The state of Assam is located in northeastern India, with the eastern Himalayas along the flowing river valleys to the north.
The area of the state is 78,438 square km. It has Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh to its north; Manipur and Nagaland to its east; Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Bangladesh to the south; and West Bengal to the west.
According to the census of 2011, the total population of Assam was 31.16 crore. Assam state is well known for its superior quality tea and silk.

Population of Assam
The population of Assam consists of minorities as well as the majority.
The Hindu population is around three-fifths of the total population and thus forms the majority in Assam. Hindus in Assam follow Vaishnavism, which worships the deity, Lord Vishnu.
One-third of the population belongs to the religion Islam, of which most Muslims are the emigrants from Bangladesh or the poor Hindus converted to Islam.
Scheduled Tribes are the rural indigenous people who fall outside the Indian caste system. These tribes form the significant minority population of Assam, of which the Bodo tribe has a remarkable population. Most Scheduled Tribes live in the south-central hill region and are of Asiatic descent.
Assamese, an Indo-Aryan language, is the state’s official and principal language.
Assam State has its own anthem.
Assam state has its own anthem, to the surprise of everyone. The state officially adopted this anthem as its state song at the Assam Student Conference held in Tezpur in 1927.
Assamese poet, novelist, and playwright of modern Assamese literature, Lakshminath Bezbaroa, was the person to write the anthem. The anthem is called “O Mur Apunar Dex”, which means “O my dearest country”.
It makes Assam a unique state from all the other states since no state has its own anthem.
