My input for a great single song for improving metal technique up to advanced playing levels would be Metallica Fade to black…. Beginner level rhythm and leads. Great clean rhythm for introducing finger picking. Introduction to gallop rhythms. And that outro solo, triplets, speed picking, tremolo picking. Proof Kirk doesn’t have to use a wah to go big.

I just got my first Solar 7 string the other day and LOVE IT!!! But I've been transitioning from 6 to 7 string for a while now. I like the view the 7 string as 2 guitars in 1. A standard tuned 6 string below, and a drop tuned 6 string above. Depending which perspective you're viewing the guitar from the extra string is either another high for more coloured clean chords or leads, or another low to add octaves or 5ths below power chords.

My Solar A.1 6 BOP, came tuned to D standard, all the way from Spain & thanks to the Evertune bridge didn't even need a tweak before I plugged it in! Needless to say - it's my main Axe now! For 1991 metal, Sepultura - Arise was a favorite. I had to do some searching to see if it was "the" favorite. In the same year, there was: - Mr Bungle - (Self Titled) - Overkill - Horrorscope - Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power - Death - Human the "not quite metal" albums - Nirvana - Nevermind - Faith no More - Angle Dust - Sound Garden - Badmotorfinger - Infectious Grooves - The Plague ... and the not metal at all - Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic It was a great year for diverse music. Mr Bungle still tops my list, even though they just ripped off Cardiacs and the clown motif (see R.E.S. and Tarred and Feathered).

I've been playing for around 16 years and switched to 7 string nearly 2 years ago. I love it, it's almost like having 2 guitars in one. The best advice I got was to ignore the low 7th string for about a week and just play it like a normal guitar. It seems to have helped me a lot, got used to the feel of the wider neck as well as learned to play around that low string without it interfering. Now when I pick up a 6 string the neck feels like a toothpick lol.

The trick to getting comfortable on 7 string is to learn your intervals if you haven't already, and also tune it to Drop A. That way it feels like a drop D or C guitar but you have Aminor shapes that you are familiar with.

I found the best way to play a 7 string is to tune it to b standard with a high E as opposed to E standard with a low b. You can do this simply by tuning the G to F#. It means you can play the lower 6 strings in the same way as you would a 6 string.
