Okuma Makaira Rods

The popping rods....I used them in Cape Cod for bluefin tuna....they are the real deal. I mean, we were landing 150 pound fish in less than 15 minutes.. Yes, we were using heavy drag (20-30 pounds) and using 60-80 pound hollow core braid. I beat up a lot of gear (charter captain) and these rods are awesome. And for about 220 bucks...it's a great deal.

Hello. I am looking for goliath grouper rod . To fish from the surface . Which okuma makaira rod can you reccomend ? And also what is the okuma makaira surgeon rod ?

If there were one, it would probably be one of the heavy trolling rods. But, even then it would not be my top recommendation given construction materials used. You are not going to catch those fish on the surface, though the water where they are found may be fairly shallow. YOu need a reliable stump pulling kind of rod for this application. Closest match would be from their PCH series rods, which are newer and follow United Composite's lead with the Rail Rod format. UC best, Okuma PCH a less expensive version, not same action nor construction, but it might get the job done and certainly would be better suited than the Makaira series rods.

@@KirillShatskiy - Check our website: www.charkbait.com where you will find more info on UC - United Composites. Rollers can be of benefit in safely handling line which is moving back and forth and could create heat/friction and thus cause problems. You mentioned surface fishing, and in that mode it's less an issue, also species (it's not like fighting a tuna at a distance). So, I'd suggest the use of rollers is subjective and different folks will make use of 'em or avoid 'em. Are you Russian? So is my wife, from Crimea, who also works here at CharkBait as does my son who can help explain differences in rod design...in Russian or English. Feel free to give us a call when we're open (not now it's Sunday and I'm just knocking out some time on computer).

@@CharkBaitUSA Yes you are right . I am from Russia . My friend lives in Florida and he has his personal boat . (It will be my first experience ) . So we can go offshore fishing , but also we want to trie surface fishing . And I want to take my Shimano tiagra , but I don't have a rod for this thing . And now I am thinking of buying PCH for the surface fishing and makaira for the boat.

@@KirillShatskiy Good plan, also you may want to check the rest of the PCH series as alternative to the Makaira series. The Makaira series rods cosmetically are very impressive and are good rods, but by design I feel the PCH's are better rods since they have incorporated some aspects of UC's designs.

Surf fishing in SoCal is a light line sport 4-6lb most successful with 8-9' most common lengths for rods for this application. We have access to longer and heavier action rods from our suppliers, can source most things, but we don't inventory much in the longer reaching rods at present.

Order a 14.6 or 15ft okuma makaira rod. They come also standard with the bionic finger so you don't cut yourself with the braid when casting.

Will the reel seat be metal to metal on my reel? I don't want to scratch the paint off my saltiga. Any suggestions?

+CaptainVictor Your Saltiga is not painted, it's anodized and the process should not result in a scratch from simply being used with a metal reel seat.

Missed this one... Long story, short version - I have not bothered with them since 2005. Did not like their restraint of competition and marketing practices. I'm a free market supply/demand sort of guy. As you can note from our website I pass along our efficiencies of operation to our clients. Value added promotions (like free braid rigging) are on my dime, however that particular manufacturer took issue and played games with us. CB is a privately owned firm, I'd rather support manufacturers who respect a dealer's right to compete without the games those folks played.
