A costume designer is like an author who weaves a story with threads instead of words. They study the time period in which the characters find themselves and selects the right colors and materials to make the outfits really “pop” on camera. They draw hundreds of sketches. They help the actors transform into heroes, and of course, they cut, trim, and sew miles and miles of fabric. Here are the top fifteen best costume designers according to Okolo Kino.
In this episode, we're going to talk about the greatest outfits in cinematic history and the people who made them. If you love “Fight Club”, “The Great Gatsby”, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, or “The Wizard of Oz”, you are sure to find plenty of fascinating information in this video.

British Authorities did not prevent A Clockwork Orange being screened. It was Kubrick who requested it be removed from being screened by Warner Bros, due to the fact that him and his family were getting death threats due to the film.

Any of our movies require many months of production, which includes investigation, script writing, translating it to English (because the main author is from Ukraine), record the voice over, a recopilation of huge amount of vide materials which shall be watched, edit all these video to attractive video secuence, etc., etc., etc. If after all this work, there are some mistakes, you are who can tell it in the comments. We did what we could. We appreciate corrections, but you also may understand that we are just a few persons in the team and we can make mistakes. In the other hand, YT doesn't allow to change parts of video, just remove them.

Hi! Thank you very much for caring. The authors Ievgen and Daria still in Kyiv and are ok, but have serious problems with the access to the internet because of constant electricity cuts due Russian attacks to their electrical central stations. It's hard to work under this circumstances but they are very strong and brave.

I worked as a costumer in the entertainment business for over twenty years. Edith Head may have won eight Oscar’s for Best Costume Design, but you need to ask, “Did she deserve them?”. I think you touched upon the controversy in your documentary but the full scoop is not revealed. She had secured two studio contracts throughout her career. Paramount and Universal. This allowed her to claim bragging rights over all the shows at those studios. Hence, the astronomical nominations. Head is known to have stolen credit for designs. I applaud Hepburn for demanding Givenchy provide her costumes for “Sabrina”. Yet Edith coveted the Oscar solely to herself. In addition, Head’s widely known for her glamour designs. If she worked in today’s entertainment scene, Ms. Head would not have won eight Oscar’s; the competition is far superior! To me, the most talented costume designer should have the capability to create outstanding pieces in all genres: historical, contemporary, futuristic and fantasy. Particularly the last two categories because an individual needs to design in an imaginative stratosphere to produce wondrous and believable costumes. I believe that Colleen Atwood and Sandy Powell should occupy the top position. Mary Zophres had her “La La Land” collection on display just prior to the Academy Awards where she had secured a nomination for that film. The workmanship on those costumes looked so amateur, even the employees guarding the displays snickered at the poor quality. In your closing credits, Deborah L. Scott is listed as an honorable mention. I worked with her on Titanic. When shipping her research material back to the United States, one book fell open upon her desk. It is an exact replica, line for line, of Kate Winslet’s outfit as she’s boarding the ship! There are numerous other accusations where Scott took unapologetic liberties at stealing designs. However, unless you are a crew member who is entrenched in the industry, I understand why egregious indiscretions remain hidden. Otherwise, thank you for producing such an excellent documentary; oftentimes costumes are not given enough attention when compared to the other crafts needed to create “movie magic!”

Thanks for the detailed comment. If I were to make this video now, I'd definitely consult with people from the film industry or at least give it a try. Unfortunately, in the past, I didn't have any connections in the movie industry, so I had to do all the research on my own. Considering I'm not a costume designer and never had access to the industry apart from documentaries and articles, the video turned out a bit superficial and, let's say, popcorny. But on the flip side, thanks to it, I learned an incredibly interesting facts and learn new even now from you! Thanks again! :)

YOUR CONTENT & FILMS ARE AMAZING…… I have just started binge watching ur Videos….they are so pleasant to digest & they quench the thirst for absorbing quality content , tht is rarely provided by KZbinrs etc. YOUR breakdowns ARE 😘 LOL …. U have amazing videos , not only are these highly detailed , in-depth, & thorough……but you also use an intuition & ability to connect pieces of the puzzle that aren’t things tht can be found through sound research alone but research done with a certain talent & skill is required to break it down like u have done in most videos I’ve seen

God I love your channel. I have an Idea, and I know it's a long shot, but I just have to ask. Will you ever do one of these Documentaries on Peter Jackson? Going from making miniatures and doing low budget films such as *Bad Taste*, to casting Kate Winslets first film *Heavenly Creatures*. To making *The Frightners*, which would eventually be what proved he could make *Lord of the Rings* to the big studios in terms of CGI. Then to actually MAKING *Lord of the Rings*, and ending up remaking his favorite film *King Kong*. Onto *The Lovely Bones*, and the struggles of making *The Hobbit*, and the INCREDIBLE restoration of World War footage in his Documentary *They Shall Not Grow Old*, to the installment in his incredible career, his *The Beatles* documentary on the band. Like I said I know it's a long shot you'll do this or even read this, but I think this would be nothing but spectacular to watch. An Incredible 3 part series just like your Tarantino series. Or perhaps two long 2 or 3 hour videos, just like your Scorsese Series. Love your work man! 👍

Great Video. I was wondering though why it's so hollywood centric. Every Artist worked or was most known through their hollywood work. Was it because the mos prolific costume designers went to hollywood or is it the oscar phenomenon (Hollywood being so popular that other places aren't really looked at)?

Let's adress the innevitable elephant in the room. Nobody complains about the lack of men in costume design, because... why would we? As true professionals we want the best for the job regardless the sex of that person. Reasonable people understand that certain jobs attract certain people; in the case of direction; men, in the case of costume design; women. Even the wokest activists know that’s a natural fact, but they won't mention anything that brings attention to lack of male "Inclusion" in female dominated jobs, because that destroys their narrative that gives them privileges, and they don't want to use their own "Inclusion" laws to favor the inclusion of straight white men in anything. Female dominated jobs, that's where they don't want that 50-50. So, should we go back to the inherit fairness in Meritocracy? Remember, Meritocracy is what put more women in the costume design department than men, after all.
