I think they're both positively nasty to each other. I much prefer Gene Nelson's Will and Gloria Grahame's Annie in the 1955 film version. They're playfully bantering with each other for the most part, and it's absolutely delightful.

@amadeusamwater4 жыл бұрын
Things to note: This is the stage version, anyone appearing in a stage musical better be good at singing, loud and strong. Will Parker had better be aggressive, since cowboys and farmers didn't get along and he's courting a farmer's daughter. This version of Annie is closer to the ideal, an excitable and oversexed 16-year-old. Plus Gloria Grahame was not a good singer.

Best cast!!! The movie is lacking so much passion compared to this!
@StrongRex4 жыл бұрын
I agree the movie is lacking in the case of Ado Annie, but not the rest of the cast. I liked Curly and Jud in this, but I didn't care for Will or Aunt Eller. Ali Hakim annoyed me. I could not stand Laurey - I thought making her a tomboy and dressing her in pants was a terrible idea. Plus, the actress just gave a really cold, hostile performance and that's not Laurey's character at all.
@lc1715 Жыл бұрын
How is this the best cast? The accents are so off lol. The film has to feel a bit smaller because it's not on the stage.
@StrongRex4 жыл бұрын
I definitely prefer Gene Nelson's performance, he will always be Will to me. I didn't care for this actor's portrayal. But man, Ado Annie is so much better here! The actress's performance just makes much more sense. The instrumental portion is definitely better in the movie than here.
@tamolyn51414 жыл бұрын
I prefer Nelson's performance too. What I don't like about this Will and Annie is that they're both so nasty to each other. This duet should be fun and playful, not vicious.
@Theater00jock7 ай бұрын
100% agree. I think Gene Nelson plays Will as disarming and not actually a ladies man, which is what makes this song fun. Like he is not giving up "lots of things a gentleman never mentions" he didn't have those things! Like Annie is ACTUALLY sexually adventurous, and Will is PRETENDING. I feel like this actor portrays Will as just as oversexed as Annie and as quite aggressive towards her, which makes him almost sinister? But her performance is incredible. I mean I don't fault him for it, I think he does a good job at portraying the character, I just don't like his portrayal that much.
