The movie that really made me love the visual was "He Walked by Night" - John Altman. The idea that he closely studied Rembrandt's use of light and shadow, then directly applied it to lower budget crime movies totally grabbed me. This channel now has 2 of my favorite uploads on KZbin.

this is so incredibly well done, hard to express in words. forever thankful for creating this and all the other documentaries on your channel. and thanks for being out there being part of a dying species consisting of people who are still interested in film and all the finesses that lie in the background and the process of making a film.

Gregg Toland would have deserved at least an honorary mention though.. :/ (I'm Hungarian, was happy for Vilmos Zsigmond's "mention", but please! One is great, but the other made a blast in/to cinematography history, saved to the Library of Congress/ Natonal Film Reserve.)

I think my three favourite DoPs have to be Robert Richardson, Roger Deakins and Tonino Delli Colli (who shot The Good The Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon A Time In America among others). Colli shot some of the most beautiful shots in film in history in my opinion and he’s criminally underrated, by which I mean, no one seems to really talk about him despite shooting some of the most iconic shots ever.

Overall a great video👍🏻 but I can imagine that the frequent use of the word "operator" could be more than confusing to a lot of people, since, for anybody that knows a thing or two about cinematography, "DP/cinematographer" and "camera operator" have very different meanings and are less interchangeable than this video unintentionally suggests.

Great channel got suggested by a friend of mine. I should have added Christopher doyle I know there is a lot of talented cinematographers so it's very hard to make a list. I consider doyle as one of the greatest eyes behind a camera. His collaboration with wong kar wai is pure art. It feels like each shots have life and it tells a whole story itself. Anyway great video so many of my favorite filmmakers are already on the list

Just had to jump in …Listing great cinematographers is a daunting task. Ive seen a lot. You will always miss someone who deserves a mention. Some of the greats never get mentioned because very few have seen their work. More often non English speaking countries don’t get the kudos they deserve in terms of cinematographers. BTW Hoyte is Dutch not Swiss.

There is an underlying problem with the presses made for this video. A very deep problem. If it is true that the work of directors of photography is damned eclipsed by the great names of directors and actors, and therefore it is right to remember the importance of their work and their immense work, it is also true that you are confusing things, and that is, one thing is taken for granted, which is summed up in this principle formula: if professionals are unfairly undervalued or poorly remembered, it does not mean that their value in itself, is superior or even just on par with those who put them or put them in the shade. Here the error is gross, and not a little. And this too can be summed up in an explanatory formula which clarifies why, however, directors of photography will never, ever be able to claim to outclass authors and actors in the final results, or even just be equal, since success is descended from authors and actors, and the formula is this: - The best director of photography can never make it to a final product of the highest level without a director and extraordinary or brilliant actors; while, conversely, even with mediocre cinematographer, persono poor, still you can get monstrously fabulous and successful end results. This video is absolutely wrong. If the Director has the actors up to scratch and he is a high-level professional, he can still achieve great results;conversely, he can not do. End of story. The rest is bullshit. There is nothing wrong, it is simply the nature of things. Van Gogh could have the worst colors in his hands, but any of his paintings would still be brilliant. Not vice versa. And it doesn't end there. To show that what I say is objective, it is enough to know that in any case the photograph, the angle of shooting, the light, the backcground, all kinds of lighting, the choice of film, the dominants and who can have more, if it is true that it is a deputed thing to do to the director of photography, it is equally true that everything depends on the result that the director wants to obtain and not the director of photography, whose magnificence, god forbid, is in his ability to be a magnificent performer, but always the performer remains. Not only that, another icing on the cake: if someone objects, as is known, that many directors of photography (especially at Hollood In any case, even the best atmsofere or the best results of lighting and composition and continuity, are still results to which the director of photography must reach according to the tastes, preferences and final artistic sensibilities of the director, period. No use making up bullshit. If in the world of cinema it is the directors and actors who remain the most in the spotlight, there is a reason. It is directors and actors who hold the real reason for the final result. This does not mean that all professionals should not be appreciated, on the contrary!, from costume designers, electricians, stunt-men, set designers, executive producers, publishing secretaries, dialogists, screenwriters, of course, but they are the arms and legs. The director is the mind and becomes the transcendent mind of the work and the actors are the soul of the director, and it is right and natural that they are the most remembered.
