy was, he told me & within a week, I went over to his dojo & after seeing me in action for a few classes, he demoted me back down to 4th kyu & I went throught he brown belt stage again. That was the best move ever as thirteen years later, I left a Yodan because he was old school Japanese & ran me through the guantlet for all those years, it was tough because no quarter was given but it made me a better karateka today. The message is that if it's not hard, it's not worth taking the journey.

"One advice". I wish that was the normal for sensei and senpai. Too often so much advice that you just feel crushed, unable to perform w/o fear of doing one of the many, many things you have been advised to change. Let one be enough, until one is mastered. Then another one.

@hardykornfeld17332 ай бұрын
I wondered about that too. When I was tested for shodan and nidan in George Mattson’ Uechi-ryu dojo in Boston back in the 70s, kumite was part of the process. I since moved on to Yang style tai chi, but this well made and sincere video brought me back in time.

This wins the most ignorant comment award. Black belt gradings are multi faceted and he would've already done a heap of sparring/kumite tests in previous gradings. When getting to the higher dans, it's more about your knowledge of karate and fine tuning technique, not having full contact fights. Achieving anything difficult is never waste of time.

@@marekmaxpabianice....I left Gracie jiujitsu in the 90s, blue belt, after seeing my buddy, a purple belt, get jumped by a group of collegiate wrestlers (like how the Gracie brothers jumped Rufino Dos Santos) and while my Gracie purple belt buddy was choking one and I was fighting off others some kicked & stomped his head putting him into ICU. I quit Gracie BJJ after that and trained other arts that are more mobile for defending against multiple unarmed attackers. BJJ is good for escaping the ground if taken down, so is wrestling, and good for arrest & control one person but otherwise for self defense it's not practical when most assaults happen to men involve multiple attackers.

@yxx_chris_xxy6 ай бұрын
Not meaning to be harsh, but you speak with no insight into the discipline. The kata Sanchin looks strange and unnatural to you because it is particularly focused on pracitising a particular breathing technique, and Uechi ryu goes to particular extremes here. This gentleman has done this kata thousands of times before and he is far beyond the beginner level where one memorizes and replays movements without understanding. Even the "attacks" by the partner are not a toughness test but are supposed to help perfect the breathing and muscle contraction/relaxation cycles in the presence of distractions.
