Thanks for the video. I wish I had seen this video before tackling an Okuma Coronado with elliptical gear out of curiosity. After assembly, it kept binding at one spot. I kept relocating the main gear till it worked smooth. Finally, I saw the opening on the main gear. I did not see or look for the X on the oval gear. It looked like if the hole on the main gear was north (toward the reel seat, then the flat part of the oval gear was facing west. Works great as before.

Glad it was helpful! There are a few manufacturers that use this technology and you are right, if you are not looking for it, it can get maddening. Shimano also uses reference marks on some of their reels - Thanks for the note - Dennis

I have a friends little Okuma Avenger AV30a which I coincidently just did a quick service on and it has a rubber seal under the drag knob. I was surprised. Not a bad little egg beater.

These are good reel at a nice price point. The rubber seal helps keep water off the drags. Thanks for watching - Dennis

I don't have one in the shop right now. I will add this to my request list and do a video when one is available. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Never seen an elliptical crosswind gear before. Fascinating reel but too modern for me. None of my vintage surf spinning reels have that green on the housing screws. I hope that “or a woman” comment doesn’t come back to bite you. LOL If I was going to buy a modern spinning reel from what I have been researching I would look at the Tsunami reels. Since I’m not going to buy one it really doesn’t matter. Great video Dennis. I’ve seen my first elliptical crosswind gear!

The idea of the elliptical gear is to distribute the stress of the up and down stroke evenly and to make the reel turn smoother. I like the design. Tsunami is a nice reel. The company started out making lures and then added reels to their line up. They purchased Jarvis Walker from Penn International and then started releasing reels. The early ones were budget entries, but the new ones are competitive higher end models. They are part of Bimini Bay Outfitters and are located in New Jersey - Best wishes Chris - Dennis
