Ask anyone about the 2013 tornado season in Oklahoma and almost everyone you talk to will mention the Moore EF-5 or the El Reno 2.6 mile wide monster.
But the day that was the most prolific strong/violent tornado producer of the year in the state actually occurred before both of these days on May 19, 2013. In this video, I'll walk you through how this outbreak took shape and our views of these monster tornadoes.

Enjoy the videos and the education that comes with it. Really appreciate the work you put into it. Im a North Texas resident, that's only about 4 months into a new found tornado fascination. Hope to get up into Oklahoma this coming season and see a few of these in person. At least at a reasonable distance, dont want to get caught up in a traffic jam of storm chasers.

100% for sure be safe! But likely..I'm also sorry because this will get addicting fast! There's plenty of tornadoes in North Texas as well, every season is completely different so you never know where things line up.

I have to say. I've been fascinated by weather, especially storms, since childhood. I live in a part of Canada where extreme weather is almost unheard of (tho it's changing) and I follow a lot of weather channels. Discovered yours today, instantly subbed. But also, reading the description, that this channel is fronted by an openly trans woman is giving me life. From one trans person to another, I'm glad to support your team, even if I can only offer views, likes and comments. We matter, we are important, we are making a difference.

Thank you for the support, glad you're enjoying the channel! Weather is the coolest and it’s literally for everyone. Unless you live underground 24/7/365 but I have concerns if that is the case ha!

Hello, and hell yea. I never really cared, but wondered. And still don’t care. I support you both. But I too love weather, and was afraid as a kid.

I actually KNOW what you mean by "hodographs", too! If you DON'T want to see a tornado, then you DON'T want to see that there's a sickle-shaped hodograph over your area! A hodograph of that shape just screams, *"TORNADO!"* I believe that the hodograph for the Tuscaloosa, Alabama Tornado in 2011 was literally off the charts!

Well done, really enjoyed watching this. Some of your footage was great. The temptation is to always get closer, but I'd rather zoom in from a safe distance. 👍👍👍

I like close views if I can get it (more detail in the funnel, etc.) but I am also a big believer in doing that with safety in mind. It is definitely possible to get close safely, but it takes a lot of skill to know when those opportunities exist or not ha!

Thanks so much for watching! This definitely was a day a lot of people who didn’t chase it remember, but it was by far the best chase day of 2013 in Oklahoma.

A very good analysis of this outbreak and how it occurred. And some very good pics and footage too. Closer isn't always better for filming; too close and you lose the big picture which can be far more interesting and stunning to watch.

I agree! It’s a balance for sure. I think there's a middle ground between smart approaches and being at a good distance for a long-lasting tripod shot. I'm a fan of both which means any day is a grab bag of improvisation when it comes to chase strategy ha

Great case study yall were definitely the right place right time. Always a bit of a gamble but you made the right decisions. Be interesting to see why May 2013 was such an incredible tornado month for Oklahoma

2013 is best summed up in the following timeline: “I can’t wait for storm season to start!” “It’s going to start anytime now” “Ok this might be the worst chase season ever” “OMG” “HOLY TOLEDO” “WTH this is every day” “Wow, guess the season is done now”

I remember the Shawnee, Oklahoma EF4 Tornado it was given the rating EF4 despite its windspeed not being measured. It is likely due to the damage survey team being diverted to the following day voilent torando!
@TornadoTitans
@TornadoTitans 3 ай бұрын
They had time with this one and the day after. The damage in Bethel Acres was pretty high end but there wasn’t enough evidence of EF-5 to make the higher, though it was an incredibly powerful tornado either way!

At least two other wind-related phenomena can produce that low-pitched roar: an exceptionally violent derecho (like the August 10, 2020 Derecho that struck Cedar Rapids, Iowa with 140-mph wind gusts) and a Category 4+ hurricane.
@TornadoTitans
@TornadoTitans 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I've heard a similar effect with hail as well on the high plains (hail roar). But it doesn't fully compare because, with tornadoes, there's a bit of a whistle to it as well, which is hard to describe until you experience it. I call it a waterfall but that isn't even fully it.

Sometime can you talk more about wind shear and how it impacts tornado genesis vs hurricane intensification? Thanks! Love the videos 👍🏻👍🏻
@TornadoTitans
@TornadoTitans 3 ай бұрын
Honestly, I'm not a hurricane expert so I wouldn't be very authoritative. But generally, hurricanes get sheared apart by jet stream winds because they rely on calmer conditions to organize but you get supercells/tornadoes in the outer bands of hurricanes all the time because of how the winds are organized on the smaller scale. On a finer scale, think about it as if the delicate balance of what is needed for tornado formation is messed up by overwhelming outflow undercutting the wall cloud. It's not the same but it is in the sense that the wind pattern has to be near-perfect for big things to happen.

@@TornadoTitans Thanks so much for the informative response. I’d been meaning to pose the question for some time but it came to the forefront with Hurricane Milton - the fact that wind shear was forecast to be detrimental to its strength whereas it’s among the necessary elements for tornado genesis. Thanks again! 👍🏻👍🏻
