As someone who loves the countertenor voice in baroque opera, I feel guilty. Not because modern countertenors get castrated-they don’t-but because I have often wished we I could listen to a castrato. They had the gorgeous countertenor timbre but could use their full lung power. Many of them were huge stars so they may have not minded the price they paid.

the real history of this is so sad. it mainly came about because they didn't want women singing so boys would be castrated to preserve the voice. SOmetimes they were orphans, sometimes parents offered their sons (from poor families). this practice went on for 500 years! Some castrati were superstars especially in the Baroque period (Farinelli was one of them)
