Today is an opportunity for us to expose some of the flaws in one of the latest recycled ideas in psychopharmacology using samidorphan an opioid receptor blocker to alleviate the metabolic side effects of olanzapine.

I understand this medication has a lot of negative reviews but this has been the only medication that has worked for me. Luckily I haven't really gained weight but my appetite has increased abit. Overall, I am satisfied with olanzapine due to its ability to reduce my anxiety and calm my racing thoughts etc.

It's actually a medication that despite the bad side effect profile patient often stay on the longest. It seems like people know and can feel what really works. The side effects remain troubling but so does schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. thanks for being a part of the community and this video takes nothing away from the efficacy of olanzapine it's the second best medication behind clozapine

@@ShrinksInSneakers thank you for your response. Yes I believe that clozapine is a close relative of olanzapine due to its chemical structure. I was on Abilify Maintena before that and found it much too stimulating. Keep up the great work man!

@@naphisa340 I was just pointing it out. And I stated I meant no disrespect. I love Dr. Rossi's videos and get a lot out of them. My personal view is that if we're mispronouncing the meds we're prescribing it could cause patients to think we're less knowledgeable than we actually are. I'm sure that's not the case here and maybe it's just a regional dialect. But I wanted him to know...in case he didn't.

My inpatient doctor put me on Topamax, what are your thoughts on that? I'm watching my weight carefully. I've been on 20mg of the drug olanzapine for about 3 weeks now, my outpatient psych wants to try switching the to Lymbalvi

Thanks for the information. My psychologist just put me on this drug after putting me on olanzapine alone. I gained 25 pounds in three months so she decided to try this pill with the samidorphan in it. I was really hopeing it would help me lose the extra wieght but now I don't know if I should even try it. What would you suggest that I do in this situation?

what is critical with addressing antipsychotic weight gain is starting a medication like metformin before significant weight gain has occurred. It's always more difficult to lose the weight after. I will usually start with metformin once I see that someone has gained a little weight on the medication. Ultimately the decision is between you and the doctor and you have to weigh the benefits of medication for mental health Vs the long term risks of metabolic disorders. There are many ways you could approach thins but the first step is to voice the concerns to your doctor. Hope this helps

It does not have the same receptor profile SAM has a five-fold greater affinity at MOR and much greater bioavailability when administered orally. Could you substitute it possibly, but it hasn't been researched then again it could just be a cash grab by the pharmaceutical industry

A shrink tried to give me olanazapine but i refused it im quite happy with mirtazapine been on it 15yrs or more gained weight initially but im now back to my normal weight.

Mirtazepine is ok for insomnia.I know people on olanzapine billy or bessie Bunter unbeleivable how they ballooned

Olanzapine is very effective, unfortunately it comes with a lot of side effects. Studies consistently find that people remain on this medication much longer than other medications in the class. The video is more about a plan to address a major side effect but it ultimately didn't work as well as we would hope
