Ola, thank you for carrying the torch in regards to dime's legacy and memory. He influenced a whole generation of guitarists, myself included. I think it's very important to pass on the energy and innovation that dime had to the next generation. He was both humble and down to earth, and a force to be reckoned with. R.I.P. Dime and Vinnie.

Those of us that are in our 40s really know how special Dime and Pantera was to our youth. They were our voice and we were proud! Now, like you, I’m a dad and doing my best to pass along the legacy of Dime and Pantera to my kids. Dime was a rock star that most of us could have never been able to keep up with but he was also a kind and faithful brother and friend to those he loved. CFH4L

I just look back at the 90’s and think “i can’t beleive i used to think the confederate flag wasnt about hate” i wish dime was still alive so he could be part of cancel culture and he would have smashed those guitars. Someday I’m going to paint a dime guitar with a pride flag just to make the whole world mad

Same here brother! In my 40’s and have kids. Dime and Pantera had a very profound effect on my youth and life in general. All of my children even know about Dime and Pantera very well. Like Ola, my house is covered in Dime guitars and memorabilia. I was able to meet Vinnie Paul in 2007 at the clubhouse in Dallas Texas. He was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. Man I miss the old days…

@@Ottophil Ummm, the confederate flag is not about hate. You must not live in the south. Also, Dime would have never smashed his rebel flag guitars or been a part of any cancel culture as you say. Dime would have been completely against all of that. You saying any of this shows me just how much you don’t know about Dime and southern roots.

Hey Ola, Genuinely love that you're keeping the Dimebag legacy alive. One question though, can you rule out that you or your business partner in Solar Guitars isn't behind the new 'Dimebag' guitar company in any way which is supposedly being released soon? You seem like the appropriate people to take over the licensed guitar shape, have the credibility, business model, know the contacts (Rita & Dime's former guitar tech) and respect of the product to make a new 'Dimebag' guitar series viable within a sub-niche for guitar players. Seems like a lot of very concentrated Dimebag material lately and the timing of it seems in line with a new company/product launch to generate interest in a new product.

Dimebag expressed his admiration for a fellow Texas band called King's X multiple times throughout his career. Aside from Van Halen and the usual suspects he always seemed greatly influenced by Ty Tabor and dug Pinnick's playing from KX. Have you yourself given them much of a listen? Do you have an opinion on them? It was crazy to me back in the day, I always thought king's X was super heavy, and discovered them separately from my trip down the rabbit hole with Pantera. They were my two favorite bands, and I remember being so stoked to find out that they were both fans of each other's work / friends.

Completely agree with you, kings'x is awesome! super heavy, totally badass! I always compared this two band, just the vocals is radically different.. but Ty Tabor got this type of groove and kiking riffs! "faith, hope, love" is a incredible album! Dimebag was totally fan, he told it in many interviews. Yep!

Bill Lawrence hand-made his pickups to order, so the ones made within his lifetime have quite a few variations. I had a pair in a Jackson, and that guitar was a beast because of it. I didn't need anything heavier than a light-gauge string on it because it was so naturally bottom-heavy and crunchy with the guitar/pup pairing.

@@russellzauner thanks! I’ve watched that clinic video about a dozen times! Not the clinic I was at back in the day. He did a tour of clinics throughout various music shops across the country that year. Still have my signed poster and guitar pick! It was such a cool way to meet Dime. There was maybe 40 people there, and he had two stacks “Dimed” in a very tiny space. He was the chillest musician I’ve ever met. Had conversations with everyone in attendance. Played for maybe 30-40 minutes but stuck around for nearly 2 hours afterwards talking.

The cool thing about Pantera is if you went to a Pantera show and you wanted to drink with the band, you did. Other bands were pretty cool but going to a Pantera show was like putting on a favorite comfortable old shirt that you and everyone else loved. The VIP list was just a list of people who were gonna prop open the back door for the rest of the party to wedge in there, wherever *there* happened to be at the time. Smoking weed and getting drunk after the FBD show in the back room at the Salem Armory will always be stuck in my mind. It's actually one of my longest and most entertaining stories since that was quite the couple of days - yeah, they rolled in the night before and Salem (Oregon, USA) just isn't that big of a town lol so basically the party started up then, gathering people, and nobody stopped until the day after the show :-D

Re: Razorbacks - I tried one once... it only solidified my decision to pick an ML or Stealth over it. Too pointy, might poke out a rib when sitting down or something. Re: Strings and Harmonics - I dunno about the pinch harmonics, but I find that Dime squeals are a bit harder to catch with thinner strings, at least the further up you go. Re: Dimebucker vs L500XL - I'm under the impression that the Dimebucker might be a bit more mid heavy and a tad peaksier than the L500XL. As far as Bill Lawrence USA, OBL and Wilde... OBL and Wilde (and Keystone as well, I think) are all Bill Lawrence the man himself, and if you ask me, I will always regard BL USA as the imposter. That Wajcman dude hasn't really done anything new, whereas Bill Lawrence himself continued to refine his products and create new ones, and that right there is the defining factor for me. Re: Tuning - I think Cowboys is actually 435Hz or something (though I have a fleeting suspicion that the record was sped up slightly during mastering). Then it's between 425Hz (Vulgar Display Of Power) and 427Hz (Reinventing The Steel), sometimes a tad lower. Re: Why This Tuning? - I think it chalked down to fitting Anselmo's voice, rather than the Abbotts being Van Halen fans. Of course then it sounded heavier and more feelsy at the same time, so Dime stuck with it :P Re: Backplate - I've taken it off on my Kelly as well, cus it doesn't have cutouts for a screwdiver like my ML does. But long story short, if I see that the tuning is off all across the strings (due to temperature swings, or going from a sitting to a standing position), I like to adjust the back screws first, and use the fine tuners for... well, finer settings :P I'd imagine something like that being the case here. Re: 5 hours and all Dime guitars - YES PLEASE!!!

My friend Mike knew Dime. Were from Shreveport, where Dime & VP met Phil for the first time after everybody here kept telling them about Phil every time they had a show here leading up to this. This is also where they had the first live show with Phil. 🤘 But yea, my buddy knew Dime. He's got all sorts of crazy stories about hanging out with them, like how he was there the night the ML from Hell was created at the party. I only wish I could have been so lucky.

Long time Pantera and dime fan. I own several Dean's. I hope I can add a Washburn to my collection as well. Im excited to see the new line coming out. I have a feeling zakk Wylde is involved. I can't wait.

trem-setter ... I used that also ... just locks the tremolo. makes it stay more in tune and the dives would need more strength to activate the trem...

Pinch harmonics are possible on thicker gauge strings if the tension is slightly low.

Zakk Wylde plays .13-.70 strings and he hits squeals on the low E all the time. But I am super happy that this question was asked because I’m switching to some lighter strings. .46 I think Dime liked.

I tuned my Explorer to 425hz and i dont know what it is but chords, notes, etc all sound soooo much better. Almost like everything is so in tune now as compared to 440hz. I dont think thats possible but just something about 425hz to my ears, Sounds so perfect when playing. I now keep my Explorer in 425 regardless of what i am playing.

Try 444 Hz... it is divisible by 12, which is a holy number, the same reason 432 hz is so popular as that number is a perfect multiplication of 12. Not trying to take you down a rabbit hole but Ancient Aliens has an entire episode on the number 12 which also relates to sound frequencies and music if you are interested. I think Metallica used 444 Hz tuning on some Ride the Lightning tunes as they actually sped up the guitars slightly to better match James' vocals, which by default raised the pitch.

My Korg only goes down to 436hz, and up to 445. On my guitar I found 438hz to be the sweet spot. I think it depends on a lot of things, like guitar, amp and strings. But thanks to this channel I experimented and got that much closer to what sounds perfect to my ears, Thanks Ola!

@@GeneOh You can get down to 428 Hz (1/4th or quarter-step down, like Dimebag used) if you tune exactly halfway between the notes in the 440 Hz setting. I experimented and found tuning right in the middle of E & Eb/D# 440 Hz equates to 428 Hz tuning if you try a tuner with a wider range ( I used an app for this) I've heard Pantera's CFH album was recorded in this tuning! I was using this tuning on one of my guitars for a while but switched it to 426 Hz recently to get a slightly darker sound. Cheers! \m/

FAQ: Hey Ola, have you ever done a deep dive into deathcore music? I feel like their riffage and how they've evolved from death metal into it's own sound would be something of interest to you! My recommendations: Angelmaker, Enterprise Earth and some old Chelsea Grin
