OKINAWA KARATE Old footage 2 This is a very valuable material that Tamotsu Miyahira sensei received from Kou Uehara sensei of Okinawa Goju-ryu. 宮平保先生が沖縄剛柔流・上原恒先生より頂いた沖縄空手のとても貴重な資料です。
All from White Crane! After the terrible devastation of World War 2 many Okinawan Masters came to study and learn Bunkai from the many White Crane Systems’ Masters still alive in Taiwan. I know as I saw this first hand, face-to-face in the 1970’’s

After WW2? How did this even come about? What would make karatekas go seek out White Crane masters considering how they treated china during the war? What caused those masters to even accept japanese students?

@@Xannyphantom905 Taiwan was a Japanese colony for 50 years. 1895-1945. For the most part, Japanese treated the Taiwanese ok. Traditional Chinese arts and weapons were banned by the Japanese. But the Taiwanese still trained underground. Both Okinawa and Taiwan were conquered and occupied by Japan. The Okinawans trained underground secretly at night as well. And their kata were designed to hide things. Both were trading partners especially when it came to the highly prized Taiwan Oolong Teas. Okinawa te practitioners went to China BEFORE WWII. Okinawans went to Taiwan in the late 1890’s til the 1930’s. During this time, 1880-1911 going to China was dangerous because of the political upheaval of the Han Chinese against the Manchurian Ching Dynasty. That was followed by the warlord era, then finally the establishment of Dr. SUN YAT SEN’s REPUBLIC OF CHINA. Both Taiwan and Okinawa were safe because they were both part of Japan at the time. So the Okinawans came to learn ( quietly). White Crane and other forms of Shaolin have existed on Taiwan since the 1600’s. As had the ENTIRE Taoist Canon. Martial arts Masters, Monks, Taoist priests-who ever was politically active and persude by the Ching Dynasty would escape to Taiwan which is 2/3 Mountainous and easy to hide. So, there’s been all sorts of culture here. After the conclusion of the War, and the closing off of Mainland China due to communism, and many Mainland Masters fleeing to Taiwan Many Okinawans came here to Taiwan to try to put back together their systems lost information. Okinawans have always been welcomed and liked here. The mainland Japanese not so much. Americans have almost always been loved here as best friends. It was only after the opening of Communist China in the late 70’s early 80’s did MA researchers begin going their. They found many changes such as the dramatic flamboyant new Kung Fu promoted by the government their for competition ( rather than fighting/self defense) called “ Wu Shu”. Other terms preferred by old style practitioners in Taiwan were ;” Wu Kong ( martial skill), and Kuo Shu ( our National Arts). Hope this helps! I’ve lived here 44 years now and still in love with the Beautiful Country and People of Taiwan ROC!

@@DrMARDOC I understand the karatekas going to china before WW2. It still leaves me with questions. If Taiwan was a japanese colony and banned Chinese forms of combat, what led to the japanese learning it anyway? Even if quietly?
@DrMARDOC3 жыл бұрын
@@Xannyphantom905 because it wasn’t the Japanese learning it on Taiwan. They would never teach the Japanese. It was the Okinawans. Don’t lump them together. Okinawa had its own separate history, King, culture and language and was once a Chinese protectorate in the Ming And Ching Dynasties before the Japanese Satsuma invasion of Okinawa.
Looks very like Southern Mantis. Example Tong Long Jow ga.

Is that Karate Sensei from Shorin Ryu Kyudokan? I recognize both kata: Passai dai and Unsu, but the latter is different from what is currently practiced.
