Also used in a lot of cajun recipes. Slice and cook with onions, bacon drippings, garlic, canned diced tomatoes and sliced sausage. Serve over rice with a pan of cornbread-heaven!

You have such a beautiful garden! I live in N Phoenix and started container gardening about 4 years ago and I must admit the struggle has been real!!! I was so happy to find someone who understands the unique problems we face here like excessive heat, abnormal seasons, varieties and planting times vs the rest of the U.S. so thank you. Your garden is so lush and green, would love to have one like that but don't think I am ready for the water bill lol.

I’ve been eating fried okra for 65 yrs. But the last few I’ve been growing and cooking it in unusual ways. I grill whole pods on gas grill. Large pods, I scrape the seeds out and fry or boil the seeds only. They are delish. I cook cut pieces with green bean, black eyed peas, or butter peas. I grew cow horn okra this year. It is less slimy and starts getting tough about 4 or 5 inches. Clemson gets tough smaller but tastes a little better. Thanks for your work.

I LOVE okra!! My grandmother taught me how to cook it in bacon grease, flour and cornmeal. Soooo, delicious! Then she instructed me on how to grow and when to harvest, otherwise too long and they will be tough!😊

I'm in Tennessee - zone 6b/7a. This is my first year growing Okra and I've good luck, at least I think so for my first year, especially since the deer went through and 'pruned' for me. Thankfully the plants regrew. It's so fun to go out and pick the Okra. Have to remember not to let them get too big, though. I did that with the first picking. WOW - wish I'd known about Okra water then, however now I do and will definitely use it. Okra iced tea on a hot summer's day. I'm thinking about using that with my Lemon Balm and/or other herbs for a green drink. This morning, I added it with some cherry tomatoes from my garden in with my scrambled eggs - YUM. Love your videos! They're always full of great information.

Loved this video on Okra. I was born and grew up in Mississippi. Okra was a staple for us. Fried, gumbo, or just boiled with butter...that may be an acquired taste, but I love it. I now live in the Mesa East Stake just down the street from you. I have about 12 okra plants growing now and hope they do well.

Easy to grow, drought tolerant and …… delicious. Oh Angela, we agree on 2 out of 3. 🙂 That was before this video. You (grandmas are always spot on) have opened our eyes and we will give it another try. We grew it this summer and are amazed of how it thrives in the heat. So, we have the front end covered and just need to tighten up on the harvest and cooking. Thanks for the tips. Never thought to trim it back. Can’t wait for the heat of next summer and eating fresh okra. Hold on, did I just say that?? Thanks!

I started growing okra this spring on your suggestion! so far I've only harvested 2 pods. the first one was pretty tasty raw & i can imagine it'd be delicious fried! i think i let the second one get too big cuz it was not as pleasant raw & a lot slimier, next time I'll try making okra water! Can't wait until I get enough to fry them up.

One of my favorite videos of yours, I'm growing okra for the first time and it finally is producing and the plants are filling out. I've never cared for okra but I thought I'd give it a new try when I was gifted seeds. :) Thanks for the tips about how to cook it to avoid slime and how to freeze it. I do wonder if okra can be dehydrated and if so, how to rehydrate and use it, make in soups?

Thanks. I plan to try growing okra next year. This summer, Egyptian spinach from the okra family, was the star of my Phoenix area garden. It has a much milder taste than Malabar spinach that I also grow during the summer here.

First year into gardening, the first successful harvest has been okra this year so far. my squash, tomatoes, beans … dint produce anything or died during the summer. A few questions, I have one bed and I’m trying to fit in all the plants there : 1. Do we need to chop off all the plants when they’re done producing? 2. Will they start producing fruits back in spring if I leave them? 3. Can I plant something else in the same place once chopped off ? 4. Can you pls share how to use same bed throughout the year in each season for different varieties ?
@GrowingInTheGardenАй бұрын
I'm posting a video tomorrow that should be helpful. Yes chop crops at the end of the season and replant next spring. Yes you can plant around it.

Feels so wrong and unfair to be clubbed with your beautiful warm weather. I'm in zone 8 too, but in the Pacific Northwest. We had a total of 3 days above 80F and 1 night that stayed above 60F this "summer." Yet, we hope, we believe, we garden here ...and check out okra growing tips! 😅

Solarizing can help. Another option is to till every couple of days for a week or two to expose them to the sun. Then more or less start over with the soil. (Add fresh compost and castings and perlite or vermiculite and plant a quick cover crop)

I've had no luck growing okra the last couple of years :( . I'm in the SF bay area (zone 10a); could it be that I'm just not getting hot enough temps for long enough for the okra to thrive? I also don't know what variety I have (the packet just says "okra" and nothing else); could trying with a different variety be the key?
