English ivy is very invasive and it can kill trees when it climbs.

I doesn't kill the tree roots so if you just keep it trimmed at your comfortable height level it's not a problem. It's only when the ivy grows up into the tree branches and gets thick enough to shade out the tree leaves. But you're right, it is invasive and has to be trimmed, edged at least once a year.

Instead of Roundup, if cut a sapling or trunk at the ground, I chew up the top of it with a drill and pour salt into it. Careful not to spread it around to kill the roots of the ground cover. This is very effective but might take more than one application depending on how much salt you can get into the root system.

I also use nitrogen powder to promote rot on unwanted little trees, drill holes in the plant and mix powder into a paste by adding water (use gloves and mask) apply to the cracks and holes or anywhere that grabs, every 3 months until it’s so rotten it will crumble and pull out. Great for large tree stumps and an alternative to round up.

Can you recommend a product? I googled nitrogen powder and got a wide variety of types.

Thank you. I have prepared a small jar for getting rid of elm seedlings growing in my flower garden. Wonderful idea.

Note: roundup stays active in the soil for 6-10 months, be careful putting it near any fruit trees or edibles.

It would be great to put the Tree seedlings In Pots to sell or give to Forest regeneration groups and projects 😊 Thank you for your time and knowledge 😊

Can you recommend a ground cover that I can put in my flower garden that won’t strangle or over take my flowers?

There is a ground cover that is so thick it chokes weeds out it gets waist high but one draw back it runs the ground cover is Pleoblastus fourentii variegata I'm not sure if its spelled right?!?! It's a dwarf running mostly evergreen bamboo with lots of white in the leaves. Mine has only frozen to the ground a couple times all you do is shear it to the ground and it'll return when it warms up. Its aggressive as with most running bamboos but theres a dwarf yellow bamboo that is much worse plus it dosent choke out weeds. So if you got the room research Pleoblastus fourentii variegata I high recommend it and I wasn't joking it chokes weeds out when it gets going its highly attractive as well!

I have Creeping Jasmine under my Live Oak. The biggest problem is leaves and no way to remove them when they get down into the lower part of the cover.

This is a great illustration of the problem -- killing the native plants to preserve the invasive non-native plants. That Virginia Creeper and Mulberry... both native and both working hard to sustain the local food web. The periwinkle and english ivy.... horribly invasive and an ecological black hole that not only doesn't support the local ecosystem, but actively damages it. Sure, the vid is 8 years old, but it shows just how long the problem has been around.
